Chapter 13

Batman the Caped Crusader stands in the warehouse, his cape billowing dramatically behind him. Standing tall, hands firmly planted on his hips in his signature heroic pose.

“Your fiendish plan to use trained passenger pigeons to transmit mind control waves throughout Gotham City is finished, Penguin!” Batman declares in his distinctively measured, earnest tone. “Citizens will no longer have to fear your dastardly scheme!”

The rotund villain waddles forward, his monocle glinting in the dim warehouse light as he clutches his umbrella. “Wak wak wak! Not so fast, you meddlesome do-gooder! You haven’t defeated the Penguin yet!” He turns to his three henchmen. “Get him, boys!”

The thugs charge forward as Batman springs into action. *POW! His perfectly aimed punch sends the first henchman spinning. ZAP! A swift uppercut connects with the second. BOOM!* The third goes flying with a classic Batman haymaker.

“Your henchmen are no match for justice, you waddling wrongdoer!” Batman exclaims, brushing off his gloves with satisfaction.

The Penguin attempts to make his escape, frantically waddling toward the warehouse exit while wielding his umbrella. “You’ll never take me alive, Batman! Wak wak wak!”

But the Caped Crusader is too quick. He pulls a Batarang from his utility belt and expertly throws it, striking the Penguin in the back of the neck. The portly villain collapses unconscious to the warehouse floor.

“Evildoers will never win, because their own misdeeds will always be their downfall!” the Caped Crusader says to his defeated opponent as he produces his trusty Bat-cuffs and secures them around the Penguin’s wrists.

“Birds of a feather flock together, you fiendish fowl!” Batman announces triumphantly, standing over the defeated villain.

Batman reaches into his utility belt and produces his Bat-phone. He dials quickly and speaks in his characteristic formal tone. “Commissioner Gordon? Batman here. I have the Penguin secured at the old Gotham Warehouse on Fifth Street. Please send a police wagon immediately to transport him to Gotham State Penitentiary.”

After ending the call and returning the Bat-phone to his belt, the Caped Crusader limps exhaustedly toward the warehouse exit.

But as our hero departs from his latest triumph over evil, little does he know that a mysterious individual has just arrived in Gotham City! Who is this well-dressed man? What is his purpose here? The answers await in our next thrilling adventure!

The dimensional portal flickered and closed behind Ultimate Bruce Wayne as he stepped onto the unfamiliar streets of this Gotham City. His black business suit remained immaculate despite the multiversal journey, and he took a moment to survey his surroundings with the keen, analytical eyes that had served him well across dimensions.

His attention was immediately drawn to the distinctive vehicle parked nearby. Well, I haven’t seen a Batmobile like this since the 1960s, Ultimate Bruce Wayne thought to himself, admiring the sleek, classic design with its prominent red accents and distinctive fins. The craftsmanship was impeccable—whoever this universe’s Batman was, he had excellent taste.

As Ultimate Bruce Wayne scanned this version of Gotham City, he spotted a familiar figure limping toward him from a nearby warehouse. The cape, the cowl, the blue and gray costume—it was unmistakably Batman, though this version moved with the careful, measured gait of someone nursing old injuries. Ultimate Bruce Wayne’s trained eye catalogued every detail: the slight favor of the left leg, the almost imperceptible stiffness in the shoulders, the way this Batman held himself with dignity despite obvious discomfort.

“Hello, Batman. Are you doing okay?” Ultimate Bruce Wayne asked as he approached with measured steps, genuine concern coloring his voice.

“I’m doing alright, citizen. Thank you for asking,” the older Batman replied in a formal tone. Still, the slight wince that followed betrayed the older hero’s discomfort.

Ultimate Bruce Wayne wasn’t fooled. “I’m not so sure about that. You’re limping pretty badly there. Let me help you.”

“Don’t worry about it, citizen. All I need to do is get to the Batcave and put some Bat-BenGay on my knee,” the older Batman said with the matter-of-fact delivery that Ultimate Bruce Wayne found both endearing and achingly familiar. Some things never change across universes, Ultimate Bruce Wayne mused.

