Chapter 22: Proof of Life

The first part Takuhai made after losing the precision lattice looked ugly.

Daniel held it between two fingers beneath the workshop light.

It was a simple access clip no larger than his thumbnail, printed from a dark structural composite. The shape was correct. The dimensions were correct enough. One edge carried a faint ridge where the fabrication head had laid material less cleanly than before.

Neris examined it.

“It will fit.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

“It is the relevant question.”

Daniel turned the clip sideways.

“ER?”

“The component exceeds minimum tolerance by zero point three millimetres along the inner flange.”

“Meaning?”

“It will fit.”

Neris’s ears shifted with restrained satisfaction.

Daniel looked toward the speaker.

“You two rehearsed that?”

“No.”

He pressed the clip into the resonator housing.

It seated on the first try.

The retaining tab caught.

The access panel held.

Daniel pushed it twice to make sure.

“Works.”

“Yes,” ER said.

The word came without pride.

Without apology.

The fabrication array remained diminished, but not useless.

That mattered more than the ridge.

Daniel left the clip in place.

Neris stood beside the open resonator assembly with her injured arm supported across her body. She had refused a sling on the grounds that it interfered with work. Daniel had compromised by wrapping the shoulder and upper arm under ER’s direction.

The wrap had taken less time than the argument.

He had removed her outer coat first, easing it over the injured side while she stood very straight and pretended not to notice his hands in her fur.

Now he checked the support again.

His palm rested against the outside of her shoulder.

“Too tight?”

“No.”

“Any numbness?”

“No.”

“Pain?”

“Reduced.”

“That means yes.”

“It means reduced.”

Daniel pressed two fingers lightly near the front of the joint.

Neris inhaled.

He stopped.

“There.”

“It is manageable.”

“You don’t have to prove the arm still belongs to you.”

Her ears tilted back.

“That is not what I am doing.”

“You’re trying to win an argument with your own shoulder.”

“My shoulder has not presented an argument.”

“It’s refusing to lift.”

“That is a mechanical limitation.”

Daniel looked at her.

Neris looked back.

Her tail curled around his ankle.

“I will limit overhead movement,” she said.

“And heavy load.”

“Yes.”

“And crawling into anything.”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Daniel relaxed his hand.

“Good.”

Neris leaned into the contact before he could withdraw it.

Only slightly.

Enough that his palm settled more fully against her shoulder and the side of his thumb brushed the fur at the base of her neck.

Daniel remained there.

No emergency required it.

No one commented.

ER displayed the resonator model.

The borrowed optical lattice rested inside a temporary mount above the damaged coupling chamber. Its fractures appeared as thin amber lines across the blue surface.

“The current support transfers excessive vibration into the lower-right quadrant,” he said.

Neris stepped closer to the console.

“How excessive?”

“Within passive observation tolerance. Above acceptable transmission tolerance.”

Daniel looked at the lattice.

“What happens if we send anyway?”

“Fracture propagation is probable.”

“How probable?”

“Sixty-eight percent during the initial power rise.”

Neris’s tail released Daniel’s ankle.

“The mount is structurally stable.”

“Excessively stable,” ER said.

She frowned.

“That is not a conventional failure.”

“No.”

Daniel touched the edge of the temporary frame.

The lattice was clamped rigidly at four points. Any movement in the resonator housing would travel directly into the cracked material.

He thought of the drawer.

Not the repaired joint.

The runners.

Wood expanding through winter and summer. A rigid cabinet built without space for movement would split itself apart.

“You’re holding it too tightly,” he said.

Neris looked at him.

“The lattice cannot move during phase alignment.”

“Does it need to stay completely still, or does it need to return to the same position?”

“That distinction may not be meaningful.”

“It is if the housing moves.”

ER answered before Neris could.

“Explain.”

Daniel pointed to the clamps.

“If the mount is rigid, every vibration gets pushed into the lattice. Cracked things need somewhere for the strain to go.”

Neris folded her good arm across her body.

“This is not a cabinet.”

“No.”

“Or a drawer.”

“No.”

“Or wood.”

“No.”

Daniel waited.

Her ears angled outward.

He continued.

