A hall shattered in the Ruins of Zalesia from colliding magic.

A crimson bolt exploded against ancient stone as the Faceless One staggered backward. He wore armor of skeletons and black robes, but on this day his robes tore where Skeletor’s spell had struck only moments before.

The Havoc Staff whirled again.

“Age has made you slow, old man,” Skeletor sneered.

The Faceless One answered with a wave of his hand. The Lord of Zalesia was not one to waste his efforts in overly gaudy movements and incantations being shouted. Instead, pale blue sigils lit up beneath Skeletor’s feet; however, the Lord of Destruction shattered them with a violent blast before driving the ram-headed staff into the old mage’s chest.

The blow hurled him across the chamber.

“You swore,” the Faceless One said between measured breaths, “never to return here.”

The head of the elder mage looked into that of the Evil Overlord. Of disdainful disappointment, there could be no greater emotion felt in that moment.

Skeletor laughed.

“I have broken greater promises.”

“You vowed to protect Evelyn in exchange for my Havoc Staff and to never return!”

The Faceless One lowered his hands.

“And now you desecrate my home.”

Skeletor let out a gutteral laugh.

“I have need of the Ram Stone.”

“Why?” the Faceless One inquired, suspicious.

“I need it...” Skeletor growled. “ ... to protect Evil-Lyn.”

Silence settled between them.

For the first time since the battle began, the Faceless One searched Skeletor’s face instead of preparing another spell.

“My daughter?”

Skeletor tightened his grip upon the Havoc Staff and threw another blast, which knocked the Faceless One back.

Rather than defend himself, the Faceless One looked into the distance. Others made windows in the air or water, but not him. He commanded ancient magic, so he only needed to summon forth the power and then he could see past great distances to find that which he was looking for.

A circle of silver light formed before his sight. A cave was lit up by a modest fire, and there was a young man. He must have only reached manhood recently, for he was no longer a child by the growth rate of men, but he was certainly young. He could not be older than twenty-five, but in his face, the Faceless One saw the countenance of the long dead King Grayskull himself.

He lay on the floor with a jacket over himself and someone else. No father wishes to see their daughter in any relation to that of sex, but as the Faceless One saw how Evelyn slept peacefully beside this young man, the older man smiled softly. This was not about what his daughter had done but was doing.

One of the young man’s arms was wrapped around her, fently, but both were in the land of dreams. Beside them was the Sword of Power, and the Faceless One knew that Evelyn was no longer in the danger that the once-called Keldor had brought to her life. There was a chance she might find a path to light or at least goodness.

There was no fear upon her face.

That was certainly a start. What father would not want that for their child? As he thought, he considered all that had been and what might be? If he held Skeletor in the Ruins much longer, nothing would be accomplished, but Skeletor was trying to stand against this hero.

Sometimes, the greatest motivator was opposition. Lyn might have found her hero to stand beside, but that hero needed to be tested.

The image faded from his sight as Skeletor released a crushing spell to make the rubble capable of killing the Faceless One with overwhelming force. The elder sorcerer allowed the rocks to fall but shielded himself from the worst of its impact.

Without another word, Skeletor strode past him.

His hand closed around the Ram Stone, which was a green rock in the shape of a ram’s head.

The artifact pulsed once before its light yielded to his grasp.

The Lord of Destruction walked away from the ruins with triumphant laughter. The Faceless One waited until silence reclaimed Zalesia.

Several long moments passed even after that before Evelyn’s father started to laugh.

“My little Evelyn ... please, be safe. I do want you to chart your own course, but stay with this hero. You could be so much more.”

It was both a prayer and wishful thinking, but he did and said no more.

Morning came quickly enough to the cave.

Adam stirred slowly.

A mixture of bliss and dread brewed in his heart and mind when he looked around, for he saw no sign of Lyn, so there was a chance that the previous night had been a dream.

Then he looked up and saw her.

Lyn stood a short distance away with her back partially toward him. The familiar black gown had been gathered around her once more, and she carefully fastened the final clasp near her shoulder. Her white hair fell freely down her back before she reached for the jeweled headdress to hide away her lovely strands of hair.

She noticed him watching.

“Good morning, Adam,” she said.

He blinked.

“ ... Morning.”

A quiet smile crossed his face despite himself.

“Were you planning on leaving?”

She paused before lowering her eyes away from him with the faintest hint of embarrassment.

“The thought had crossed my mind,” she said.

Cringer remained asleep near the cave entrance, entirely unconcerned with the awkward silence that had settled between them.

Adam rubbed the back of his neck.

“I ... I’m not sure what to say.”

“Neither am I,” she confessed...

She lifted her staff from where it leaned against the wall before finally turning to face him fully.

Between them, at that precise moment, they could only look at one another.

Not as He-Man and Evil-Lyn but as Adam and Lyn.

“What happens now?” he finally asked.

She let out a slow breath. For all the questions Adam had, he realized this was the one inquiry she was not looking forward to answering.

“Now...” she said slowly, allowing the single word to linger between them. “I believe it is best that we continue.”

He frowned slightly at that thought.

“Just ... continue? Are you saying we ignore last night?” Adam asked, standing.

The jacket was the only thing allowing him to keep his modesty.
