Chapter 34: A Developing Bond

Montréal, November 1672

The weather shifts. The hint of an early winter comes with crisp mornings and the smell of drying leaves. The fort feels calmer now, as though the worst of Sophie’s chaos has finally ebbed.

Marie moves through the settlement quietly, almost invisibly, carrying baskets, delivering herbs, helping Anne with mending, using her writing skills to assist the chaplain with his records. She is not a girl who demands attention. She is a girl who fills the spaces others leave empty.

And she wears the bracelet more often. Not constantly but with intention. When she slips it onto her wrist, the gold warms instantly, recognizing her touch. The magic gently stirs like a creature waking from sleep.

I appear beside her more often now. Not because she summons me to perform a task, but because she thinks of me. More and more the bracelet awakens my ethereal form in response to the wearer’s thoughts rather than a touch on the stones. Marie’s thoughts are careful, and her wishes are small. Her heart is steady.

One morning, Marie walks through the yard carrying a bundle of firewood. A soldier who once helped her limps past, wincing with each step. His boot is worn through at the heel.

Marie pauses and touches the bracelet lightly.

“I wish,” she whispers, “that he finds a better pair of boots.”

The bracelet warms and its magic moves.

Later that afternoon, the quartermaster discovers an unclaimed pair of sturdy boots in a shipment from Québec. A pair exactly the soldier’s size. He hands them over with a shrug, unaware of the wish that nudged fate into place. Marie smiles when she sees the soldier walking more comfortably.

I float like mist beside her and she whispers, “Thank you.”

I shake my head. “You did that.”

She blushes.

Another day, Anne struggles with a heavy crate of dried herbs. Marie touches the bracelet.

“I wish she has someone strong to help her.”

Moments later, a passing merchant stops, offering to carry the crate into the house. Anne laughs, surprised and grateful. Marie watches from the doorway, her expression soft. She is learning how to help. Not by commands or through manipulation. But to nudge and guide. Her wishes are precise, gentle and harmless. The bracelet responds in kind.

At night, Marie sits on her bedroll, the candle flickering low, and I appear beside her. She no longer startles, and she greets me with a small smile.

“Is this how Agnès used the bracelet’s magic?” she asks.

“In part,” I say. “She used it to help others. To travel safely. To mediate disputes.”

Marie nods thoughtfully. “I like helping. It feels ... right.”

Her hazel eyes soften, reflecting the candlelight.

“But I also feel something else,” she admits. “Something pulling me. Something I want.”

I tilt my head. “France?”

She nods, breath trembling. “Seeing Sophie makes me want to go there. I was only four years old when we left, so I don’t really remember it. But I like the idea of returning there.”

Her voice cracks.

“I’ve been happy here, but I’ve always regarded France as my home and I want to go home one day.”

I sit beside her, my form shimmering faintly.

“When you are ready,” I say, “you may wish for it, although it may use a lot of magic.”

I explain how delivering her wishes draws on her irreplaceable well of spirit magic. Marie looks down at the bracelet, the gold glowing softly against her skin.

“I will be careful,” she whispers.

“I know,” I say.

Her bond with me deepens as trust between us grows. And the bracelet responds to her with a warmth I have not felt since our time with Agnès, six years ago.

Marie extinguishes the candle and lies down, the bracelet resting lightly against her wrist. Outside, the river murmurs. Inside, the magic hums softly. Marie sleeps. And I watch over her, ready for the wish that will change her life.
