Chapter 23: Parting Company

The air is still cool as dawn paints the sky pale gold. The kasbah courtyard is still quiet although the nursery has already come to life. Yasmin sleeps in her bed, her breaths rising and falling beneath embroidered cloth. Amina sits nearby, sipping warm milk, her posture composed, and her eyes thoughtful.

Madeleine stands at the door to the nursery with her veil drawn, her hand clasped tightly around the bracelet. She hasn’t slept. Although she arrived at her decision quickly, she has spent the hours of darkness trying to find flaws in her choice.

I feel her thoughts through the bracelet. These days they are steady with grounded certainty, something that wasn’t there before. She steps into the courtyard.

Amina looks up. “Have you have chosen?”

Madeleine nods. Her voice is soft, but unwavering. “Yes. I will stay.”

Amina’s expression doesn’t change, but something in her eyes warms, conveying relief, gratitude, and quiet pride.

“You belong here,” she says. “And I don’t mean merely as my son’s concubine.”

Madeleine’s breath trembles. “Yes. The kasbah has become my home.”

Madeleine kneels beside Yasmin’s bed, brushing a gentle hand over the child’s cheek. Yasmin stirs, then settles again, sensing Madeleine’s presence even in sleep. Madeleine leans down and kisses her forehead. Not as a farewell but a promise.

Later, when the household stirs and the envoy arrives to conclude his final negotiations, Madeleine walks to the reception hall with steady steps. The eunuchs escort her, but she does not hover close to them. She doesn’t tremble as she once did. More importantly, she doesn’t look back.

The envoy sees her and rises immediately, hope lighting his face.

“Madeleine,” he says softly. “Have you decided?”

She nods. “Yes.”

He waits. She removes the bracelet from her wrist and holds it out to him.

His brow furrows. “What is this?”

“A family piece,” she says. “It belonged to my grandmother.”

She lies gently, not to deceive him, but to protect the truth that must remain hidden.

“I want it returned to France,” she says. “To my family.”

The envoy takes it carefully, reverently. “Of course.”

Madeleine’s voice softens. “Don’t tell them where it came from.”

He hesitates. “They will want to know.”

“Tell them only that it was found,” she says. “That it survived a shipwreck.”

He nods slowly, understanding more than Madeleine says aloud.

“And you?” he asks. “Will you not come home?”

Madeleine’s breath steadies. “I am home.”

The envoy’s eyes soften with pity, then respect. He bows deeply.

“I will honour your wish.”

Madeleine bows in return, then steps back. The eunuchs guide her away. She doesn’t look at the bracelet again.

When she reaches the quiet of the women’s corridor, she stops, leaning against the wall, breath trembling.

I appear beside her for the last time. A final wish she had made before parting with the bracelet. Her desire to say farewell to me in private. She looks at me, eyes shining with emotion.

“I’m staying,” she whispers.

“I know.”

“I’m afraid.”

“I know.”

She swallows hard. “Will you ... will you be all right?”

I smile, soft and warm with a hint of pride. “I carry he memory of every woman who has worn the bracelet. I will carry the memory of you too.”

Her eyes fill with tears. “I don’t want to lose you.”
