Chapter 5: The Manifold

The failed coolant manifold looked simple until Daniel tried to touch it.

“Do not touch that surface,” Neris said.

His hand stopped a centimetre above the dark metal. “Hot?”

“Chemically active.”

Daniel withdrew his fingers. “That’s worse.”

The manifold sat behind an access panel near Takuhai’s aft compartment, where the hull narrowed around systems never meant to be serviced by anyone with human shoulders. During the dimensional accident, pressure had forced coolant through a microscopic fracture. Takuhai had isolated the line before the leak reached the phase lattice, but the loss left the ship operating on restricted power. Conventional communications could not be tested at full load. The environmental reserve remained safe, though no longer comfortable. ER had begun turning lights off in rooms before anyone entered them.

Neris had designed a replacement insert from materials Daniel could obtain without raising questions: copper pipe, ceramic insulation, a section of stainless-steel tubing, a check valve from a retired hay-baler hydraulic system, and a shielding sleeve printed from Takuhai’s remaining fabrication feedstock.

None of the pieces belonged together.

Together, they might survive.

“This is temporary,” Neris reminded him.

“Most farm repairs are temporary until they last twenty years.”

“That is not reassuring.”

“It wasn’t meant to be.”

The first problem appeared before they installed anything.

The stainless tube Daniel had brought was eleven hundredths of a millimetre wider than the dimension Neris had specified. On a baler, the difference would have disappeared inside a gasket. In Takuhai, it prevented the printed sleeve from seating.

Neris measured it three times.

“Your instrument is inconsistent,” she said.

Daniel took the micrometer from her. “My instrument says the tube is too big.”

“The supplier’s tolerance should have been narrower.”

“The supplier assumed nobody was repairing a dimensional courier ship.”

Neris’s ears angled outward. “A lack of foresight.”

They carried the tube back to Daniel’s workshop. Neris had been inside it only once before. That day she noticed more: the smell of cutting oil and old cedar; a rack of hydraulic hoses; welding masks hung beside cattle halters; shelves containing baler bearings, water-line fittings, tractor filters, and coffee tins filled with bolts whose original labels had long disappeared. A whiteboard listed cattle numbers that needed vaccinations, hay moisture readings, and parts Daniel meant to order before freeze-up.

His life had no clean separation between mechanical, biological, and domestic work. Everything waited in the same room to be kept functioning.

Daniel mounted the tube in the lathe.

“You can remove the excess evenly?” Neris asked.

“If you stop asking while I’m doing it.”

“Questions improve reliability.”

“Not while the cutting tool is moving.”

The sentence came sharper than he intended.

Neris went still. Her ears lowered by a degree.

Daniel switched off the lathe. The sudden quiet exposed the wind against the workshop wall.

“Sorry,” he said. “I need to listen to the cut.”

She looked at the machine, then at his face. “I did not know.”

“You couldn’t.”

The answer did not erase the moment, but it gave them somewhere to put it.

Neris moved to the far side of the bench and watched without speaking. Daniel took off the thinnest possible ribbon of metal, measured, and repeated. When the tube finally met her tolerance, she examined the surface under magnification.

“Acceptable,” she said.

Daniel leaned against the lathe. “High praise.”

“It is nearly round.”

“And there it goes.”

Back aboard Takuhai, ER extended one of the ceiling maintenance manipulators to hold the sensor cluster above the open panel. The arm’s left joint still carried a slight hesitation from the crash, pausing before every correction as though remembering pain.

“Your manipulator is drifting,” Neris said.

“By point zero three millimetres. I have compensated.”

Daniel looked up. “You have arms?”

Takuhai has integrated maintenance manipulators. I operate them.”

“Can they come outside?”

“No. They are components of the ship.”

Daniel nodded. “Probably for the best.”

“The basis of that conclusion is unclear.”

“You haven’t seen my workshop when you can reach it.”

“I have observed it through Neris’s communicator.”

Daniel stared at the ceiling arm.

“You asked permission to connect the camera,” Neris said.

“I know. I’m reconsidering how generous I was.”

The repair space forced Daniel onto his side beneath the line while Neris knelt over the open panel with the sensor wand. ER held the upper assembly. Neris supported the printed sleeve with one paw and guided Daniel’s hand with the other.

Her tail had nowhere sensible to go.

She curled it along the wall. The tip knocked a clamp into the access cavity.

ER retrieved it with a manipulator.

She threaded the tail behind her ankles. It brushed the chemical warning plate.

Finally it settled across Daniel’s back, heavy enough that he felt the warmth through his coat.

Neris tried to move it. Her elbow struck the sensor wand against the housing.

“Leave it,” Daniel said.

“It is touching you.”

“I’ve survived worse.”

“That statement is too broad to be useful.”

“I’m not in danger from your tail.”

Her ears warmed beneath the fur. Mephit tails were expressive, private, and difficult to discipline. Deliberate contact signified trust. Accidental contact could reveal more than speech. She had not yet determined which category this belonged to.

“ER,” she said, “do not record this.”

“Your instruction conflicts with maintenance logging requirements.”

“The manifold, not my tail.”

“Clarification accepted.”

Daniel’s shoulders shook with restrained laughter beneath the weight of the tail.

“You are encouraging him,” Neris said.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“That has not prevented you.”

The first pressure test failed before it reached half load.

A bright thread of coolant appeared around the lower seal and spread in a perfect circle. Neris shut the line. ER’s manipulator dropped an absorbent shield into place before the fluid touched Daniel’s sleeve.

Daniel pushed himself out. “Bad seal?”

“Bad geometry.”

“That’s a diplomatic answer.”

“I am attempting diplomacy.”

They dismantled the insert. The ceramic liner had shifted while the sleeve seated, leaving one side under-compressed. Daniel proposed a compression collar.

Neris objected that the local alloy would deform under cycling.

He showed her how a tapered collar could settle gradually around the imperfect surface rather than force it all at once.

“You are compensating for poor precision with material behaviour,” she said.

“That’s one definition of repair.”

“It is also a definition of accepting preventable error.”

Daniel looked at her. “We don’t have your factory. We have my baler parts, one lathe, and whatever Takuhai can print before you run out of feedstock.”

Her ears went back.

“I am aware of our limitations.”
