The house and barn look totally different. The house has been painted inside and out. The floors have been sanded and stained. It is full of beautiful hand-made furniture. The sawmill is running at full capacity and selling the finished lumber as fast as they can make it. Everything is going great for the O’Shea family except there is one big problem. Dove is not having babies. She is still young. She has not yet turned 20 years old, they still make love almost every night but no babies.
Two years went by before they decided to go see a doctor to find out what was the problem. He told them that grandfather was sterile. Grandfather had the mumps as a child and had been sterile ever since. He was devastated on hearing the news. Dove not so much. After arriving home, she told him what her mother had seen in her future.
“You remember me telling you that she saw a Brave Warrior saving me and taking me away to a strange green land and that I would have many babies? What I did not tell you is that she also told me that the Warrior would not be the father of my children. The father would be a blood brother of the warrior, a silent man. I would not love him as I loved my warrior but would take care of him like a child. He would also never know that he was the father and neither would anyone else.”
As she told him this she looked into his eyes and saw confusion and jealousy.
“I don’t know if I could live with that.”
But she continued to look into his eyes. She made him realize that there would be no need for jealousy. That she would always be his and his alone. They were going to use Sean only for his seed. He was John’s brother. Their babies would have John’s blood, and everyone would think that they were his own children. Sean would be perfect. With his damaged brain he would not remember and would never know the children were his.
The more grandfather thought about it the more he came to accept the idea. All that was left was to decide how to do it. She wanted John to be part of the process. She did not want to sneak off and have an affair with Sean. She wanted it to be done with love. What she wanted to do would be called artificial insemination today. Sean would only be used as the delivery vehicle for the seed. Her thinking was ahead of her time. She told John that it was common for Apache brothers to swap wives. The babies were raised by the husband of the mother as their own offspring. They were all the same blood. That is where the term ‘blood brother’ originated.
They began planning on how to get Sean involved without scaring him or upsetting him. They decided to have Sean bring water into the house for her bath. As he went for more water she would undress and be standing in a tub naked when he returned. John would begin soaping her and ask Sean to help just like he did with the horses. After bathing her, he would then help dry her off. If everything was going well at this point John would tell Sean to strip off his clothes and let Dove wash him. They wanted to see if Sean’s brain would allow him to have an erection. They had never seen him with a hard on, so they did not know. As Sean stepped into the tub, Dove let the towel she had wrapped around her fall away. She poured the water over his body and began to soap him. As she washed his penis, she noticed it was the same size if not a little smaller than Johns’ in both length and girth. She thought that was good.
