Chapter 73: Crossing the Border

Spain, 1795

The moment Nicole crosses the border, I feel it. It isn’t a physical sensation ... no tug on the bracelet, no shift in the metal ... but a sense of something older and deeper, as though woven into the air itself. Spain feels different to me. The light is warmer, the wind carries dust instead of smoke, and the land hums with memories I haven’t touched in centuries.

Nicole pauses at the crest of the pass, her breath trembling as she looks down at the valley below. Olive groves stretch across the hills like dark green brush-strokes. The sky seems wide and bright, too open to sustain the fear she has carried for so long.

“Jeannia ... it’s beautiful.”

I whisper back. ‘Yes.’

She closes her eyes, letting the sun warm her face. For the first time since Louise’s death, her shoulders loosen. Her grief doesn’t vanish ... it never will ... but it settles, becoming something she can carry without breaking.

Nicole descends the path slowly, treading carefully on the loose stones. Her satchel bumps against her hip. Her cloak flutters behind her. She looks like any other traveller now ... tired, dusty, and anonymous. No one would guess she once stood in the shadow of the guillotine.

When she reaches the bottom of the pass, she stops again. A small milestone stands at the side of the road, carved with a date and a royal crest. She touches it lightly, as though confirming the world is real.

She smiles ... a small and fragile one, but real nonetheless.

A cart approaches on the road, pulled by a mule with a frayed harness. The driver nods at her, uninterested. Nicole steps aside, letting the dust settle around her. She watches the cart disappear into the valley, then begins walking again, following the road south.

The land changes as she moves south away from the mountains. The air grows warmer. The scent of rosemary drifts from the hills. The sound of distant church bells echo faintly. Spain feels ancient in a way France never did ... older than kingdoms, older than borders, older even than the bracelet that binds me.

I feel something else too. A pull. Faint, like a memory half‑remembered. The pull is southwards. Toward Andalusia. Toward stone walls I once knew. Toward a castle near where I once lived, and died, and somehow linger still.

Nicole doesn’t sense it yet. She walks with a steady purpose, her steps sure, her mind focused on finding shelter, work, and safety. She doesn’t look back at France. She doesn’t speak of Paris. She doesn’t ask for magic to aid her.

She simply walks. And I travel with her. Not guiding. Not protecting. Just ... accompanying.

The land feels strangely peaceful. It feels like the beginning of something I cannot yet name. The road curves toward a cluster of whitewashed houses in the distance. Nicole lifts her chin, adjusts her satchel, and continues forward.

France is behind us. Spain is ahead. And the past that I assumed had been buried three centuries ago is beginning to stir.

Nicole reaches the first Spanish town by late afternoon ... a cluster of stone houses, a small inn, a market square where merchants call out in rapid Spanish she can barely follow. Nicole lingers at the edge of the square, watching people move with an ease that she envies. She could stay here. She could find work. She could disappear. Perhaps.

I whisper. ‘Do you want to stop here?’

She shakes her head. “No. Not yet.”

Something inside her resists the idea of stopping so soon. The town feels too close to France, too close to everything she has fled. The air still carries the faint chill of the mountains. The people glance at her with curiosity, not suspicion, but she feels the weight of their eyes all the same.

She walks on, leaving the town behind. The road curves downward, then rises again, leading toward warmer hills and wider skies. She passes two more villages ... each one small, safe, and ordinary ... but she doesn’t stop there either. She keeps moving south, drawn by something she cannot name. I suspect the bracelet is nudging her mind, but it is subtle and I cannot be sure.

Nicole rests beneath an olive tree, watching the sunset bleed gold across the horizon. The land below her stretches toward distant Andalusia ... the old road winds between groves and whitewashed towns.

She whispers, “I think I need to go farther.”

‘Yes. I feel a pull onwards too.’

“South?”

‘Yes.’

She exhales, relieved to hear her own instinct echoed. “Jaén,” she says softly, tasting the name. “I’ll go to Jaén.”

She rises, adjusts her satchel, and begins walking again ... away from the mountains, away from the border towns, away from the life she left behind. Toward the place where her new life will begin. Toward the land where my past still lingers in stone and shadow.
