Chapter 24: The Answer That Wasn’t a Voice

By morning, the message had been received by no one.

Or everyone.

Or a machine that had not yet decided what to do with it.

The distinction could not be measured from Moose River.

The status above Takuhai’s central console remained unchanged.

SENT — RECEPTION UNKNOWN

Neris sat beneath it with a cup of coffee cooling between her paws.

Daniel had brought breakfast from the farmhouse. Eggs, toast, and the last of the roast beef folded into something he claimed was an omelette and Neris had classified as structurally unstable.

She had eaten half.

The rest remained untouched beside the console.

Daniel sat next to her, close enough that their legs pressed together from hip to knee. Her tail lay across his lap and continued around his waist, its weight familiar now.

He kept one hand resting in the fur.

ER worked around them.

Not visibly.

The resonator remained dark except for the faint reserve glow beneath the isolation layer. The damaged active section had cooled overnight. Every few minutes, ER shifted the dimensional receivers to a new analysis pattern and searched the noise for structure.

Nothing qualified.

A narrow fluctuation appeared on the display.

Neris leaned forward.

ER dismissed it.

“Local phase relaxation.”

Another rose thirty seconds later.

“Transmission residue.”

A third followed.

Neris’s ears lifted.

“Background gravitational interference.”

Daniel ate another piece of toast.

“How many ways can the universe say nothing?”

“Potentially infinite,” ER replied.

“That’s encouraging.”

“It was not intended to be.”

Neris’s attention remained on the signal trace.

“How long should an acknowledgment require?”

“Under standard courier-network conditions, less than one second.”

Daniel looked at the dark resonator.

“And under these conditions?”

“Unknown.”

Neris’s claws tightened slightly around the mug.

ER continued.

“The proof-of-life packet entered the reconstructed Veyra layer, but we cannot determine where within that network it emerged. It may have reached an automated relay, a dormant routing node, or an active station. The dimensional path may also have introduced temporal displacement.”

“How much displacement?” Daniel asked.

“Milliseconds. Hours. Potentially longer.”

“Days?”

“Yes.”

“Weeks?”

“Possible.”

Neris looked toward the speaker.

“Years?”

ER paused.

“Less likely.”

“That was not the question.”

“No.”

The answer settled heavily.

Daniel did not offer reassurance.

He moved his hand slowly through her tail until the tension in the fur eased beneath his fingers.

Neris lifted the coffee and drank.

It had gone cold.

She drank it anyway.

ER changed the display again.

“No structured return detected.”

Daniel looked toward the untouched half of her breakfast.

“You done with that?”

“I am not hungry.”

“That wasn’t what I asked.”

She pushed the plate toward him.

Daniel finished it.

Neris watched the signal.

After several minutes, ER said, “A maintenance issue requires attention.”

Daniel looked up.

“Resonator?”

“No.”

Neris turned from the display for the first time since breakfast arrived.

“Location?”

“Environmental sensor cluster six.”

She stood.

Her tail slid from Daniel’s lap but remained around his wrist until the final length passed through his hand.

“What failed?”

“Pressure differential monitoring in the port-side thermal transfer duct.”

“Critical?”

“No. Redundant sensors remain operational.”

“Can you reset it?”

“I have.”

“And?”

“The sensor output remains intermittent.”

Neris looked toward the internal schematic.

“Replace it.”

“I cannot.”

The words were simple.

They changed the room.

Daniel watched Neris’s ears lower.

The sensor cluster lay beyond the precision fabrication array’s former internal reach. Before the extraction, ER could have manufactured the necessary replacement assembly, sent a maintenance unit through the internal conduit, and corrected the failure without involving either of them.

Now the path ended in darkness.

Neris opened the service map.

“Existing access?”

“Manual passage through environmental corridor three.”

“Can I reach it?”

“Yes.”

Daniel put down his plate.

“What does the replacement need?”

“A pressure sensor capable of detecting low-level differential flow. Precision requirements exceed the current fabrication array’s output.”

“Earth equivalent?”

“Possibly.”

Daniel thought of the farm workshop.

“Furnace pressure switch?”

Neris looked at him.

“Explain.”

“Measures whether air is moving properly through a system.”

“Resolution?”

“Probably terrible by your standards.”

ER said, “Potentially sufficient if recalibrated through software.”

Daniel stood.

“There’s one in the old grain-dryer parts box.”

Neris looked back toward the signal status.

It had not changed.

Daniel saw the calculation she was making.

Stay beside the resonator in case something happened.

Repair the sensor because ER could no longer repair himself.

ER said, “I will notify you immediately if a structured response occurs.”

“I know.”

“You are evaluating whether to remain here.”

Neris’s ears angled back.

“I know what I am doing.”

“Yes.”

Daniel waited.

Neris looked once more at the status.

