The Dawn Rescue
(Dilly)
Dilly came awake because Brin threw something at her.
“What?”
“There’s someone tapping at the window, and it’s your signal.”
Dilly groaned and got out of bed. Again? Surely not Wick again.
She could barely see out the window, but it was Thea. Thea? What on earth was Thea doing out there?
She slipped out the front door, and found Wick there too. She hugged him, and then she hugged Thea.
“Thea, what are you doing here? And you, Wick?”
“Dilly, the prince. I don’t know what to do!”
“What about the prince?”
“My dad. He’s going to attack the castle. Soon. This morning.”
Dilly looked at Thea blankly. What?
“Yes, he is. He’s going to kill the royal family. And the prince. But he was nice. Can we do anything?”
Dilly couldn’t take that in. Things like that didn’t happen.
“It makes sense,” Wick said. “Everyone’s been awake at my house all night. Getting ready for something, and they won’t tell me what. And I was run off my feet yesterday — and today there’s nothing for me to do at all.”
And that was the thing that did it, the small wrong thing, the message-boy with no messages — and it hit Dilly all at once that this was real. Super real.
“Well,” she said. “We can’t stop it.”
