Chapter 102: Rise and Fall

San Francisco, 1836–1838

San Francisco grows around them. What was once a quiet outpost becomes a restless, expanding settlement ... new wharves, new shops, new ambitions rising like scaffolding around Edward Harrington’s dreams. He thrives in this environment. He moves through the streets with a confident stride, greeting merchants, surveying land, speaking of opportunity as though he alone can see the shape of the future.

Eleanor watches him with a mixture of pride and worry. She wears the bracelet more often now. Not daily ... never daily ... but enough that I feel her pulse regularly, a faint warmth brushing against my awareness. Her intuition is strong, but her alignment to the Three Realms remains weak. Her wishes grow slightly larger, slightly bolder, shaped by her husband’s ambitions and her desire to support him.

“I hope Edward’s venture succeeds.”

“I hope this land deal works out.”

“I hope he finds the right partners.”

The magic responds. Not subtly. Not wisely. Not safely. But literally.

The first major shift comes with a land auction. Harrington stands among a crowd of men ... Californios, Americans, sailors, opportunists ... each shouting bids, each convinced they are on the cusp of greatness. Eleanor watches from the edge of the crowd, her gloved hand resting lightly on me. Her own intuition identifies those who are merely opportunists and penniless scoundrels. She has no need to use magic, but she unwittingly does so each time she wears the bracelet.

She wishes, softly, “I hope Edward wins.”

The magic interprets this with mechanical precision.

A rival’s horse had thrown a shoe that morning, delaying his arrival so that he misses the auction. Another man receives urgent news and leaves the auction early. A third misreads the lot numbers and bids on the wrong parcel of land.

Edward wins easily.

He believes it is skill. He believes it is destiny. He believes it is proof of his brilliance.

Eleanor smiles, relieved. Her pulse warms against me.

I’m unable to warn her that the magic has no sense of balance, no understanding of consequence. It only fulfils her wishes. Literally.

Weeks later, Harrington negotiates for a shipping contract ... one that could transform his modest income into genuine wealth. Eleanor wears the bracelet that morning, her fingers trembling slightly as she fastens the clasp.

“I hope Edward gets the contract,” she whispers.

The magic responds. A storm damages a competing merchant’s ship. A clerk misfiles a document that would have complicated the deal. A merchant who planned to undercut Harrington falls ill and withdraws from the meeting.

Edward Harrington wins the contract.

He returns home triumphant, lifting his wife off her feet, spinning her in the small parlour as though they are characters in a story he is writing for himself.

Eleanor laughs, breathless, and joyful. Her pulse glows warm against me.

Success follows success.

A warehouse dispute resolves itself when a foreman unexpectedly quits. A shipment arrives early due to favourable winds. A merchant who owes Harrington money pays him back in full ... something he had never done for anyone else.

Eleanor continues to believe Edward and she are lucky. Harrington begins to believe he is unstoppable. The townspeople begins to whisper his name with admiration.

However, I feel the imbalance growing. Small cracks in the success. The magic is blind and it is beginning to accumulate pressure. And I’m powerless to shape it.

Weeks after her husband’s latest triumph, Eleanor moves slowly through the small parlour, one hand resting absently against her stomach. Her pulse feels different today ... warmer, fuller, carrying a subtle rhythm I have never felt from her before.

She pauses beside the window, gripping the sill as a wave of dizziness passes through her. Edward notices immediately.

“Are you unwell?” he asks, crossing the room with uncharacteristic gentleness.

Eleanor shakes her head, a shy smile forming. “No. I ... I think I know what this is.”

Her voice trembles with something fragile and luminous.

Edward Harrington’s eyes widen. “Eleanor?”

She takes his hand and places it lightly against her abdomen.

“I believe we’re going to have a child.”

For a moment, Harrington is silent ... stunned, breathless, his ambition briefly eclipsed by wonder. Then he pulls her into an embrace, laughing with a joy that feels almost too large for the small room.