SENT — RECEPTION UNKNOWN

Then she closed the display.

“Show us the access route.”

The furnace pressure switch had been manufactured in Ohio fifteen years earlier and spent at least nine of those years beneath a box labelled MISC. ELECTRICAL, where Daniel’s filing system had preserved it through neglect.

Neris held the component beneath the workshop light.

It was a small circular housing with two pressure ports and a pair of spade terminals.

“This is mechanical.”

“Mostly.”

“The sensing diaphragm is polymer.”

“Probably.”

“The output is binary.”

“It tells you if the pressure’s above or below a point.”

“We require continuous measurement.”

Daniel opened a drawer and removed a small agricultural vacuum sensor.

“Then use this.”

Neris stared at the second component.

“You possessed a more appropriate device.”

“I forgot about it.”

“You found both within four minutes.”

“Organized chaos.”

“Disorganized storage.”

“Same result.”

ER spoke through the tablet on Daniel’s bench.

“The vacuum sensor’s response range overlaps the required differential.”

Neris connected the test leads.

The sensor produced a fluctuating voltage when Daniel applied gentle air pressure through a length of tubing.

“Noise is excessive,” she said.

“Can you filter it?”

“Yes.”

Daniel leaned against the bench.

“So it works.”

“It may work.”

Neris fabricated a rough mounting plate aboard Takuhai using the reduced fabrication array.

The plate emerged with visible layer lines and one hole slightly oval rather than perfectly circular.

Neris ran a claw along the edge.

“This would previously have been rejected.”

Daniel took it from her.

“Does the sensor fit?”

She inserted the mounting screws.

It fit.

“Then the previous standards were spoiled.”

“My standards were appropriate to the technology.”

“Now they’re appropriate to what we’ve got.”

ER said, “Daniel’s philosophy continues to spread.”

“You say that like mould,” Daniel replied.

“I have not excluded the comparison.”

The environmental corridor required Neris to crawl beneath the port-side thermal exchanger. Daniel could reach the outer access point and no farther.

She entered carrying the modified sensor and a cable harness made from a section of farm equipment wiring.

Her shoulder no longer required a full support wrap, but Daniel had insisted on a lighter brace before she climbed inside.

She had allowed him to fasten it.

Neither had argued.

ER guided her through the internal turns.

Daniel watched through the inspection camera.

“Sensor cluster ahead,” ER said.

“I see it.”

Neris removed the failed unit.

The old sensor came free without resistance.

The Earth replacement seated into the rough plate.

She tightened the two fasteners, connected the pressure lines, and attached the electrical harness.

“Installed.”

ER activated the circuit.

A new signal appeared on the tablet.

It wandered above and below the expected reading.

Daniel frowned.

“Bad sensor?”

“No,” ER said. “Output variation is consistent with measurement noise.”

Neris remained inside the corridor.

“Can you correct it?”

“Yes.”

The raw signal smoothed.

A second line appeared, calculated from the first.

“Pressure differential estimate stable,” ER said.

“Accuracy?” Neris asked.

“Within three point six percent.”

She considered.

“Acceptable.”

Daniel smiled.

“There’s that word.”

The ventilation system increased speed.

The new sensor responded.

ER adjusted the software model again.

“Functional.”

Neris began backing out.

Daniel offered his hand at the access opening.

She took it and let him pull the last part of her through.

Her body came against his as she stood.

Daniel’s hand settled at her waist.

Her good paw remained in his.

ER said, “The replacement does not meet original specification.”

Daniel looked toward the speaker.

“It works.”

“Yes.”

“You could say thank you.”

“I require additional long-term data before determining reliability.”

Neris’s tail curled around Daniel’s leg.

He waited.

ER continued.

“I also require your help to install it again if it fails.”

Daniel’s expression softened.

“Yeah.”

A pause.

“Thank you.”

Daniel did not make a joke.

Neris placed one paw against the ship’s wall.

The sensor trace continued smoothly.

One more internal function remained available because all three of them had participated.

The status above the resonator still read:

SENT — RECEPTION UNKNOWN

Nothing had changed.

Everything had.

The cattle had not developed patience during the transmission.

By late morning, they expressed this through collective noise and one particularly committed percussionist.

Clang.

Mabel struck the solid gate panel.

ER counted from Takuhai through the yard microphone.

“One.”

Daniel stopped halfway into his coat.

“You’re starting over?”

“The previous sequence ended when yard monitoring was suspended during sensor recalibration.”

“There doesn’t need to be a sequence.”

Clang.

“Two.”

Neris fastened her jacket.

“It appears there is.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You’re both encouraging her.”

Mabel struck the panel again.

Clang.

ER said, “Three.”

The day had warmed enough for the upper snow layer to soften.

