Kayla came over on a Tuesday — chips, couch, plan to complain about her cousins — and I heard the truck before she finished her first sentence.
Rattle in the tailgate. Two blocks out.
“What’s that?” she said.
“Cole.”
She turned toward the back of the house like a dog tracking a sound.
Cole came through the back door — cooler, boots, dirt track across the tile. Shirt stuck to him at the collar and back. Six weeks of outdoor work had left him dark-tanned from the wrists up. He said hey at the room, went to the fridge.
Kayla sat up fast enough that chips nearly went. She pulled her shirt straight and tucked her hair.
Cole took his water and went upstairs without looking at either of us. His boots on the steps. Then the shower overhead.
Kayla turned to me. “Oh my god.”
“Don’t.”
“I’m not doing anything.”
“You’re doing something.”
She ate a chip and did not stop doing it.
When he came back downstairs Kayla was already in the kitchen doorway.
“Do you need help?” she said.
He looked at her. “I’m making a sandwich.”
“Right.” She laughed at nothing. “You’re so tan.”
“Landscaping.”
“That’s so cool.” She leaned on the frame with one shoulder, her hip against the wood, her shirt riding up on one side. “Is college hard? Like harder than people say?”
He told her about his major. She asked a follow-up that didn’t quite make sense. He answered it anyway, patient, the way you’d answer your sister’s friends. He looked at her directly when she talked.
He hadn’t looked at me directly since we got back.
I watched the TV.
“Oh — Nate’s been texting me,” Kayla said. She was talking to me but she wasn’t looking at me. “Asking if you’d be around this summer.”
I looked at her.
“You were literally obsessed with him, remember? We spent a whole week deciding if he liked you.” She was smiling. Cole was looking at his sandwich. “He’s so cute. I don’t know why you never did anything.”
Cole put his plate in the sink.
