Chapter 1

Place: Emerson High School, Mr. Nick’s Advanced Biology Class
Time: 1981 (One year before the events of “Zapped!”)

Main Characters:
• Bernadette Holland: Pushy feminist, overachiever, and convinced she was better than everyone else.
• Peyton Nichol: Juvenile, perverted, and the dreamboat of every girl—except Bernadette.
• Jane Mitchell: Beautiful, self-centered, manipulative cheerleader—and therefore popular.
• Barney Springboro: Science whiz kid (not yet telekinetic—that would come next year).
• Mr. Nick: Unconventional teacher with a noticeable soft (and occasionally hard) spot for his female students.

Mr. Nick glanced down at Jane’s legs one more time. As Jane slowly adjusted her skirt upward, she could feel her class participation grade rising along with it. Bernadette responded with a loud “Sheesh!” and rolled her eyes.

“What is your problem, geek?” Jane snapped. Mr. Nick glanced over at Bernadette. Nothing. Not even an ankle.

“Now, where was I?” he asked.

“Our final class project assignments?” Barney piped up from his front-row seat.

“Right,” Mr. Nick continued. “You will be working in two-student teams.”

“Me and Barney again?” Peyton asked.

“That isn’t fair!” Jane protested. She leaned forward, revealing generous cleavage, and squeezed her breasts together. “Peyton always gets Barney. Couldn’t you let someone else in class ... pair up with him?”

“Very well,” Mr. Nick said, clearly captivated. “Mr. Springboro, you’ll work with Miss Mitchell.”

Bernadette snorted. “Watch it, little girl!” Jane snapped, glaring at her.

“And Miss Holland,” Mr. Nick continued, “will work with Mr. Nichol.”

The class let out a collective “Ooooh” at the obvious jab at Bernadette. Everyone knew Barney always did all the work for Peyton.

“The assignment is to demonstrate the theory of Stimulus-Organism-Response.”

“Stimulated orgasm response?” Peyton asked. The class—except Bernadette—burst into laughter.

‘Great,’ Bernadette thought. ‘That’s my lab partner.’

“No,” Mr. Nick said, restoring order. “Each of you will bring in two organisms, either plant or animal, and demonstrate how they can be made to respond in a predetermined way given the proper stimulus.”

“So that’s why my dates end the way they do!” Jane joked with a coy wink at Mr. Nick.

“It only works on lower-order species,” Bernadette answered dryly. “So you may be right.” Jane frosted over.

“Actually,” Mr. Nick replied, “it works on humans too, in theory. But we are such complex organisms that responses are unpredictable. For example, you may slow down approaching a yellow light while Mr. Nichol may speed up.”

“What if the stimulus fails?” Barney asked, concerned. “Will we still get full credit?”

Bernadette looked down her nose at Barney. He had the upper hand in math and science, but she outdid him slightly in every other subject. It was going to be neck-and-neck for valedictorian. ‘If I could just ace this science project... ‘ she thought. ‘But with Peyton?’
