Chapter 1
Test Subject #1
Getting old sucks, Bigtime! For me it started 20 years ago. My wife died when I was 58. We had been married 35 years, had 2 kids and a perfect marriage. I never cheated on her and I would bet my life she never cheated on me. She was never sick a day in her life. Hell, she did not even need glasses! One morning she did not wake up. The medical examiner said she had a heart attack and died in her sleep. She was lucky!
About a year after losing her, I picked up a sack of feed and felt something pop in my shoulder. The result was a shoulder operation. It hurts to this day. A couple of years later I stepped in a hole. My first knee operation. It got infected, resulting in my second knee operation. My knee is stiff and I walk with a cane. Six years ago, I woke up one morning and could not pee. By ten o’clock I was in a doctor’s office and he put a catheter in me. Ever have one of those? I do not wish it on anyone. The problem persisted and after two more catheters were inserted over the next six months, it was decided I needed an operation. I was put to sleep and a 3/8-inch drill bit bored a hole in my prostrate. I was told it would close ack in a few years and I would have to have it done again! In the meantime, I was to take this medicine every day to keep my prostrate from swelling. The side effect was no more erections! Since my wife died, I had not dated, but I enjoyed watching porn on the computer and ... well you get the idea.
I was accepting all these problems, thinking they were all part of just getting old, when it happened.
One morning I noticed I could not see my entire face in the bathroom mirror. I thought I had cataracts. My daughter, who is divorced, lives with me. My 21-year-old granddaughter also lives with us. She is a junior in college. Sorry, sometimes I ramble off topic. My daughter took me to the eye doctor where I was informed I did not have cataracts. It was something called Age Related Micro-Degeneration; AMD for short. The doctor said there was no cure and that I would be totally blind in a few months.