“But if the housing shifts by half a millimetre and the lattice can’t, something has to take it.”

“The clamps,” she said.

“Until they don’t.”

ER adjusted the model.

A second simulation appeared. The four rigid clamps changed to a suspended cradle held by tensioned supports.

“Controlled compliance may reduce peak stress,” he said.

Neris studied it.

“Phase stability?”

“Potentially recoverable through active calibration.”

Daniel smiled.

“Cabinet.”

“Not a cabinet,” Neris said.

“Cracked things still need somewhere for the strain to go.”

Her tail moved once.

Not disagreement.

Thinking.

They built the new cradle from two materials.

The inner supports came from Takuhai’s remaining flexible composite, cut into narrow bands capable of holding tension without transmitting sharp vibration. The outer frame came from thin Earth aluminium Daniel shaped in his workshop and finished by hand until each edge sat flat against the resonator housing.

The first frame fitted.

It also resonated at nearly the same frequency as the damaged coupling chamber.

ER detected the problem during a low-power test and shut the system down before the lattice experienced measurable stress.

Daniel removed the frame.

“Wrong stiffness.”

Neris examined the vibration trace.

“Too uniform.”

“You want irregular?”

“I want the support resonance separated from the housing.”

Daniel thought about chair rungs, cabinet backs and the thin cross-braces his father used to stop shelves from humming against the wall.

He cut two of the aluminium supports shorter and replaced the lower pair with laminated strips of maple.

Neris stared at the wood.

“No.”

“You haven’t tested it.”

“Wood is dimensionally unstable.”

“In the farmhouse, yes. In a controlled ship environment, less so.”

“It is hygroscopic.”

“So are half the things on the farm.”

“The resonator is not a farm.”

ER said, “The maple strips possess a lower elastic modulus than the aluminium supports.”

Neris looked toward the speaker.

“Do not encourage him.”

“I am stating a property.”

Daniel fitted the maple strips into the outer frame.

He had sealed them with the same finish he used for drawer runners and tool handles, leaving enough flexibility that the wood could absorb small movement without cracking.

The new support looked absurd beside the dimensional machinery.

It also moved correctly.

The low-power test passed.

The second test increased amplitude.

The lattice flexed within the cradle by less than a quarter millimetre and returned to alignment.

No fracture propagation.

Neris watched the stress model settle into green.

Daniel folded his arms.

“Cabinet.”

She looked at him.

“Temporarily acceptable optical support.”

“Catchy.”

ER said, “Daniel’s design reduced peak lattice stress by thirty-seven percent.”

Neris’s ears shifted.

“That is significant.”

“Thank you.”

“I was speaking to ER.”

“Still taking it.”

The remaining installation took most of the day.

They divided the lattice electrically into an active section and a protected reserve. The active portion would carry the first transmission. The reserve remained disconnected behind a sacrificial isolation layer, available only if the first section failed before completing the burst.

Neris wanted to allocate more surface to the active side.

ER refused.

“Transmission probability rises only four percent. Reserve survival decreases by twenty-one.”

“The first attempt must succeed.”

“The second possibility must continue to exist.”

Neris looked toward the lattice.

Daniel rested one hand at her waist.

Not to redirect her.

To remind her she was not making the decision alone.

She let her weight lean against him.

“Keep the reserve,” she said.

ER adjusted the configuration.

Later, a small alignment bracket failed to seat because the replacement fabrication clip had left the resonator cover slightly proud of its original position.

ER instructed Daniel to file the bracket.

Daniel waited.

“What?”

“The bracket requires manual adjustment.”

“I heard that.”

“Then why have you not begun?”

“You can say you need help.”

“The instruction already communicated that.”

“Not the same.”

Neris looked between them.

ER remained silent.

Daniel picked up the file but did not move.

The silence lengthened.

Finally, ER said, “I need your help.”

Daniel filed the bracket.

He did not smile.

He did not make the admission larger than ER wanted it to be.

The bracket seated after a single careful adjustment.

“Done,” Daniel said.

“Thank you.”

The words were quiet.

Daniel placed the file back in the tray.

By evening, the resonator held phase alignment across the full Veyra interval simulation.
