Chapter 15: Justice

The eunuchs lead Lucia into the Valide’s audience chamber. It’s the same serene room where she first stood trembling before the Valide and Hatice only a few days before. But today, the air feels heavier. As though the walls themselves are listening.

Lucia’s steps falter and her breath trembles. She clutches the bracelet as if it were the last thread holding her to the world. I walk unseen beside her in my ethereal form.

Hafsa Hatun sits on her raised divan with and unreadable expression. Gülfem Hatun stands to her right. Two eunuchs flank the doorway behind us and a third stands to the left of the Valide.

Ayşe stands to one side of the room facing the Valide. Her head is bowed and her hands clasped tightly. Her shoulders are stiff betraying her fear which radiates from her like heat. Mahidevran stands behind her looking serene and composed, her veil arranged perfectly. Her eyes gleam with quiet satisfaction, betraying her guilt.

Lucia stops before the divan and bows deeply. “Valide,” she greets Hafsa Hatun with a whisper, her voice barely steady.

Hafsa Hatun gestures. “Rise.”

Lucia straightens, her hands trembling at her sides. Hafsa’s gaze is calm, but sharp enough to cut stone. “A letter from the Venetian ambassador was found among your belongings,” she says. “A letter that implicates you in acts of espionage.”

Lucia’s breath catches. “Valide, I...”

“Silence,” Hafsa says softly. Not cruelly. Just firmly.

Lucia bows her head and Hafsa continues.

“You are foreign. You are newly arrived. You have not yet proven your loyalty. Such evidence cannot be ignored.”

Ayşe’s shoulders tense. Mahidevran’s lips curve in the faintest smile. Lucia’s pulse races through the bracelet. I steady her emotions with a soft pulse of magic, calming the storm, but not altering her thoughts.

Hafsa turns her gaze to Ayşe. “Ayşe,” she says, “you discovered the letter.”

Ayşe lifts her head slightly. “Yes, Valide.”

Her voice is too sweet. Too careful.

Hafsa’s eyes narrow. “Explain.”

Ayşe bows her head again. “I entered the dormitory to fetch my embroidery. I saw the letter on Lucia’s cushion. I feared it was dangerous, so I brought it to Mahidevran Hatun who told me to hand it to the eunuchs.”

Mahidevran nods approvingly, as though Ayşe is a loyal servant. Lucia’s breath trembles. She looks towards me, terrified, pleading.

“Stay calm,” I whisper into her mind. “Point out that the letter is written in Turkish. Question why the Venetian ambassador would write a letter to you written in Turkish. And why he would be so careless as to implicate you in espionage when his letter could be read by anybody before it reached you.”

“May I speak in my defence,” says Lucia.

Lucia repeats my words once the Valide grants her permission to speak. Hafsa gestures for a eunuch to hand her the letter. He brings it to her. She reads it silently. The room holds its breath. Finally, Hafsa lifts her gaze to Ayşe. Her voice is dangerously calm.

“Lucia has a valid point,” says Hafsa, before turning to one the eunuchs by her side. “Fetch Nergis, the language tutor, and tell her to bring samples of the handwriting of all those she is currently training.”

The eunuch obeys the order I silently influenced the Valide to make. Five minutes later, Nergis arrives with the requested samples.

“This handwriting,” says the Valide selecting one of the samples, “matches the letter Ayşe handed to the eunuchs. The letter is undoubtedly written in Ayşe’s own handwriting. Search her belongings for any further evidence.”

When the eunuch returns with the draft of the letter I discovered earlier, Ayşe’s face drains of colour. “Valide, I ... I only...”

“Do not lie,” Hafsa says.

Ayşe collapses into a bow, forehead touching the floor. “I was afraid,” she pleads. “I thought the foreign girl would rise too quickly. I thought she would threaten us. I only wished to protect the harem.”

Mahidevran steps forward. “Valide, Ayşe is young. She acted foolishly, but...”

Hafsa raises a hand. Mahidevran falls silent. The Valide’s gaze sweeps the room, cold and precise.

“Ayşe Hatun,” she says, “you have committed a grave offence. You planted false evidence. You attempted to destroy the reputation of an innocent woman. A woman who is a representative of a state the Ottoman Empire wishes to keep in favour. You have not only endangered the stability of this household, but came close to causing a diplomatic rift with an ally.”

Ayşe sobs softly. Hafsa turns to Lucia.

“Lucia Contarini,” she says, “you have shown restraint. You did not lash out. You did not accuse without proof. You handled this matter with the dignity befitting the role the doges of Venice undoubtedly intend you to perform.”

Lucia’s eyes shine with relief. “Valide ... thank you.”

Hafsa’s voice softens, just slightly.

“You have shown wisdom beyond your rank.”

She gestures to the eunuchs.

“Remove Ayşe. She is reduced to the rank of odalisque and is to be reassigned to the Edirne harem.”

Ayşe cries out, but the eunuchs take her by the arms and lead her away. Mahidevran watches, her expression tight, her plans are unravelling and her own involvement at risk of exposure. Her position as the mother of the Sultan’s only son protects her to some degree, but her influence within the harem is weakened.

When the door closes, Hafsa turns back to Lucia.

“You have proven yourself loyal,” she says. “And resourceful.”

Lucia bows deeply, tears of relief slipping down her cheeks. Hafsa’s gaze warms.

“Rise, Lucia.”

Lucia rises.

“You will continue your training,” Hafsa says. “But know that you have earned my respect.”

Lucia’s breath trembles. “I will not fail you.”

Hafsa inclines her head in acknowledgement. She gestures to the eunuch. “Escort Lucia back to the dormitory.”

Lucia bows again, then turns to leave.

I float beside her, invisible to everyone in the room.
