Chapter 10: Grand Theft Pickup
JULIE
The next couple of weeks after the picnic were pretty slow-moving, from my perspective. Both Adela and Dad seemed tentative, fretting about issues I thought were unimportant.
Dad worried that his peers in the ESL class were beginning to notice his “teacher’s pet” situation, as if he would receive preferential treatment.
“But, Giulia, sometimes I slip, and I’ll be affectionate in my tone, and one time I used ‘tú’ when I should have said ‘usted’ and I heard a couple of giggles. I know we are part of gossip.”
“Dad, you’re telling me you should use usted instead, or is it u-s-t-e-a-d? I think I’m going to write a song with that rhyming lyric: use usted instead!”
“I swear, I really am going to ask David to spank you. And if you sing that song around Adela she’ll use a paddle.”
Meanwhile, there were other “developments.” My dear David was becoming far too intense. I could see his feelings running past his ability to control them as he watched me with his puppy dog eyes and made more and more intense declarations of love.
But I didn’t have the same feelings as he did, and finally I had a long and intense session of heart-to-heart discussion.
“You have to know, David, I am ridiculously fond of you. I feel so much affection and I’m overwhelmingly attracted. Everything about you, your mind, your personality, and your, uh, physique—I think you’re amazing.”
“I hear a ’but’ coming, Julie, and it’s going to break my heart.”
“I’m afraid you’re right. You’re amazing, but I’m not ready. I’m not ready for an exclusive romantic relationship. I feel you’re seeing us on a one-way road to getting engaged. I have to be honest with you.”
