Paul Fletcher sat on the edge of his bed, the silence of the house feeling heavier than it had only a few minutes earlier. He was forty-three and, for most of his life, had assumed he was a man of steady, predictable instincts. He liked his job, he liked his routines, and he liked the quiet comfort of being the sort of father whose daughter genuinely enjoyed spending time with him.
But right now, he had a painful erection he needed to get rid of. Gemma’s quick, improvised cheerleader sequence had felt like an eternity for him. The image of her—the sudden, sharp movement of her legs, the flash of a bright smile, and the sheer, uninhibited confidence of her youth—had acted like a physical trigger. He felt a surge of heat rush south, an insistent, heavy throb that made the fabric of his trousers feel suddenly, agonizingly tight. He was a good man, a father, a respectable neighbor, but the biological reality of his forty-three-year-old body didn’t care about his social standing. The erection was sharp and demanding, a painful reminder of a fantasy he had harbored for years: the archetypal energy of a cheerleader, the spirit of a girl who existed in a world of pep rallies and high-energy choreography.
He knew he should simply stand up, walk to the kitchen, and drink a glass of cold water until the feeling subsided, but the biological momentum was too strong. The sight of her toes had unlocked something visceral, a sudden, frantic need for release that felt almost desperate.
Slowly, with a shaking hand, he reached for the button of his trousers. He leaned back against the headboard, closing his eyes to better project himself back into those few seconds of movement. He didn’t want to think about the specific girl; he wanted to think about the idea of her—the archetype of the cheerleader, the embodiment of an energy that felt light-years away from his own beige existence. He imagined the bright colors of a uniform, the rhythmic clapping of hands, and the way the air seemed to crackle when someone that young and vibrant entered a room.
His movements became rhythmic and hurried, driven by a mixture of desperate physical need and the fear of being interrupted. The pain of the erection had transitioned into a searing, focused pleasure. He felt a sudden, sharp spike of adrenaline as he imagined Gemma sitting on his lap. The fantasy was an anchor, pulling him away from his identity as a father and a homeowner and stripping him down to a raw, biological impulse.
The release was violent and sudden, a crashing wave that left him shaking and breathless. For a few seconds, the world felt focused and clear, the tension in his lower back finally dissolving into a dull, warm ache. He lay there for a moment, his chest heaving, staring up at the ceiling.
Slowly, the fog of pleasure evaporated, replaced by a cold, sinking sensation in his gut. He began to clean himself up with a series of quick, mechanical movements, his face flushing a deep red. He looked at his hands, still slightly trembling, and felt an immediate, visceral disconnect between the man who had just experienced that release and the man who was supposed to be the steady, moral center of his daughter’s life.
He stood still for a moment, listening. The sounds from the other room had shifted from laughter to the rhythmic, low hum of a conversation, the kind of effortless chatter that only exists between teenagers. The contrast between their lightness and his sudden, heavy shame was stifling. He felt as though he had committed a crime in the sanctuary of his own home, a transgression that existed only in his mind but felt written across his forehead in ink. He avoided his reflection in the dresser mirror, fearing he would see a stranger staring back—someone driven by a hunger he had spent years pretending didn’t exist.
A sudden burst of laughter drifted up from the landing, followed by the sound of a door swinging open. Paul froze, his heart hammering against his ribs, his mind racing through the logistics of how he looked. Was his face too flushed? Was his breathing still too heavy? He barely had time to straighten his posture before Sophie appeared in the doorway, her expression one of casual curiosity.
“Dad? Gemma wants to know if we’ve got any more of those cinder toffees,” she asked, leaning against the doorframe with a familiarity that usually warmed him, but now made him feel exposed.
“Cinder toffees? I think there are a few left on the second shelf,” Paul replied, his voice sounding thin and unfamiliar even to himself. He didn’t look at her directly, instead focusing on a loose thread along the edge of his duvet, his fingers twitching.
Sophie lingered for a moment, her head tilted. “Are you all right? You look like you’ve seen a ghost.” She almost smiled, knowing perfectly well what her dad had just done.
“Just a bit of a headache,” he lied, finally meeting her eyes with a practised, fatherly smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Go on, tell Gemma to help herself. I’m going to have a lie-down.”
As she turned and skipped away, her laughter echoing down the landing, Paul sank back onto the bed for a fleeting moment. The biological urgency had gone, replaced by a hollow, echoing guilt. He felt like a trespasser in his own life, a man who had let a forbidden fantasy bridge the gap between a polite social interaction and a private, desperate act.
A moment later, the door opened again. Sophie and Gemma stood there, both smiling.
“We’re thinking of going into the shopping centre after we’ve finished studying,” Sophie announced, glancing at Gemma with a spark of excitement. “Can we have some money?”
Paul simply reached for his wallet, careful not to draw attention to his groin. He pulled out a couple of tenners and held them out to Sophie. Gemma looked at him and pouted. He sighed and handed over another tenner.
“Thanks, Dad!” Sophie said.
“Thanks, Mr. F!” Gemma replied, spinning round quickly enough to give him the briefest glimpse of her knickers.
