Chapter 15: Burning the Boats
The bodyguards looked at each other, confused, but not daring to disobey their employer’s command, they all bent down to unlace their boots, took off their socks, and placed them on the rear of the Ferrari.
In the scorching heat, the sour stench of muscular men’s feet swathed in thick boots all day was simply indescribable.
Even in the open air with a breeze, the foul smell of the eight stinky socks still burrowed into nostrils, making people want to keep their distance.
“Your chance is gone. Your brothers are destined to climb higher and farther than you, and you will soon no longer be qualified to call them brothers.”
Marcus said to the profligate, still maintaining a serious expression.
“Unless you stuff these few pairs of socks into your mouth and apologize to me.”
Everyone was dumbfounded, thinking the idea utterly ridiculous while simultaneously admiring the audacity of it in their minds.
The swindler’s brain is just too clever. How come I never thought of such a unique method of messing with someone? It’s simply ... ugh. Disgusting.
The profligate’s face turned shades of red and white, then he cursed, “You motherf—”
Marcus flicked his wrist, and a stinky sock from the back of the Ferrari flew into the profligate’s mouth.
“Ptooey, ptooey, ptooey ... ugh ... Dammit! You wait, I ... ugh...”
The profligate covered his mouth and ran toward a corner, while everyone around stepped aside as if he reeked unbearably.
Serena laughed heartlessly, clearly indicating his relationship with the profligate wasn’t very close.
Suddenly his laughter stopped and he looked disgustedly at the entrance of the parking lot, spitting. “Damn it, an even more nauseating bastard has arrived.”
Everyone turned their heads and saw a black Rolls-Royce Ghost slowly driving into the parking lot. Among a sea of supercars and performance vehicles, it might not have been the most expensive, but it definitely had the strongest presence.
The Ghost came to a halt in front of the Ferrari. The rear window rolled down, and Blake Calloway was seen with his arm around a woman who looked like a young wife. He first gave Marcus a gloomy glance, then smiled and asked, “Serena Blake, how much money do you plan to gift the young master tonight?”
Serena’s face instantly darkened.
As the two richest heirs of Westlake’s business dynasties, they had always been at odds, and they nearly always bet against each other every time they met on Serpent Ridge.
But for some reason, whether it was Serena’s bad luck or something else, he would lose seven or eight times out of ten.
So far, he had already lost five or six million to Blake Calloway.
Looking at Marcus, who stood next to him with a calm expression, Serena clenched his teeth and sneered, “Cut the crap. I’m here to turn the tables today, and I won’t write my surname backward unless you lose everything but your underwear.”
Blake laughed heartily. “Seems you’re quite confident. Fine, let’s play big tonight.
Your car is nice, and I have my eyes on it. Let’s bet our cars against each other.
If you win, my Ghost, the woman by my side, and even my clothes are all yours.
If you lose, well, the young master won’t be too hard on you. Just give me the keys to your Ferrari and drink a cup of my woman’s ‘Holy Water.’ Do you dare?
Oh, right, I should clarify this first so you don’t look for excuses to weasel out later.
Last night, the young master just made the acquaintance of a retired professional racer—the kind who’s won national championships. He’ll be participating in the race tonight too.
If you chicken out, bow down to me now and say ‘Mr. Calloway, I was wrong,’ I can assume your earlier bravado was just hot air and let you off this time.”
Serena felt a twinge of fear and couldn’t help but hesitate.
He wasn’t stupid. He understood all too well the vast gap between a professional racer and an amateur. Losing money was one thing—just a Ferrari—but to drink that so-called ‘Holy Water,’ he truly wouldn’t be able to show his face in Westlake territory ever again.
“Have you heard that your father is thinking of making you marry into the Shaw family?”
Marcus suddenly spoke up, his words striking Serena like lightning, buzzing in his ears. His fists clenched and his eyes slowly reddened.
He also had an older brother who was more educated, more capable, and had never even been involved in any scandalous behaviors of a profligate son. His brother had always been the apple of their father’s eye and the prime candidate for succession.
Although Serena was self-aware and had decided to give up on vying for anything, as a man, he couldn’t help but want to prove himself.
Elena Shaw was beautiful, and if he were to marry her, he would feel it was to his gain—but to marry into her family as a son-in-law was more than any man could bear.
He wanted to tell his father that just because his brother was excellent, it didn’t mean he was only fit to be treated as disposable trash.
He wanted to let everyone know that even without relying on his family, he, Serena Blake, could still stand tall and proud.
Suddenly Marcus’s previous words echoed in his mind again.
This is your closest chance to break free from your father’s shadow and perhaps even surpass him.
Success won’t fall from the sky, and if you don’t even have the courage to burn your bridges, what right do you have to dream of standing tall and proud?
“Fine! I’ll take the damn bet!”
Serena exclaimed loudly, sending a shiver through the spines of the other profligates.
