Chapter 84: The Closing Net

The marketplace seems louder than usual. Not with the normal sounds of vendors promoting their wares, and carts rattling over stones, but with something sharper. Something tense. Something wrong.

Isabel feels it the moment she steps into the square with her basket. People move quickly, eyes lowered, voices hushed. The air smells of dust and fear.

I whisper to her. ‘Be careful. Something is wrong.’

Isabel tightens her grip on the basket and keeps walking. She is here to buy flour and olives for Remedios. A simple errand. A normal errand. But nothing is normal any more. Not with French soldiers on every street corner. Not with Marchand watching her at the house. Not with Javier’s message to be delivered to Tomás tucked inside her apron.

Isabel approaches the olive stall. The vendor ... a thin woman with tired eyes ... hands her a small sack of olives.

“Quickly,” the woman murmurs. “Before they...”

A shout cuts through the square.

“Soldats! En avant!”

French soldiers flood into the marketplace from all sides, muskets raised, boots pounding. People scatter. Vendors grab their goods. Children scream. A cart overturns, spilling oranges across the stones.

I feel Isabel’s pulse spike. ‘Move. Now.’

She turns, but a soldier blocks her path. Another shouts orders. A third grabs a nearby man by the collar and drags him toward the fountain.

“Look for resistance sympathizers!” a soldier barks. “Search everyone!”

Isabel’s breath trembles. If they search her ... if they find the message ... if Marchand sees her...

I whisper sharply. ‘Left. Between the stalls.’

She instinctively obeys my directions, slipping between a pottery stall and a stack of crates. She moves quickly, keeping her head down, her shawl tight around her shoulders.

But a soldier turns toward her.

“Hé! Toi!”

Isabel’s heart nearly stops. The soldier steps closer.

I whisper urgently. ‘Hide.’

She ducks behind the crates, pressing herself against the wall. The soldier’s boots scrape the stones as he approaches. Isabel holds her breath.

The soldier reaches the crates.

A hand grabs her wrist. She gasps ... And she’s pulled into a narrow alley.

The soldier turns, confused, scanning the crates. But Isabel is no longer there. My nudge on his mind delayed his search long enough for Isabel to escape.

Isabel stumbles into the shadows, her breath shaking. Here rescuer, Tomás, stands before her.

His chest rises and falls quickly. His hair is wind‑tousled. His eyes burn with urgency.

“Are you hurt?” he whispers.

Isabel shakes her head, unable to speak.

Tomás takes her shoulders gently. “You shouldn’t be here. The French are raiding every market in Jaén.”

Isabel swallows. “I didn’t know. I had supplies to collect and this message to deliver to you. I had to come.”

“I saw you,” he says softly, taking the message from Isabel. “I came as fast as I could.”

Her breath trembles. I feel her heart flutter from fear and relief, and something much deeper.

Tomás peeks around the corner. Soldiers drag two men toward the fountain. A woman cries out. A child clings to her skirt. The square is chaos.

Tomás turns back to Isabel. “We need to move. Follow me.”

He leads her through the alley, keeping close to the walls. They slip behind shuttered shops, past a broken cart, through a narrow passage that smells of smoke and damp stone.

Isabel’s breath steadies as they move.

Tomás glances at her. “You’re shaking.”

“I was afraid.”

He gives a small, gentle smile. “Fear means you understand the danger.”

She nods, remembering my exact same words.

They reach a quiet side street. The noise of the raid fades behind them.

Tomás stops. “You’re safe now.”

Isabel exhales slowly. “Thank you.”

He hesitates, then speaks softly. “I’m glad I found you.”

Her cheeks warm.

I whisper gently. ‘He cares for you.’

She lowers her gaze as Tomás steps closer, his voice low. “Be careful, Isabel. The French are hunting anyone they suspect. And Marchand...” He shakes his head. “He’s worse than the others.”

Isabel nods, her breath trembling. “I know.”

Tomás touches her arm lightly. “If you ever need help ... find me.”

She meets his eyes. “I will.”

He smiles ... warm, gentle, and hopeful.

Then he slips away into the shadows, disappearing down the alley. Isabel stands alone for a moment, her heart still racing, her breath still trembling.

I whisper softly. ‘You survived. And you were not alone.’

She touches her sleeve, steadying herself. Then she turns toward Casa de los Altamira and begins the walk home.