After the girls left, Paul closed his eyes, but sleep refused to come.
Jess’s trainers hit the welcome mat with deliberate force—one, two—before she pivoted on her heel to face Mia. “Operation iClub,” she whispered, peeling off her left sock with agonising slowness. The fabric stuck briefly to her arch before dropping to the hardwood with a damp sound.
John Carter didn’t glance up from his golf tournament—not when Jess’s bare toes curled against the cold floorboards, not when she dragged her foot along the rug in a long, feline stretch. But when Jess cleared her throat and asked, “Mr. Carter, do you have any foot cream?” his fingers spasmed around the remote.
Mia’s nose wrinkled as she kicked off her ballet flats. “She means my feet,” she lied, flopping onto the sofa beside her dad with enough force to make his beer slosh. “Coach says my arches are shit.”
Jess watched John’s gaze flicker to Mia’s soles—pale and dusted with freckles like cinnamon sugar—before darting away. “Actually,” Jess interrupted, hiking her skirt to mid-thigh as she perched on the coffee table, “mine are worse.” She extended her right leg slowly, toes pointed like a ballerina’s until her foot hovered inches from Mr. Carter’s knee.
Jess’s toes flexed—a deliberate ripple of muscles from arch to painted nails—and Mia watched her father’s Adam’s apple bob hard enough to displace his collar. The golf commentary droned on unnoticed as Jess traced her big toe along the seam of Mr. Carter’s khakis, leaving a faint streak of sweat on the fabric.
“See?” Jess murmured, rotating her ankle with showgirl precision. The callus on her heel—earned from months of stomping around in Docs—grazed his thigh through the thin cotton. “Total trainwreck.”
Mia’s dad made a noise like a deflating tyre. His fingers clenched around the remote, thumb mashing the volume button until the TV blared static. “You girls shouldn’t—”
“—neglect proper podiatric care?” Jess finished sweetly, sliding forward until her skirt hem brushed his kneecap. She wiggled her toes in his face, the scent of leather and adolescent sweat wafting between them. “Coach says untreated corns can lead to serious complications.”
Mia snorted into her soda can. “Yeah, Dad. Serious.”
John Carter cleared his throat—twice—before managing to point towards the hallway bathroom. “Foot cream’s in the medicine cabinet,” he rasped, fingers tightening around the remote until the plastic creaked. “Green tube.”
Mia bounded off the sofa before he’d finished speaking, bare feet slapping against the hardwood with a rhythm that matched the frantic pulse in Jess’s throat. She returned clutching the tube like a trophy, squeezing a dollop onto her palms with exaggerated ceremony. The scent of mint and eucalyptus flooded the living room as she knelt before Jess, fingers hovering over the arch of her foot like a pianist preparing for a concerto.
Jess’s breath hitched when Mia’s thumbs pressed into her instep—too hard at first, then perfect. “Christ, your hands are freezing,” Jess muttered, flexing her toes against Mia’s palms. John’s gaze burned a hole through the TV screen, his beer forgotten on the coffee table as Mia’s fingers worked lower, kneading the ball of Jess’s foot with slow, deliberate circles.
Jess arched an eyebrow as Mia’s fingers slid between her toes, the pressure feather-light. “Christ, it’s like being molested by a ghost,” she muttered, kicking her foot impatiently. Her heel connected with Mia’s thigh—not hard enough to bruise, but enough to make her yelp. “Mr. Carter,” Jess purred, twisting to face him with her leg still extended across Mia’s lap, “your daughter rubs feet like she’s apologising to them.”
John’s beer bottle sweat condensation onto his khakis. The golf tournament played silent explosions of green as Jess wiggled her toes in his periphery. “Mia’s always been ... gentle,” he managed, throat bobbing above his collar.
Jess snorted, flexing her foot until the tendons stood in sharp relief. “I don’t need gentle,” she said, rolling her ankle with deliberate slowness. A bead of sweat slid down her arch, glistening in the lamplight. “I need deep tissue. The kind that leaves bruises.” Her smirk sharpened as John’s gaze tracked the moisture trail. “C’mon, Mr. C. Show your kid how it’s done.”
Mia made a show of wiping her hands on her skirt as she stood. “Bathroom,” she announced to no one in particular, already backing towards the hallway. Her smirk mirrored Jess’s when her dad’s eyes flickered towards her retreating form—guilty, hungry, relieved. The bathroom door clicked shut with forensic precision.
Jess exhaled through her nose, stretching her legs until her skirt rode up her thighs. The hem caught on the damp patch where Mia’s palms had been. “Well?” she prompted, drumming her fingers against her kneecap. “You gonna make me beg, or what?”
Jess swung her legs up onto the sofa with practised nonchalance, letting her bare feet land squarely in John Carter’s lap. Her toes flexed against the rough fabric of his khakis, the warmth of his thighs radiating through the material.
“You can start,” she murmured, wiggling her pinky toe in his direction. The nail polish—chipped from yesterday’s lacrosse practice—flaked off under his thumb when he finally touched her.
