My grandfather was the youngest of 11 brothers and 2 sisters. His mom and dad brought the entire family over from Ireland in 1902. They landed in New York and after making their way through Ellis Island they headed south to Memphis, Tn. A friend had told them they could find work as carpenters, a trade his father had practiced in Ireland. They found very little work there but after a few hard years in Memphis, they were offered work at a sawmill in North Mississippi.
Their job was to cut down trees and haul them to the mill. The company provided a house and the entire family, all 15 of them, moved to a small town close to the Tennessee border. The older boys worked with their dad, the girls and the younger boys helped their mother with the cooking and the chores around the house. There were plenty of trees to cut and everything went well for several years. One of the sisters met a young man, married him and moved to a farm nearby. A couple of the older brothers moved back to Memphis and worked in the construction business.
They were hard workers and while not getting rich, they were living better than they had in Ireland. My grandfather had been put in charge of caring for the horses and mules that were used to drag, or ‘snake’ as they called it, the heavy logs out of the woods. Everyone noticed that he had a special way with the animals. He seemed to be able to handle them when others could not.
In 1912 tragedy struck the family. His mother was traveling to town in a wagon with one of her sons, Sean, when the axel on the wagon broke. They were both thrown off. Her neck was broken; she died instantly! Sean hit his head on a rock and was in a coma for about two weeks. When he woke up, he could not remember anything. After being told what happened and who he was, he seemed confused. He had to be re-introduced to his family and acted like he did not know them. The next morning, he did not know anyone again. This continued for about a week. The doctors diagnosed him with some type of amnesia. They thought he may get better with time and sent him home.
He never got any better. Each day he awoke to a new world. His body was strong, it was his mind that was damaged. He would go to work and handle the horses, dragging the logs from the forest to the mill. The only sister still living at home was 17 at the time and the responsibilities of the household fell on her shoulders. With her father and 9 brothers still at home it was a lot of work for a young girl.
One day my grandfather overheard a man talking about his time in the cavalry. It seemed like a dream job to my grandfather. He loved horses and being around them all the time would be great. He talked to the man and found out that he had been with the 13th cavalry based at Fort Riley Kansas. He asked the man how to get there and was told to go to Memphis and take the train to Kansas. That’s what my grandfather decided to do!
When he got home that night, he talked to his father and told him what he was planning. His dad was not happy with his idea because his son was only 15 years old. The boy was persuasive and talked his dad into not only letting him go but also loaning him $50 for the trip!
The next morning, he hitched a ride on the lumber wagon going to Memphis. At the train station he asked about a ticket to Fort Riley. The man in the window told him he would have to go to Fort Smith Arkansas first, then change trains to Fort Riley. The ticket to Fort Smith was $40. He did not want to spend most of his money on a ticket, so he walked away.
He found a porter and asked when the train to Fort Smith left and was told the time and track number. He saw the train was pulling about 20 box cars and found one unlocked. He rode it all the way to Fort Smith! There he went to the ticket window. The trip to Fort Riley was only $10, so he bought a ticket.
Arriving at Fort Riley he asked where the 13th cavalry was located. He walked into the headquarters office and told the man at the desk he wanted to join up. An officer overheard him and came out of his office. He looked at the skinny little Irishman who still spoke with an Irish accent and said, “You are 16 years old, right?” My grandfather nodded yes. Then the officer said, “Can you sign your name?”
“Yes sir,” was the reply. The officer told the clerk to sign him up and the boy was in the United States Calvary!
He started his training there at Fort Riley. He learned to ride like a calvary trooper, to shoot both the m1903 Springfield rifle and the new m1911.45 caliber automatic pistol. Afterwards he was sent with K troop to Columbus, New Mexico, where he lived at what was called the ‘Cavalry Camp’. For the next 5 years he patrolled the desert frontier chasing Mexican banditos and smugglers. There were always gunfights because these guys did not want to be taken back and put in prison. He lived most of these years on a horse. One of the Apache scouts befriended him and taught him to track and live off the land. It was a hard life, but he would later tell his family it was some of the best years of his life.
Then on March 9, 1916, Pancho Villa attacked the town of Columbus, New Mexico. His cavalry unit survived the attack with very few casualties, but the town was burned to the ground. President Wilson ordered General Pershing to go into Mexico and capture Villa. That started the Mexican Expedition. That’s what the history books call it. Grandfather called it the war with Mexico.
His troop crossed the border and headed south into Mexico. On April the 12th he was at Parral, Mexico, a town 500 miles south of the border. They thought that it was a safe place since it was guarded by Mexican troops. But what they did not know was that the Mexican President and President Wilson had got into a disagreement. The Mexican troops were ordered to attack the Americans. The problem was that there were 500 Mexicans and only about 100 U. S. troopers. They held out for two days before the 10th cavalry came to their rescue.
If you know your history, you know that the 10th Cavalry was also known as the ‘Buffalo Soldiers’. It was the all black unit formed after the War Between the States.
For their actions at Parral the 13th cavalry was designated the 13th Horse. My grandfather returned to Columbus to finish out his 6-year enlistment patrolling the frontier chasing banditos and smugglers. The Mexican Expedition ended without ever catching Pancho Villa and the politicians and the regular soldiers disagreeing with how it was handled.
In February of 1917, the First World War was raging in Europe and everyone was wondering when the United States would get involved. My grandfather decided to get out of the army. He did not want to get sent to fight in the war to end all wars. He was a horse soldier, and he had seen how Pancho Villa’s horsemen had fared against the machine gun squad at the battle in Columbus. There were only four machine guns. They fired 5,000 rounds each in a matter of minutes and had routed the Mexican bandits. He figured he had done enough in his six years on the frontier, and he was missing his family. His father had passed two years ago and the letter had taken over three months to reach him with the news. With only three weeks left on his enlistment, he was called into the Sgt. Majors’ office.
He was ordered to take the mail and a dispatch to one of the furthest outposts of the 13th. Just a shitty little job for the guy who is getting out. It was a 6 day ride out and six days back. But he really did not mind. He liked being out by himself. This would give him some time to think about what he wanted to do with the rest of his life. He was 22 years old. According to the last letter he got from home all his brothers and sisters, except Sean, were married and had kids. So maybe that was in store for him.
