Jim was there, as well as Ron and Rick and a middle-aged black woman. She turned out to be Mary Pickens, the BTF ‘administrator’. Jim said that officially she had no authority whatsoever, but if anything ever happened here without her approval we’d all be sorry.
I introduced Nell as “Nell Jones, my designated adult. She’s here to try to keep me out of trouble. Also, she is my girlfriend’s grandmother so she can cause me an IMMENSE amount of trouble if she’s not happy, so please treat her well. We can’t stay long, I’m supposed to be in Montgomery today to get my state employee ID, but I’ve got a whole bunch of questions I need answered before Sunday. First off, where will we be training?”
“You’ve got several areas, all somewhat paved. How many are you expecting?”
“I have 76 confirmed as of this morning. I think to be safe we should plan on double that, so 150.”
“Okay, how much room do they need?”
“I think we need a minimum of 10’ in all directions, for this first session. A... 13 by 13 square would do, so figure... 150’ square”
“That is more than I expected, but we can do it.”
“Maybe it will rain and no one will show up.”
“Yeah. No, we can do it. Let’s go outside and look.”
He walked me over behind a big pavilion to an area that looked like it was about 100’ wide at least. I could only estimate that because I knew what size a football field was. It was at least three times as deep as it was wide. The only problem was that it wasn’t exactly level. There were raised railroad tracks and ramps up and over them, and other issues.
I didn’t care. For this first session, all the trainees should go to a spot and stay there. “This looks great to me. Can it be marked?”
“What do you need?”
“I think we can go with twelve-foot spacing, but we have to ensure that people know where they are supposed to be. Can you have someone come out here and paint a white ‘X’ every twelve feet in a straight line right here? Then, move back 12 feet, and do it again but offset it by six feet so the second row isn’t right behind the first? The third row should be right behind the first row, and the fourth row should be behind the second row, and so on. I can come out here tomorrow after our Dive if I have to, but if you can do it that would be great.”
“I’ll see. Can you make a drawing that shows what you want?”
“Sure. Okay, that will work. Next, where do people park? I know you don’t want 200 cars all jammed up in here.”
“That might be a problem.”
“There are some parking lots across the streets. If those businesses aren’t open on Sunday, can we get permission to park over there? That would let you block all vehicle traffic here, and we don’t have to worry about anyone running over our people.”
“Temporarily, that might work. I’d have to promise to make our own parking area, though.”
I shrugged. “You’ve got room. Do you need those railroad tracks?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Surely some scrapper will come in and take all the steel just for the scrap value. Doesn’t have to be done today, as long as we have parking somewhere on Sunday. Okay, when do you open Sunday morning?”
“Whenever you need us to.”
“Okay, I’m gonna try to be here by 8. Do y’all have a coffee pot for whoever I bring as a work crew?”
“We will.”
“Awesome! Then, if you can get some spray paint today, maybe a box of 12 cans each of white, red, and blue, we can paint those marks Sunday morning and it’ll be our fault, not yours.”
“Sam, that’s a much better plan.”
““Okay, we’ll do that. I guess that’s it for outside. I need to bring a twelve-foot measure and a six-foot measure. Oh, do you have a working forklift here? With someone who can drive it?”
“Yes to both. What do you need THEM for?”
“I don’t know yet. Move blocks to stop idiots from driving through your gate? Pick up cars that block the gate? I don’t know yet. I just know ‘better to have and not need, than to need and not have’. My Dad’s in the Navy and he’s got hundreds of stories about when things go wrong and bringing in a forklift almost always fixes it. There’s also an ‘Old West’ saying that I just made up. ‘Having the biggest gun in the fight often means there’s no fight.’”
“Sam, you’re definitely a cowboy, but yes we can have a forklift ready.”
After that we went back in looking for Nell. She said that the men were taken care of, but the only thing the women had was that one, pointing at the two office bathrooms “And you aren’t going to want a hundred women tromping in here when it’s raining and muddy.”
