Chapter 33: Lift

Transit authorization did not mean Takuhai could fly. Daniel realized that at breakfast. The realization arrived somewhere between Claire pouring coffee and Neris reading the latest corridor packet for the third time. He put down his fork. “Has the ship actually moved?”

Neris looked up. Claire stopped pouring. ER said nothing. Daniel looked toward the kitchen speaker. “That silence feels important.”

Neris’s ears tilted back. “Takuhai has moved.”

“When?”

“During recovery operations.”

“On the ground.”

The departure plan had reached an embarrassing omission in Daniel’s mind: Takuhai had not flown under its own atmospheric power since the crash. Transit authorization covered the route and the legal framework, not whether a damaged courier vessel could actually leave the clearing.

Claire’s expression made the absurdity visible before anyone said it aloud. ER clarified that flight certification had always been part of final departure preparation; it had simply not been the problem in front of them until now.

Daniel closed his eyes. “And we’ve somehow reached ‘transit authorization approved’ without checking whether you can get off the lawn.”

ER objected to calling the clearing a lawn. Neris’s tail moved beneath the table as she admitted that she had known atmospheric propulsion still required testing.

“And?”

“We were addressing the corridor requirements first.”

“Because?”

“They were more uncertain.”

Daniel looked toward the window. Beyond it, Takuhai remained hidden in the trees. A ship that had crossed dimensions. A ship they had spent weeks repairing. A ship that had not flown since it crashed. Claire picked up her coffee. “I’m going to say something annoying.”

Daniel looked at her. “You’ve established a pattern.”

“You’ve all been treating the corridor as the dangerous part because it’s alien.” Claire continued. “But the ordinary part is still a damaged aircraft sitting in a forest.”

ER said, “That is reductive.”

“Is it wrong?”

A pause. “No.”

Daniel leaned forward. “What has actually been tested?”

ER projected a status summary onto the kitchen tablet.

Most lines showed green. Several showed amber. “Green means tested?”, asked Daniel.

“Green means subsystem diagnostics fall within operational tolerance.”

“That is not what I asked.”

Neris rested one paw on the table. “Daniel.”

“Have the engines run under load?”

ER answered. “Not at flight output.”

“Attitude control?”

“Static response only.”

“Navigation?”

“Ground reference calibration.”

“Emergency descent?”

“Simulation.” Daniel sat back. Claire said, “That’s a no.”

Neris’s ears lowered. Daniel looked at her. She looked tired rather than defensive. “We were planning to test it.”

“When?”

“Today.”

He stopped. Claire looked at Neris.

“You already scheduled it?”

“Yes.”

Daniel looked toward the speaker. “Did everyone know except me?”

ER said, “You were medically unfit to participate in previous preparation.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“No.”

Daniel laughed once. His ribs objected mildly. He pressed a hand to them. Neris immediately asked about his pain level.

“Two.”

“Three.”

“Two and a half.”

Claire looked between them. “I’m beginning to understand this household.”

Daniel ignored her. “What’s the test?”

Neris looked toward the window. “First, full propulsion diagnostics. Then atmospheric lift at minimal altitude.”

“How minimal?”

“One metre.”

Daniel stared. “That’s not flying.”

ER said, “It is flight.”

“It’s hovering.”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling. “You are going to ruin this, aren’t you?”

“Probably.”

Neris’s muzzle shifted. Daniel caught it. “So, one metre.”

“If stable.”

“And after?”

Neris became more serious. “Rotation, lateral translation, descent, power shutdown and full inspection.”

“Then?”

“If everything remains within tolerance, a second test tonight.”

Claire looked up. “Why at night?”

“Reduced visual exposure,” ER said. “Lower local road activity. Easier detection of approaching vehicles. Air-traffic density is also lower in the proposed window.”

Daniel looked at the countdown.

3 DAYS, 17 HOURS

“When were you planning to tell me?”

Neris met his eyes. “After breakfast.”

Daniel pushed his plate away. “Breakfast is over.”

Claire looked at his unfinished eggs. “It absolutely is not.”

He stood anyway. The Earthside monitor vibrated amber before he had fully straightened. Neris folded her arms. Daniel sat back down. “Breakfast is ongoing.”

“Good,” Claire said.


