Chapter 9: What Gets Written Down

People talked to each other differently after the mess hall — made eye contact differently. The awkwardness that had lived in the space between some of them since Tuesday morning had given way to something more settled, less defended.

She was near the door when Moss appeared beside her. “I wanted to say one more thing. In person, not on paper.”

She waited.

“You knowing my name — before I introduced myself, before we’d had a single conversation. You read my file because you take people seriously before they’ve given you any reason to.” He looked at her steadily. “I didn’t do that for you. I did the opposite. And I want you to know I understand that the standard you set — taking someone seriously before they’ve proven themselves — is the standard I’m going to try to hold myself to. From now.”

She looked at him for a moment — at the sincerity of him, twenty-two years old, finding his way toward something better than where he’d started.

“Steven. You’re going to be good at this.”

He blinked. “At what?”

“The job. The whole job — not just the tactical part.” A pause. “The human part.”

He stood very still, then nodded once and stepped aside to let her pass.

At fourteen hundred, James received the response to his formal objection. He read it twice, then called Sims into his office and handed it over without a word. Sims read it fast, then slow, then set it on the desk and pressed both hands flat against it.

“They’re classifying the engagement record.” Not a question.

“Partially. The sixteen-hundred-meter shot, the Syria operations — anything connecting her name to outcomes in those missions. Classified above operational level.”

“And the decoration recommendation?”

“Approved. Classified. The decoration exists, her name’s attached to it — but neither can be referenced in any non-classified document.”

Sims stared at the desk. “So she gets the recognition and nobody can know about it.”

“That’s an accurate summary.”

Sims picked the document back up and reread the third paragraph — something had caught his eye both times through. “Wait.”

James nodded. He’d read it too.

“The program,” Sims said slowly. “They’re — they’re expanding it?”

“Three additional operators, to be trained under her supervision, starting in eight weeks.”

Sims looked up.

“She’ll be leading the training program,” James said. “Which means she has an official role — not classified. The role itself is acknowledged, the program, the training mandate.” He paused. “It’s not justice. It’s not what she deserves. But it means her name, in that capacity, can’t be fully erased. There’ll be a record that says Chief Warrant Officer Komiko was responsible for building the next generation of this program. They can’t classify that without classifying the program itself — and they’re not willing to do that.”

Sims set the document down, working through whether what he was looking at was a victory, a compromise, or just a different kind of erasure in better clothes.

“Is it enough?”

“No,” James said immediately. “It’s not. It’ll never fully be enough.” A pause. “But it’s more than there was three days ago. And in eleven years, it’s more than there’s ever been.” He looked at Sims. “I’ll take it. And then I’ll keep pushing.”

Sims nodded slowly. “She needs to hear it from you.”

“I know. I’ll tell her.”

He found her at the firing range — not shooting, standing at the bench with her rifle broken down for cleaning, the maintenance she did after every operation regardless of what was happening in James’s office or anywhere else, because the weapon required it and she didn’t let requirements go unmet.
