Chapter 48: The Dangers of Freedom

Saint‑Pierre, Martinique, November 1678

The afternoon sun hangs heavy over Saint‑Pierre, turning the streets bright and sharp. Awa stands in the rear courtyard, sorting dried hibiscus petals into small paper packets. The air smells of citrus peel and warm stone. Chantal’s irritated, voice carries from inside the house.

Awa looks around her and decides she is safe from interruption. She rests her hand lightly over the illusionary cuff. “I wish for help.” The bracelet warms and I step into the courtyard in my now familiar solid form.

“Buenos días,” I say softly.

Awa hands me a small parcel wrapped in waxed cloth. “Deliver this to Madame Roux. Then return quickly.”

It’s a familiar, almost regular task. I nod. “I will.”

I slip through the gate and into the street, moving with quiet confidence. The task is menial, but I welcome my moments of quasi-freedom. Awa watches me go. I sense through my link to the bracelet that a mixture of hope and fear settle in her chest.

I walk down the narrow street, the parcel tucked under my arm. The market is busy. The vendors are calling out today’s prices, and the scent of roasting fish drifts through the air. I blend into the crowd, my presence nudged into normalcy by the bracelet’s subtle magic.

But today, something is amiss. A guard steps into my path. He is broad‑shouldered and his uniform is stained from the dust and heat. His eyes narrow as he looks me up and down.

“You,” he says. “Where are you going?”

My breath catches. “To deliver a parcel, Monsieur.”

“Who do you work for?”

“Madame Duverger,” I reply softly.

The guard frowns. “I know all her casual workers and slaves. I’ve not seen you before.”

My pulse quickens, and I feel the world tighten around me. The crowd thins around us as the guard’s suspicion sharpens. I try to step around him, but he blocks my path.

“Show me your papers.”

I freeze. I don’t have any papers. I’m not registered in any town record. I don’t really exist.

The guard reaches for my arm and my instincts flare. A soft pulse of magic ripples outward; subtle, emotional, instinctive. The guard’s grip loosens. His eyes lose focus, he steps back as if I’m suddenly unimportant, uninteresting, and not worth his trouble. He mutters something under his breath and steps aside.

I move quickly, my breath shaking and my heart pounding. I deliver the parcel to Madame Roux with trembling hands, then hurry back to the Duverger household. Awa hears the gate creak and looks up. I pass through the shop and into the rear courtyard, pale and shaken.

Awa follows immediately. “What happened?”

“A guard stopped me. He asked for papers. He grabbed my arm.”

Awa’s breath catches. “Did he hurt you?”

“No,” I whisper. “I used the magic the bracelet gave me to protect myself. I didn’t mean to. It just happened.”

Awa feels the bracelet pulse beneath the illusionary cuff, as though confirming my words. However, the bracelet reacts to my fear, its magic flaring in response.

“I was afraid I would be imprisoned. I didn’t want to leave you. I just wanted to come back.”

Awa touches my arm gently. “You did what you had to do.”

My voice breaks. “I was afraid.”

Awa pulls me into a quiet embrace. The bracelet pulses again, responding to Awa’s fear and my distress.

Then the bracelet tightens ... not physically, but magically ... its presence pressing against Awa’s skin, its will rising like a tide. It tries to restrain my corporeal form. It tries to pull me back into its confines. It tries to protect both Awa and me by limiting my freedom. My body gives a brief shimmer of instability.

Awa gasps. “No.”

She grips my hands, grounding her. “Stay. I want you to stay.”

The bracelet resists her desire, protective and possessive of me, almost afraid.

Awa’s voice sharpens. “She is mine to call. Not yours to control.”

The bracelet pulses again. We both sense that it is conflicted. A wish to keep me in corporeal form indefinitely is one of several prohibited wishes that the bracelet will refuse. However emotions are running high, and Awa is better placed to comfort me than the sterile care of the Maristela Bracelet.

Awa closes her eyes, focusing her will. “Let her stay.”

The bracelet’s magic softens. My shimmering form steadies. The bracelet submits to Awa’s will. Awa exhales, trembling.
