Chapter 3: The D’Aubigny Estate
The attraction Jeanne was feeling towards the woman is quickly replaced by fright. The men are watching closely for Jean-Paul’s reaction, probably laying bets as to whether Jean-Paul will buy the whore’s offered bounty. Jeanne cannot deny that she is attracted to the woman, and she can certainly afford the few coins it will take for the whore to spread her legs. Taking the whore upstairs would add credence to her manhood in the eyes of the men. Jeanne is convinced that there are some in the convoy who doubt her authenticity. Bedding this whore would distract any of the men who hold suspicions about her real gender. The moment they return to the convoy, word of Jean-Paul’s sexual prowess would be around the camp in a flash. But the risk of blowing her disguise with the young woman is huge.
The moment the young whore unfastens the top of her dress to allow Jean-Paul a good look at her treasures, Jeanne is sold on taking the gamble. A price is agreed and ‘Marie’ takes Jeanne upstairs to the small room she that uses for her trade. Jeanne’s last glimpse of the soldiers enjoying their ale confirms that her disguise as Jean-Paul has scored a victory. Now all she needs to do is ensure Marie doesn’t blow Jeanne’s disguise to smithereens.
“You are brave to travel with so many rough men,” says Marie, as she unfastens Jeanne’s shirt, revealing her breast binding beneath. “Do they not suspect that you are a woman?”
“Some may have suspicions,” says Jeanne, quickly adjusting her plan to accept that Marie identified Jeanne’s gender at the outset. “I’m hoping that coming up here with you will quash any rumours.”
“I’m sure it will. So, what name do I call you?” asks Marie.
“Jean-Paul,” replies Jeanne. “It’s best that you don’t know my real name.”
“So what are we going to do for the half-hour that you’ve paid for my services?”
“We can talk,” says Jeanne.
“Yes. We can do that. But we can have some fun as well. How long do you intend to keep up this disguise?” asks Marie as she frees Jeanne’s breasts from the constraints they’ve endured for over a week.
“Only until I reach Lyon.”
Jeanne is unsure why she is throwing caution to the wind and submitting to the wiles of the young whore. Marie is skilful at her trade, and Jeanne soon finds herself a willing participant sexual acts that church and state strictly forbid. Jeanne isn’t so naïve as to be unaware of the erogenous zones of her body. Her hands have been between her legs on numerous occasions in the quiet of her bedroom. However, having another woman performing such intimate acts generates more pleasure than Jeanne feels that it should. Although there is no requirement of Jeanne to reciprocate Marie’s actions, she finds herself unable to resist doing so.
Despite Marie’s warm and friendly demeanour, she remains true to her profession. Jeanne had paid for half an hour of Marie’s time, and that’s all that she’s allowed. Feeling replete, Jeanne rebinds her breasts and dresses herself while Marie does the same. The pair descend the stairs back to the tavern below. Jeanne sees the soldiers still at their table, well into their second tankard of ale. They notice Jean-Paul’s return and make some very rude comments about his manly prowess. Jeanne takes it in good spirit and by the time they return to camp, it’s highly unlikely any man in the convoy still has doubts that Jean-Paul is anything other than a youthful man.
Two days later the convoy reaches Lyon and Captain Dubois reports to the commanding officer at the military hospital. Now Jeanne must work out how to leave her travelling companions without raising suspicion. The military hospital in Lyon is already full but the commanding officer isn’t so callous as to turn the convoy away. However, he can only take a third of the soldiers who journeyed south. Some of those whose injuries are nearly healed are simply discharged from the army and sent on their way. Others are assigned to regular barracks and placed under the care of the regiment’s medical orderlies. It’s an unsatisfactory arrangement, but with so few resources, and so many men in need of care, there is little anyone can do.
As for Captain Dubios, Jean-Paul and the rest of the medical staff who escorted the convoy, they are simply told to report to their own regiment for orders. For Captian Dubois and his men, that means returning north-east to Belfort in the morning. Jean-Paul’s supposed regiment is currently based in Dijon to the north. However, Jeanne has no intention of going there.
The next morning Jeanne parts company with Captain Dubois and his men. This is the opportunity Jeanne has been wanting to switch back to being a woman. However, to do that, she’ll need appropriate clothing. Clearly she couldn’t travel with a dress among her few belongings. Now she must work out how to acquire what she needs without arousing suspicion. Jeanne still needs to be careful in case her father sends agents to search for her. She took a risk in confiding in Marie, but even she doesn’t know too much about Jeanne.
Lyon is an industrial city on the banks of the Rhône river. River trade flows north to Dijon, east to Switzerland and south to the Mediterranean Sea. In better times the city is busy and prosperous. However, the political conflict between the republicans and monarchists affects Lyon just as much as everywhere else. Both sides of the political divide use the city’s rampant unemployment, crime and poverty as weapons. Strikes and riots are frequent and the local militia units are busy keeping some semblance of order.
Although she walks the street alone, Jeanne’s army uniform offers a deterrent from random assault. The army has a fearsome reputation for exacting revenge on any citizen who assaults a soldier in uniform. As she turns a street corner, she sees a group of men assaulting a well dressed man outside a factory gate. Jeanne steps forward towards the group before the seriousness of the situation registers in her mind.
“Let’s get out of here,” shouts one of the men. “The army is arriving.”
