Chapter 104: The Gold Rush
San Francisco, 1848–1849
The family’s recovery from the financial woes of 1839 have been slow, but steady. After the war, Harrington’s business reputation recovers but his relationship with Eleanor becomes distant and cool. She remains the dutiful wife, and caring mother to Sarah, but Harrington’s hopes for a son to follow in his footsteps are not to be.
San Francisco changes in a single breath. One morning, San Francisco is a modest settlement of merchants, sailors, and families. The next, it is a city ... a roaring, feverish tide of men pouring in from every direction, shouting of gold, gold, gold. Ships crowd the bay like startled birds. Some are abandoned entirely, their crews rushing inland before the anchors even settle.
The streets swell with the crush of humanity. Prices rise like flames. Fortunes appear and vanish in hours.
I feel the shift as a vibration through the bracelet ... not magical, but human. A collective pulse of ambition, greed, hope, and desperation. It brushes against me like a thousand hands, each reaching for something they cannot name.
Edward Harrington breathes it in like oxygen. He stands at the window of their home, watching the chaos unfold with a smile that is too sharp, too bright. His pulse hums with excitement, with hunger, with the certainty that this is his moment. His chance to avenge the humiliation and losses of 1839.
Eleanor watches him with quiet worry. She wears the bracelet today ... not for luck, nor for confidence, but because she feels the city’s frenzy pressing against her like a rising tide. Her pulse is tight, anxious, and fluttering.
She wishes softly, “I hope Edward finds his footing in all this.”
The magic responds as it has done before. Blind. Automatic.
I stir uneasily.
Harrington moves through the transformed city with the confidence of a man who believes chaos is simply the catalyst for opportunity. He buys stakes in mining claims. He invests in supply routes. He negotiates with men who smell of sweat, dust, and desperation.
Everywhere he goes, the city roars. Saloons overflow. Tents rise in vacant lots. Merchants shout prices that double by the hour. Ships lie abandoned in the harbour, their masts swaying like skeletons.
Eleanor and Sarah follow him through the streets. Eleanor is overwhelmed, but she tries to hide it. She tries to be supportive. She tries to be brave. But her pulse trembles in fear. New dangers are all around them, and she barely recognises what San Francisco has become.
She wishes again, “I hope Edward chooses wisely.”
The magic responds.
A rival investor is delayed by a broken wheel. A miner with a promising claim meets Harrington by chance. A shipment of tools arrives early, giving Harrington an advantage over his rivals.
He interprets each event as proof of his brilliance.
Eleanor interprets them as good fortune.
I remain the silent observer, sensing the imbalance growing ... the tide’s cycle is rising again, faster this time, fuelled by the city’s frenzy.
Weeks pass. Harrington’s wealth multiplies. His name spreads through the saloons and markets. Men seek him out for partnerships, advice, and opportunities.
He becomes a figure of influence ... not because he is wise, but because the bracelet’s magic nudges events around him like invisible hands.
Eleanor wears me more often now. Not daily. But enough.
Her wishes grow larger, shaped by the city’s fever and her husband’s ambition.
“I hope we stay ahead of the chaos.”
“I hope Edward’s luck holds.”
“I hope nothing threatens our future.”
The magic responds. But as always literal wishes do not understand balance or consequence.
I feel the strain building like a pressure inside the bracelet. Harrington doesn’t see it ... he never has. Eleanor’s weak alignment to the Three Realms means she doesn’t feel it. Only I do.
The city roars. The gold fever spreads. The incoming tide still rises but not for much longer.