The full diagnostic began at nine. Daniel reached Takuhai by utility sled, which he hated less than he had two days earlier without coming close to liking it. Claire walked beside him while Neris drove. The morning was bright enough to make every patch of snow look sharp-edged, with no new snowfall, low wind and good visibility. ER had selected the conditions deliberately. Daniel understood why, but he still wished for darkness. Something about watching the ship try to fly in full daylight made the risk feel exposed.

They reached the clearing. Takuhai sat where he had sat for nearly two months. The ship no longer looked exactly crashed; too much had been repaired. Hull panels had been resealed. Damaged exterior sections had been removed or replaced. Earth-made supports no longer looked improvised because Daniel had seen them often enough to become part of the design. The ship had acquired the odd visual logic of something built in two places at once.

Daniel climbed from the sled. Neris stood beside him. He looked at the ship.

“You ready?”

She did not answer immediately. That concerned him more than if she had said no. Her ears angled toward him. “I have flown this ship thousands of times. I have landed in storms. Docked without guidance. Crossed debris fields.”

Daniel waited. Neris looked at Takuhai. “I have never flown him after rebuilding part of him with a Canadian feed store.”

Daniel smiled. “Confidence inspiring.”

ER said through Daniel’s monitor, “Several components originated elsewhere.”

“That’s your defence?”

“I object to inaccurate sourcing.”

Neris’s tail moved once behind her. Daniel took her paw. The tension in her fingers surprised him. “You don’t have to pretend this is routine.”

“I am not.” She looked at him. Daniel squeezed her paw, then glanced toward Takuhai. “You know, historically, ships were usually referred to as ‘she.’ Linguistic habit, maritime tradition, all that legacy.” ER answered immediately. “I am the ship.” Daniel waited. “I also identify as male.” Daniel looked toward the hull.

“Centuries of nautical tradition lose to one opinionated courier AI.”

“Correct.”

Neris’s muzzle shifted. Daniel nodded gravely. “Fair enough.”

ER added, “I appreciate your respect for personal identity, Daniel.”

“That sounded smug.”

“It was intended to.”

Neris’s tail flicked. Daniel looked at her, then back at the ship. “Then let’s find out if you fly.”

“That wording is acceptable.”

Claire came up behind them carrying the tablet. “I hate that I’m nervous for a spaceship.”

ER answered. “That is a reasonable emotional response.”

Claire stopped. “Did you just validate a feeling?”

Neris’s muzzle softened. The hatch opened. The first diagnostic was boring. Power rose in stages from five to twelve, twenty and thirty-five percent. Takuhai’s internal hum changed gradually without explosion, warning light or dramatic shudder. Neris sat in the pilot position. Daniel remained strapped into the auxiliary observer seat behind her under protest. Claire stood outside the ship at a designated observation point, recording hull movement and ground effects. Daniel had argued that he could stand outside. Neris said no. ER said no. Claire said no. Marcel, informed of the test only as “equipment movement in the woods,” had said no before Daniel finished asking. Daniel had accepted the seat.

ER displayed propulsion field stability.

LIFT FIELD: NOMINAL

PRIMARY THRUST: NOMINAL

ATTITUDE CONTROL: NOMINAL — STATIC

POWER RESERVE: 63%

Daniel looked at the last number. “That seems low.”

“It is lower than pre-impact capacity,” ER said.

“How low?”

“Original departure reserve target would have been eighty-four percent.”

“Do we have enough?”

“For the current test, yes.”

“For departure?”

“Projected yes, with twelve percent contingency after corridor-entry allocation.”

Daniel looked toward Neris. She was reading the same figures. Her paws rested on the controls. “Enough,” she said—not comfortably, but enough. ER raised lift output. A different vibration entered the deck. Low. Steady. Daniel felt it through the seat before he saw anything change.

Snow beneath the ship shifted under pressure rather than wind. The powder flattened in expanding arcs around the hull. Claire’s voice came through the comm. “Movement.”

Daniel looked toward the side display. The landing supports had lightened against the snow. Neris’s fingers adjusted something. The hull rose. A centimetre. Two. Five. Daniel stopped breathing. The ground separated from the landing feet. The gap widened. Ten centimetres. Twenty.

The ship kept rising. Nothing dramatic happened. That was the miracle. The trees remained where they were. The snow remained white. The ship simply stopped belonging to the ground.

Daniel looked at Neris. Her eyes were fixed forward. Her ears stood high. Her tail had curled tightly around the base of the pilot seat. ER said, “Altitude fifty centimetres.” “Seventy.” The vibration deepened but soon steadied. “One metre.”

