Chapter 3: First Day with the Foster Family

“So, how was your first night in the new bunk beds, boys?” Mikkel asked.

Jannik looked up from his cereal. “You can hear every time Rasmus turns over.”

“Yeah, and I can hear you,” Rasmus added, sitting across from Jannik.

“Relax, boys. I’m sure you’ll get used to it. I also shared a room with Uncle John when we were kids, so I know what it’s like.”

“At least the mattress is better than the one in my old bed, Dad,” Jannik mumbled.

Mikkel changed the subject.

“Remember that Mom and I are picking up Anette and Stef while you’re at school. At first, we’ll be spending a lot of time with them. They need extra comfort after losing their mother and having lived in a children’s home. But we still love the two of you, and Ingegerd and Danielle, just as much as before, even though we won’t have quite as much time as usual.”

“I love you, too. We’ll definitely help make them feel at home,” Rasmus said.

The boys soon finished breakfast. They put on their jackets and bike helmets, grabbed their backpacks and took their lunchboxes from the fridge, called out goodbye, and ran out to their bikes to head to school.

That same evening, while Mikkel gave Stef a bath, Helene, Rasmus, Jannik, and Anette made ornaments for the Christmas tree. Ingegerd and Danielle were already asleep.

“What’s going to happen to our house and Mom’s things?” Anette asked as she wove a heart.

“It’s being sold,” Helene replied.

“What about Mom’s guitar? Can I have it?”

“Can you play it?”

“No, but I’d like to learn so I can play for Stef just like Mom did.”

“We can definitely work that out. I’ll call the estate administrator first thing tomorrow morning to set a date for us to pick it up.”

“Thanks.”

“I can help you get started. Did you know that your mom and I played in a band with two other girls when we were in high school? Your mom played guitar and I played bass.”

“You can play with me, too,” said Rasmus. “I take flute lessons and I can play a little piano, too.”
