Rhythmically dipping paddle blades, Beth headed her stolen kayak in closer to shore. The tide was starting to run against her and she cursed herself for not taking that into consideration while planning her escape.

Despite the slap of waves, a distant, murmuring throb on the breeze gave her pause. Dimly, at the threshold of awareness, the sound caught her attention. Gradually swelling, a rumbling clarified, echoing down the long inlet.

Identifying the beat of twin Diesels at full throttle, Beth dug in paddles. Alarmed, the fugitive leaned into each stroke, turning the kayak, darting behind a small islet, angling between rocky projections, turning right below a sheer limestone promontory.

Despite their genetic enhancement, increased strain had her arm muscles complaining. Desperate to escape, Beth searched ahead for a place to hide.

Abruptly, early morning sunlight lanced through a break in thick overcast. A golden beam passed her, illuminating a slanting fracture where two limestone faces seemed to overlap. despair riding her, Beth turned in between sheer limestone cliffs, leaning into each stroke of the paddles. Beth hoped that the vertical fault might be overlooked by searchers. Ahead, dark shadows offered the hope of concealment.

Sounds were telling. Beth knew the big launch was approaching fast. fear caught at the young woman’s throat. She turned into the cleft, then Shadows altered like an optical illusion. Beth thought she saw another opening at water level but shadows closed in and the fissure vanished. With no options left, Beth poured herself into the effort, racing for the spot, hoping for a gap wide enough to conceal her stolen kayak.

Darkness closed in about her. A low morning overcast thickened. Clouds heavy with moisture swept across the sun, then rain began hissing across the salt chuck. When Beth thought the kayak was going to slam into jagged rocks, the yawning mouth of a cavern opened on her left.

The tug and swirl of a rising tide caught the kayak, spinning it into blackness.

Plastic scraped along rock as Beth deftly fended the prow away from barnacles and muscles on projecting rocks. A few strokes bit water, then blades were clattering against slimy rocks and seaweed. She flipped the paddle shaft parallel to the narrow vessel, polling with one blade, pushing the kayak into a narrow gap. Clumps of mussels scraped the composite hull. The prow caught on something but the kayak bucked, carried on by surging tidal currents. Jarred, Beth glanced back. The stern and a mound of camping gear wrapped in plastic were still in plain view. Ahead, the passage made a slow bend to the right. Beth clipped her paddle to the hull and reached out, grasping pitted limestone. Fingers slipped on algae as she pushed off rock. The bow swung clear, then was caught by racing current, sweeping her along, deeper into dank, stygian blackness. Within moments, she was completely out of sight.

The rumble of Launch Diesels quieted as they were throttled back. A masculine shout echoed off cliff walls. Beth felt certain she had been spotted.

As though riding a rushing torrent of white water, the kayak seemed to accelerate, scraping rock and barnacles, nose bumping from one cave wall to another. Imagination provoked a new fear. She reached up and gasped. Not far above, fingers touched a ceiling coated with fronds of seaweed and barnacles.

“If this doesn’t open up, pretty soon I’ll be in deep shit,” Beth muttered, realizing her predicament. “I can still climb out and swim. Even drowning is better than getting captured.”

She wasn’t going to return. The government biogenic facility was not going to have her. She wasn’t going to be taken back. Death was better than suffering the continuing indignity of experimentation, egg harvesting and sexual abuse.

The noise of twin Diesels seemed even closer, then cut to little more than an idle, their burbling exhausts resonating between limestone cliffs. Beth heard muffled shouts, then one splash was followed by a second. She gasped, certain the launch had dropped swimmers. For certain they would be wearing SCUBA gear and carrying underwater floodlights.

Dampness pressed in, chill air pressing into her face. The fugitive reached out but no longer found purchase on pitted limestone. The kayak seemed to pitch down even more, a rush of wind whistling in her ears. Adrenalin surged. Unable to see anything, her panic rising, Beth ducked low, wondering if her head would get split open by a stalactite.

An odd rippling sensation enveloped the young woman. Static shocks passed through her body. The echoing burble of idling Diesel engines cut off abruptly. The bottom seemed to drop out of her world. Beth squealed, clutching sides of the fragile kayak, a penetrating chill knifing through her core.

‘A waterfall?’ she thought, plunging down and down and spinning crazily. ‘Whirlpool?’

The drop ended with an electric jolt. Beth’s loud shriek echoed back. Insides gripped by nausea, she was completely disoriented.

“Not a Taser,” she gasped aloud, shuddering, quickly taking stock of her circumstances. “Some kind of underground river dumping into an abyss?”

?However improbable, the kayak remained afloat, bobbing on still water. Senses slowly returning to normal, Beth listened. She desperately sucked down air and swallowed bile. Not only was she alive, the kayak seemed undamaged. Even better, she was unharmed.

No longer blowing past her, cool, damp air brushed her cheeks. Slowly, as she gulped down breaths, her pulse slowed, her body quieting. She blinked repeatedly but The blackness was complete. Faint, reflected sounds made surroundings seem vast, yet, at the same time, very oppressive.

There was no longer any engine noise from the launch. There were no shouts. There wasn’t a ripple of water, or floodlights from searching divers. There wasn’t even movement or the surging current of incoming tide. The surface about her was flat and calm, yet Beth felt vulnerable. Without a place to hide, a diver’s spotlight would pick her out in the blackness. She unclipped the twin paddle, carefully digging in blades, propelling the kayak forward. All about her, sounds altered. She lifted the paddles vertically and swung them around, unable to touch ceiling or walls. Relieved, she dipped rhythmically, moving the kayak further into an eerie blackness.

Each splash of a paddle echoed back from her left and right. Bioengineered, enhanced hearing allowed her to hold a middle course. After a few minutes, she was able to relax, then thought about digging a flashlight out of her pilfered camping supplies.

As Beth twisted around to get at her pack, a shimmer of light appeared on her right. Too irregular and soft for the beam of a spotlight, the glow drew her. She turned towards it, mindful of the nine millimetre pistol sealed in a baggie and tucked in a pocket of her jacket. She unzipped the pocket and unsealed the bag. Tension building, Beth dipped blades, heading towards the light.

Ordinary daylight softened and took on definition, the blue of sky clarifying. Wide and tall, the wedge of a large cave mouth showed green slopes beyond.