ER held the display.

ALTITUDE: 1.00 M

Daniel felt something older than the nanites shift inside his chest: hope with evidence. “You’re flying.”

Neris’s mouth moved slightly. “Yes.”

ER said, “Technically, we are hovering.”

Daniel looked toward the ceiling. “Don’t ruin it.”

“I was clarifying.”

Claire’s voice came over the comm. “Please continue not crashing while you argue.”

Neris laughed. The sound loosened her paws, making them more familiar without becoming careless. She rotated Takuhai five degrees clockwise and back, then tested lateral translation half a metre in each direction before moving forward and back. Daniel watched the clearing shift around them. Every motion was small enough to seem absurd; the implications were not.

ER said, “Preparing descent.”

Neris lowered them slowly until the landing feet touched snow and the ship settled. The vibration faded as power reduced. Daniel remained sitting. No one spoke for several seconds before Claire’s voice came through. “You landed.”

Neris looked down at the controls. “Yes.”

Daniel watched her. She put one paw over her eyes. He unfastened his harness. “Hey.”

Neris lowered her paw. Her eyes were wet. Daniel reached forward. She turned in the seat. He held out his hand. Neris took it. “You flew,” he said. Her ears lowered. “Yes.”

This time ER did not correct him. The inspection found nothing catastrophic: hull stress remained below threshold, the landing supports were stable, primary lift was balanced, power draw was slightly higher than predicted but still acceptable, and one exterior patch showed minor thermal expansion. Daniel inspected it from the ground while Neris monitored his walking range. Claire documented everything.

ER ran internal comparisons. They reached attitude control. One line had changed from green to amber.

Daniel saw it first.

STARBOARD AFT ATTITUDE NODE: OUTPUT VARIANCE 6.8%

Neris crouched beside the exterior access panel. “Static testing did not show that.”

ER replied, “Dynamic response revealed intermittent field instability.”

Daniel leaned against the support frame. “What does it do?”

“Fine orientation adjustment in yaw and lateral correction.”

“Can you fly without it?”

“Yes,” Neris said.

ER said, “With degraded manoeuvring precision.”

Neris looked toward the hull. “For corridor alignment?”

ER paused. Daniel hated pauses now. “Within tolerance if variance remains below nine percent.”

“That is too close,” Neris said.

“Yes.”

Daniel crouched. Pain tugged through his pelvis. Neris immediately looked at him. “I’m crouching.”

“You are not permitted prolonged crouching.”

“I’m looking.”

He leaned closer to the open panel. The component inside looked nothing like a thruster. Instead of a nozzle or obvious moving parts, a compact set of layered rings surrounded a dark central housing.

One support bracket had discoloured. Daniel pointed. “That hot?”

“Previously,” ER said. “Not currently.”

Neris scanned it. “Field coupling is unstable under lateral load.”

Daniel looked at her. “English.”

“The node produces a directional force by interacting with the main propulsion field.”

“Better.”

“The coupling shifts when the hull flexes.”

Daniel looked at the bracket. “Because the mount moves.”

“Yes.”

“Can we stiffen it?”

Neris shook her head. “Too much stiffness could transfer load into the node itself.” Claire joined them. “Same problem as the resonator brace.”

Daniel looked at her. She pointed toward the mount. “You don’t need it rigid. You need it predictable.”

Neris looked back at the scan. Claire continued. “What if it’s allowed to move, but only in one direction?”

ER said, “A guided compliant mount.”

Daniel nodded. “Rubber bushing.”

Neris looked at him. “Not rubber.”

“Equivalent.”

“Yes.”

They had no Xianglume replacement mount. The fabrication system could produce only simple components. Daniel suggested layered tractor isolation material around a machined pin. Neris objected to the temperature tolerance. Claire suggested using the remaining composite offcuts from the resonator cradle as guides with the flexible material only at the bearing surface.

ER modelled it. Output variance predicted: Two-point-four percent.

Daniel smiled. “Ugly.”

Neris looked at the projection. “Functional.”

“See? You’re learning.”

“This does not authorize aesthetic decline.”

They built it before lunch and ran one dynamic bench-load test, which returned a variance of two-point-one percent. Neris stared at the result. Daniel looked at her.

“That’s it?”

“That is it.”

“No second redesign?”

“No.”

“No catastrophic surprise?”

“No.”

“Suspicious.”

ER said, “Successful first solutions occur at nonzero frequency.”