I looked at Mary. She was smiling and nodding her head. “Who’s gonna clean THAT mess up? I took this job to get OUT of being a janitor!”
“Okay, we need some porta-potties, then. Uh, I know nothing about that. How many we need? How much they cost? No idea. Um, Nell, could we designate the locker room for the women, and use the porta-potties for the men?”
“That would work, and it would be better. We’ll have fewer men than women and they don’t take as long anyway.”
“Just, get a way to wash their hands, too. I see that every day in school and I don’t want to touch that door after the retard opened it.”
I looked at Jim. “I have no idea what needs to be done here. All I can do is identify the problem and tell my boss.”
“We’ll get some port-o-lets in and a sink station. Do you really need a locker room for the men? I’ve seen you after two trips into Portals, and all you needed was a place to take your armor off, then you wanted a hotel room. You can use that pavilion to sit down. We’re not paying for 300 hotel rooms.”
“Right. I didn’t promise people anything except free training, so we’re good. But, we’re gonna need more bathrooms. Don’t any of the other buildings have bathrooms?”
“Yet again, I have to say ‘I’ll find out’. You’re right, with all these buildings they have to have some more bathrooms.”
Ron told us “You can get, either buy or rent, portable bathrooms. All you need is a place to put them, and then hookups for power, water, and sewage. I’ve seen them at worksites.”
Jim asked “See if we can get one for this weekend, and ask if they have holding tanks. We can run a hose and an extension cord if we have to.”
I thought that about did it. Oh! I opened Dad’s folio. My folio, now. “This is my preliminary list of who’s registered. All these people have sent me emails saying they will be here. I’ll finalize this after I get home tonight, but if I can’t make it Sunday you have this.”
Mary took that, saying ‘Thanks!’.
“Okay, here’s my file of ‘standard answers’. It’s kinda thin, but I’m just getting started, right?” Next I pulled out the stack of questions. “This is all the emails I’ve gotten with questions I couldn’t answer. Some might be simple, some might be hard, and some I think just prove that some people are idiots. Can you take them and write what I should say on them? I’ll come pick them up tonight when we get back from Montgomery.”
Nell butted in. “We could be pretty late. Is there somewhere you can leave them that we could get to?”
Jim and Mary looked at each other and Jim nodded. Mary said “Congratulations, Sam, you are the sixth person to earn the magic key that opens the front door. Let me give you my card. Call me when you get here, I can remotely turn the security system off, and then turn it on again when you say you’re out.”
Nell and I both nodded. That would make things easier. “Awesome! And, if I bring a girl here on a date, we can get in but you’ll have everything on camera. Maybe it’s not such a good idea.” I got some laughs for that.
“Alright, we gotta go to our next stop. I am starting to sell some of my trophies, and the first ones are going to UAB Hospital. Does ALPRA want to make a big media event, or do we just take some pictures for us?”
“Yes, we should have managed that better. Please take some pictures for us, we’ll put them on the ALPRA website.”
Nell and I nodded. “We can do that.”
When we got back to the truck I asked to see Nell’s phone. She had a newer version of mine so it was easy to show her how to take pictures. She practiced for a couple of minutes. She took pictures of me, the truck, me and the truck, the parking lot, the parking lot across the street, a pile of old junk.
I showed her how to view the pictures and then delete the ones she didn’t want to keep. Now, she wasn’t just my driver, my designated adult, and one of my ‘wives’. She was my photographer, too!
I got in the truck before I opened my folio again, I didn’t need the wind blowing everything away. I had printed the email-chain from the UAB doctor. I had asked for a text message ... I pulled my phone out again. There it was, behind the ones from Cindy, Mom, and Jim. “Please call XXX-XXX-XXXX when in Birmingham.”
Once Nell had her door closed and the engine running I called. “This is Doctor Subba.” It was an Indian accent, which matched the name. I hadn’t expected the female voice, though.
“This is Sam McGowan. We are in Birmingham, headed for the UAB Hospital.”
