Prologue
Exasperated, Dana Summer rolled her eyes. The young teen sat dangerously close to a precipitous drop, watching with barely checked patience, rolling eyes while her father kept adjusting his digital camera. Light angles were important, getting the right contrast difficult. A precocious teen, Dana kept a moody silence. Her paleo-archeologist dad was capable, but she wondered when he would finally give up, knowing she had a better eye for getting the shots he needed. She wasn’t afraid to balance on the cliff edge in order to capture a wider angle and better light.
Discovered by her father */, the petroglyphs were almost invisible, carved into a lichen encrusted, black basalt overhang. Shade from a few scraggly pines growing out of rock fissures made photography even more difficult. Nearly inaccessible, the location was curious and remote, High above and several kilometres northeast of a wilderness lodge and small mountain lake. The outthrust ledge was on the side of an extinct volcano, giving a clear view of the distant aquamarine lake and ranch that had become a tourist lodge.
