Chapter 2
After passing the lodge, Dana spread her towel over a fence rail to dry. Even though her bikini wasn’t terribly skimpy, she almost felt naked. Gathering resolve, she tried to focus, looking out at the small, aquamarine lake, clear sky and nearby mountains, she padded quietly down a dusty track, heading back to the floating dock. Deliberately keeping her hips from an exaggerated sway, she headed for the diving board, all too aware that others were following.
‘You’re being a crazy egotist,’ she thought, admonishing herself, all the while planning to give the trailing males a little show. The dock shivered and pitched as feet clomped up the ramp behind her. After dropping her towel, Dana stepped up on the diving board. With a glance over a shoulder, she wasn’t surprised to find Melinda tagging along, all but hanging off Ken’s arm, still pressing one boob into his side. New additions to the blended family, the twin teenage boys, Bill and Bart were trailing behind. Their eyes shifted from Melinda to Dana, both staring, their eyes alternating between teen females.
Sixteen and six months older, her cousin Melinda had always been a royal pain. She caught Dana’s glance, and deliberately laid a hand on Ken’s arm, saying something in a whisper, manifestly showing possessiveness, at the same time directing sparks of hostility towards her cousin. It wasn’t difficult to see that Melinda manifestly had a crush on the young man, looking up at her new stepbrother with calf eyes made even larger by heavily applied makeup.
‘Well damn! She has the hots for him. Not fair! It’s almost incest.,. Wonder if they’ve already been making out?’
Dana forced a smile, then gave all four a little wave, took position on the board, bounced high and executed a precise jackknife, cleaving the surface with barely a ripple.
The lake was worse than chilly. She plunged through surface cold, hitting a layer of icy water. Her chest contracted. Her head felt like it was being squeezed in a vise.
‘Idiot!’ she thought, almost blinded as she clawed back to the surface.
Blowing out, sucking a breath, Dana tried to focus and still look unperturbed. Pushing clinging black hair away from her forehead, she started a slow breast stroke back to the dock. Holding onto the ladder, Ken was kneeling at the edge, frowning, swishing a hand in the lake. Fingers possessively on his shoulder, Melinda was biting her lip, narrow slitted eyes shooting daggers down at her cousin. Though still suffering from the cold, Dana allowed herself a moment of smug satisfaction. She knew her cousin wasn’t about to engage in anything that involved physical competition.
“Bloody hell!” Ken said, glancing at Dana. “This water is frigid! You into Iron Man competitions?” He backed from the ladder, shrugging off Melinda’s hand, curling legs under him to sit on the deck.
“That was an awesome dive,” one of the twins said with unfeigned appreciation. His brother nodded vigorously, echoing his words, saying, “hardly any splash!”
“A regular tomboy,” Melinda said, her sneer barely concealed. She straightened, ignoring Ken’s rebuff, tossing a long fall of auburn curls. She stepped away from Ken and began shrugging off a jogging outfit, stripping down to an outrageous, extremely daring string bikini. Settling close to Ken, she dabbled her toes in the lake and winced.
Dana knew her cousin wouldn’t dare jump in, but still had to damp down a momentary stab of envy, thinking, ‘big boobs, great figure and teeth, amazing hair, but no brains.’
In a moment of weakness, she felt sorry for her California cousin, then Bill and Bart shifted attention to Melinda’s cleavage, subverting Dana’s momentary flicker of pity.
After only a sidelong glance, Ken gave Dana an admiring grin. “You part silky, or some kind of Arctic creature?”
There was only pleasant banter in his tone and she grinned back, treading water a few metres away. “A radioactive minnow bit me. Altered my DNA.”