“Yeah, you do, old timer. Here, let me help you to the Batmobile,” Ultimate Bruce Wayne said, unable to suppress a knowing smile.

The older Batman paused mid-step, studying him with renewed interest. “You look familiar.”

“Yeah, come on,” Ultimate Bruce Wayne replied simply, gesturing toward the classic Batmobile. He could see the questions forming behind that eyebrowed cowl, but explanations could wait until they were somewhere more private.

Ultimate Bruce Wayne guided the limping Batman to the iconic vehicle, opening the passenger door. After helping the older hero settle into the seat, Ultimate Bruce Wayne moved around to the driver’s side and slid behind the wheel.

The controls were familiar yet different. Before starting the engine, Ultimate Bruce Wayne turned to face his older counterpart, knowing this conversation would change everything for him.

“Well, before we go, first of all, I’m a version of you from a different universe,” Ultimate Bruce Wayne began, watching carefully for the older Batman’s reaction. “I know this might sound strange, and I know where the Batcave is—under Wayne Manor, correct?”

The older Batman was quiet for a long moment, and Ultimate Bruce Wayne could practically hear the analytical mind working behind the cowl, processing this revelation with the same methodical approach he himself would use. Finally, the older hero spoke.

“Yes, you are correct,” he said, his voice trailing off as the full implications began to sink in.

Ultimate Bruce Wayne started the engine, and they drove off into the Gotham night.

The Batcave had always been a place of wonder—no matter the universe—but to Ultimate Bruce Wayne, this version of it was like stepping back in time and into a dream. As he followed the older Batman down the steps, he took in the cavernous expanse: stalactites hung above them like gothic chandeliers, while spotlights cast dramatic shadows on stone walls and steel consoles.

Towering in the center of the cave was the legendary Batcomputer—complete with flashing lights, spinning reels, clattering punch cards, and massive panels of blinking buttons. Ultimate Bruce Wayne blinked. “How did we ever solve crimes with this thing?” he wondered with a smirk.

He turned his gaze toward the older Batman, who had settled on a leather stool and was carefully rubbing *Bat-BenGay* into his left knee. The packaging matched the decor—bright blue and yellow with an exaggerated cartoon bat. The sight would’ve made Ultimate Bruce Wayne chuckle, if not for the genuine weariness behind the cowl.

But something else caught his eye. In the shadows near the Bat-Radar stood a *mechanical suit*—sleek, metallic, and reinforced at the joints. It was gray with dark-blue plating and bore a stylized bat emblem across the chest.

“What’s up with the suit?” Ultimate Bruce Wayne asked, nodding toward the exo-frame.

The older Batman looked up mid-application. “Ah, that thing? Since I’m not quite the spring bat I used to be, chum, I’ve been developing a mechanical enhancement suit. Prototype, of course. Still working out the bugs.”

Ultimate Bruce Wayne stepped closer, studying the suit with a practiced eye. “Not bad,” he thought. “For this timeline’s tech level, it’s actually impressive.” He tapped lightly on the arm plating. “It’s got potential.”

“Whatever happened to Robin?” Ultimate Bruce Wayne asked, glancing back as Batman capped the Bat-BenGay.

“He left the nest, as they say. He needed to spread his wings.” Batman stood, stretching his shoulder with a wince. “He’s in Bludhaven now. Right next door to Gotham. Goes by Nightwing.”

“And Alfred?” Ultimate Bruce Wayne asked more softly.

Batman’s expression dimmed. “Alfred passed a few years back. He was a great man. A better friend. But time, old chum ... it waits for no man.”

Ultimate Bruce Wayne lowered his gaze respectfully. “I’m sorry.”

“Thank you,” Batman replied, adjusting his glove. “So ... ever consider becoming Batman again? This old city could use a replacement.”

Ultimate Bruce Wayne shook his head. “I appreciate the offer, but I’ve left the Bat behind. I have my own mission now.”

“A shame,” Batman said with a shrug. “You’d have made a great fill-in. One Batman to another.”

Ultimate Bruce Wayne paused, a thought forming. “What if ... we didn’t stop at me?” he said. “I could put out a Batman Wanted ad across the multiverse.”