Daniel cleared the service lane while Neris checked the cattle waterers and feed-yard gates. Her shoulder allowed nearly full movement, though he noticed she still favoured the injured side when lifting.

He did not mention it every time.

When she climbed down from the tractor, his hands settled at her waist and helped lower her over the last step.

Her tail swept around his hips as her boots reached the snow.

They stayed close for a moment.

Then Neris turned toward the feed system.

The main auger ran from the storage bin to the mixing hopper inside the feed shed. During ordinary operation, it moved grain supplement through an enclosed steel tube using a rotating internal screw.

Daniel opened the inspection hatch above the drive housing.

Frozen condensation had formed around the upper edge. Several clumps of feed had hardened near the inlet during the power interruptions.

Neris looked inside.

“Obstruction?”

“Partial.”

“Can the system operate?”

“Probably.”

“That is not a recommendation.”

“No.”

Daniel shut down the auger at the control panel, locked the disconnect, and tested the emergency stop before opening the lower clean-out cover.

Neris watched each step.

“You have isolated power.”

“Yes.”

“The drive cannot engage remotely?”

“Not unless somebody removes the lock.”

“ER?”

“I cannot operate unconnected farm controls,” ER said through Daniel’s communicator.

Daniel glanced at the small physical padlock through the disconnect handle.

“And even if he could, that’s why this exists.”

He removed the frozen material with a wooden scraper rather than a metal bar.

The compacted feed came free in several heavy pieces.

Neris inspected the auger flight visible through the opening.

“The metal shows surface wear.”

“Normal.”

“The inner edge is polished.”

“Also normal.”

“What would indicate failure?”

“Cracks around the shaft weld. Bent flighting. Bearing movement. Heat damage.”

She examined each area.

“None visible.”

Daniel checked the drive bearing by hand.

No looseness.

The guards were intact.

The emergency stop functioned.

The system looked safe.

He closed the clean-out cover, removed the lock, and restarted the auger.

Feed moved normally.

No vibration.

No unusual noise.

Nothing either of them could reasonably identify as dangerous.

Daniel watched it for a full cycle before moving away.

“Good?”

Neris asked.

“Good.”

The auger continued turning behind its steel housing.

Deep inside the tube, beyond the inspection opening, an old weld carried a line too fine to see.

The day continued.

At two in the afternoon, Claire sent three possible travel dates.

Daniel found the message while standing in the tractor shed with Neris beside him.

December 8, 9, or 10. Roads permitting. I have not booked anything. Admire my restraint.

Daniel showed her.

Neris read it twice.

“She intends to come.”

“Looks that way.”

“The earliest date is seven days from now.”

“Yes.”

“What will you tell her?”

Daniel put the phone back in his pocket.

“Before she gets here?”

“Preferably.”

He looked across the yard.

The farmhouse stood exposed beneath the pale winter sky. Takuhai remained invisible beyond the trees.

Claire would notice things.

The workshop activity.

The cables.

The second set of tracks.

Neris.

There was no plausible way for her to stay at the farm and remain hidden from someone living in the house.

“We could ask her not to come,” he said.

Neris watched him.

“You do not want that.”

“No.”

“Then it is not a solution.”

Daniel leaned against the tractor.

“I could tell her you’re not from Canada.”

“That is accurate.”

“She’ll ask where you’re from.”

“I could answer far away.”

“She’ll ask why you’re hiding.”

“That question is more difficult.”

“Claire likes difficult questions.”

“So do I.”

“Yeah. That’s what worries me.”

Neris stepped closer.

Her paw rested against his chest.

“Do you trust her?”

“Yes.”

“Does that mean she should know?”

Daniel looked down at her paw.

“Not automatically.”

“No.”

“She didn’t choose this.”

“Neither did you.”

“That didn’t stop it becoming my responsibility.”

Neris’s gaze moved toward the trees.

“The transmission may have informed an interstellar network of Earth’s existence.”

Daniel nodded.

“That feels bigger than telling my sister.”

“It is not necessarily simpler.”

“What happens if someone answers?”

Neris withdrew her paw and folded her arms.

The question had occupied her since the message left.

“Xianglume maintains protocols for first contact with technologically younger civilizations.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You’ve done this before?”

“Not personally.”

“Your people have.”

“Yes.”

“How often?”

“Infrequently. Most inhabited worlds detected by Xianglume’s networks were already technologically visible across interstellar distances. A civilization without faster-than-light communication or dimensional engineering is more likely to be found through long-range observation.”

“And then?”

“Observation first.”

“For how long?”

“Sometimes decades.”

Daniel stared.

“You watch them for decades before saying hello?”

“Contact can alter a society even when no technology is transferred.”

“That sounds like a polite way to say you’re afraid of damaging them.”

“We are.”

Neris said it without defensiveness.

Daniel waited.

She continued.
