Chapter 5
The crescendo passed. Reality intruded, separating thoughts, ending the glorious shared orgasm. With Ken heavy atop her, going soft inside, Dana found herself afloat in a euphoric haze. A grumble of thunder startled her awake. Outside, the sky had been clear and blue. With a second, growling rumble, the ground bucked. Her eyes flew open. Any lingering afterglow was instantly torn away. Premonition flaring with a new wave of power, she felt chilled. The earth trembled, then growled and bucked again.
“Oh shit!” Ken blurted, pulling from her, pushing to his knees. “Another quake!”
“Stay down!” she blurted.
The cavern seemed to tilt and shiver. Dust sifted down from ceiling fissures. rock fragments plinked on metal lids of feed drums. A chunk of rock bounced off plank flooring. Stone grumbled, noise rising and falling, building to a steady, heaving roar.
Overhead, the butane lantern was swinging on the piton ring. Other sounds reached them. Trees cracked. Branches were falling, though most outside noises were muted by a thick carpet of dry needles. All around them, the basalt intrusion seemed to produce a throaty, swelling growl. They could hear water slopping and splashing in ice grottos deep below the cavern.
Oblivious to her nudity, Dana scrambled towards the entrance on all fours. Sliding down and ducking outside, she stared about in wonder. Terror gripped her insides. Blurring with undulating waves, the clearing was rising and falling, tall pines swaying in a bizarre, rhythmic dance. The late morning sky had turned black; but there were no stars.
Pushing out past her, crouching back at her side, Ken looked around, yelling, “we couldn’t run twenty feet in this!”
“Don’t run! Supposed to jam yourself ... in a door! Here! The entrance tube!” “ Dana shouted, twisting around, scrambling into the tunnel ... She pressed feet against one side, her back curled against the other. Ken Urged her in further, copying her action. He wedged himself across the entrance and wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Just beyond the circle of fire stones, dust roiled. A pale brown haze of dry pine needles already filled the air. Twigs and pine cones danced atop rolling turf. Any view of trees or distant mountains became lost in a choking gloom.
