Chapter 83: Under Suspicion
The night air behind the Altamira stables is cool and heavy with the scent of hay and olive wood. Isabel moves carefully, her shawl pulled tight, her footsteps soft on the packed earth. She came here to fetch firewood, but she pauses when she hears voices ... low, urgent, and intimate.
She steps closer, staying in the shadows.
I whisper. ‘Careful. Listen first.’
She nods, pressing herself against the stable wall.
Two figures stand in the dim light of a lantern hung from a beam.
Adella. And a man.
He is tall, broad‑shouldered, dressed in worn travelling clothes. His hair is dark, cropped short. His posture is alert, ready, but his eyes ... when he looks at Adella ... soften with unmistakable warmth.
This must be Javier. Isabel recognizes him from the resistance whispers she hears from her meetings with Tomás. Javier is a resistance leader. A strategist. A man the French fear but cannot find.
Adella stands close to him, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. She is nineteen and yet she looks older ... older in resolve, older in sorrow, older in courage.
Javier touches her arm gently. “We shouldn’t meet here. It’s too dangerous.”
Adella’s voice is quiet but firm. “I had to. Mateo is watching me. The officers are watching me. I needed to see you.”
Javier’s expression tightens. “If they discover you...”
“They won’t.” Her voice wavers only slightly. “I’m careful.”
Javier steps closer, lowering his forehead to hers. “Careful isn’t enough any more.”
Isabel’s breath catches. I feel her heart tremble ... not with fear, but with recognition. This is love. A dangerous, fragile, and impossible love.
Adella whispers, “I can’t stop. I won’t stop. Spain needs us.”
Javier exhales, his voice thick with emotion. “Spain needs you alive.”
Adella closes her eyes. “Your presence is what makes me alive.”
He pulls her into an embrace ... gentle, protective, and yet desperate. She clings to him, with her breath trembling.
Isabel watches, her heart aching with the intimacy of it.
I whisper softly. ‘This is why she fights. For her love of a man, and love of her country.’
Isabel nods silently.
Javier releases Adella slowly. “I have news. The French are increasing the garrison in Jaén. They suspect resistance activity near the castle.”
Adella’s eyes widen. “Burgalimar?”
“Yes.”
She swallows. “Then we must move faster.”
Javier hesitates. “Adella ... I don’t want you spying on the French officers any more.”
Adella stiffens. “Why?”
“Because it’s too dangerous. Because Marchand is watching you. Because Mateo is unpredictable. Because...”
He stops, struggling.
Adella steps closer. “Because you care for me.”
Javier’s voice breaks. “Yes.”
Adella touches his cheek. “Then trust me. I know this house better than anyone. And I have help.”
Javier frowns. “Help?”
Adella glances toward the shadows ... toward Isabel. Isabel freezes. But Adella doesn’t reveal her.
She simply says, “Someone loyal. Someone brave.”
Javier studies her, then nods slowly. “If you trust them ... then I trust them.”
Adella smiles faintly. “Good.”
He reaches into his coat and pulls out a small folded paper. “This message needs delivering. It must reach Tomás tomorrow night. He’ll deliver it to the guerrillaros near Burgalimar.”
Isabel’s breath catches.
Tomás.
Adella takes the paper. “I’ll send it.”
Javier hesitates, then pulls her into another embrace ... longer, deeper, filled with fear and longing.
“I love you,” he whispers.
Adella’s breath trembles. “I love you too.”
Isabel’s heart aches.
I whisper gently. ‘Now you understand her courage.’
Isabel nods, tears gathering in her eyes.
Javier slips away into the night, disappearing between the olive trees. Adella watches him go, her shoulders trembling. Then she turns toward the house ... toward where Isabel is watching.
For a moment, neither speaks.
Then Adella exhales softly. “You saw.”
Isabel nods, her voice barely audible. “I won’t tell anyone.”
Adella steps closer, her expression softening. “I know.”
She places the folded message into Isabel’s hands.
“Can you deliver this?” she asks quietly. “Tomorrow ... to Tomás.”
Isabel swallows. “Yes.”
Adella touches her arm gently. “Thank you.”
Isabel nods, clutching the message.
Adella’s voice lowers. “Be careful. For both our sakes.”
Isabel nods again. Adella slips back toward the house, her posture composed, her heart still trembling.
Isabel stands alone behind the stables, the message warm in her hand, the bracelet warm against her wrist.
