It was a warm spring morning when the buses started arriving at Madison High. The gossip and chatter of the day was about a girl who went slut-crazy and wandered into the guys’ locker room and let them have her. Of course, the detail and scope of the story and participants varied wildly from teller to listener. Some said it was just a girl who was confused and went into the wrong locker room and started changing before realizing her mistake. Other versions had her taking on fifty guys and was practicing for her career in porn.

When Brittany found Warren at his locker that morning, she must have heard ten different versions of events just walking from her car. The small-town gossip was one of the things she couldn’t wait to get away from next year. After four years of being at or around the center of people’s stories, she wanted to be nothing but a face in the crowd somewhere.

“Hey, Brittany,” Warren said when he saw his beautiful girlfriend approaching. The two shared a quick kiss before heading towards their first class of the day.

“How many times did you hear it?” Brittany asked.

It brought a groan from Warren. “I don’t know. How many people fit on a school bus. Did you hear she took three guys at a time while jerking four more? Fuckin’ idiots.”

“It’s unbelievable. I feel really bad for Willa. I hope she’s ok,” Brittany replied.

Warren knew that she meant it. It wasn’t just because she was a good person, he could see it on her face. He’d known her long enough to tell when she was struggling with something. Back before the storm, he used to relish seeing it. Sometimes it meant boyfriend troubles, which brought him joy. Other times, though, it was school related and it made him feel better if she was struggling on something, too.

With dark bags under her eyes, Brittany looked tired. He hadn’t seen her look like that since he was in the hospital. Her usually perfectly brushed blonde hair had frayed bits poking out here and there. She wasn’t anywhere near Andrea’s left of wild, unkempt hair, but for the usually prim and proper Brittany, it stuck out to him.

“You ok?” he asked, pulling her aside and out of the highway of foot traffic.

Brittany shook her head. “I couldn’t sleep last night. All I kept thinking about was that it was all my fault. I didn’t listen to the warnings that it could be a problem. I was just thinking about the science of it all.”

Warren put his arms around her. “Look, it’s ok. Karla will talk to her today and we’ll see how she’s doing. You know better than anyone that this shit builds momentum fast and then breaks on the rocks when the next crazy bit of gossip starts the cycle again,” he said calmly. “This place, this school ... none of it matters beyond the borders of the district. Little people living their little lives, clinging for any bits of excitement to fill their empty existences.”

“Wow, even for you, that’s bleak,” Brittany said, a little shocked.

Warren shrugged his shoulders. “I’ve spent four years here being laughed at, hit, stuffed into lockers, beaten, and generally degraded. With the exception of the last few months, I’ve hated this place. I can’t wait to move on and go someplace where being smart is a good thing.”

“I mean, I’m looking forward to getting out of here as well. I’m tired of the back-biting and small-mindedness. I can’t wait to just be a normal small fish in a big pond.”

“You’ll always be the prettiest fish in any pond.” Warren half-smiled, he felt the weight of his conversation with Quinn settling in. It didn’t seem like the time to talk about it; there were more pressing matters. He held her hand and turned back into the stream of walking students. Brittany didn’t move.

“What’s wrong?” she asked, reeling him back to her.

“Nothing, it’s not important right now,” Warren replied, motioning to keep walking. “We don’t want to be late for class.”

Brittany held firm though. She also knew him well enough to know there was a problem. Beyond their brief time dating she also kept her eye on her academic rival. Not much flustered him, unless she was beating him in a discussion. He was typically measured and calm. She knew now that there was a lot of anger and rage bubbling under the surface, but also passion and joy. The most important thing to her though, was that he always spoke his mind. Holding his tongue like this was unusual.

“What aren’t you telling me?” she pressed him.

Warren looked away, down the hall. He was hoping for an out from this conversation. He didn’t want to have it right there in the hall for all the ears to hear. The sympathy he gained from his attack had fizzled out. The populace was back to heaping him with a scornful indifference for dating out of his league.

“I don’t really want to talk about it here or right now, with everything going on.” He was trying to deflect and kick that can down the road; it didn’t work.

“No, you have to tell me. It seems important,” Brittany argued.

“It isn’t. It can wait till later.”

“Warren? What’s going on?”

Warren knew she could be like this, her ferocity to find answers when presented with a question was what made her a top student. She was driven and inquisitive, sometimes to a fault. This was one of those times. He knew she wasn’t going to let go of this.

“It’s just ... shit. Quinn and I were talking yesterday-”

“Oh boy,” Brittany tossed in, rolling her eyes. She knew Quinn enjoyed being a contrarian sometimes.

“Well, he brought up a good point, and you know exactly the topic I’m talking about. The one we’ve avoided since we got together.”

She knew exactly the topic he was referring to. Both of them had danced around the topic of colleges and what would happen after graduation. They rarely spoke of their plans beyond the next assignment, the next few lessons, or the next party at Linda’s. Brittany had gotten early acceptances to most of her choices, several with additional financial support options. Despite her parents pushing, she hadn’t accepted any offers yet. Being a girl in the STEM field meant extra hardships but extra opportunities as well. She wanted to know all her options before committing.

“I know,” Brittany replied. “You’re right, I don’t want to face that conversation right now, or ever, if I’m honest with myself.”

“We’re going to have to sooner or later. I hate it, believe me. I’m going to lose out big time.”

Brittany squeezed his hand, “What do you mean?”

Warren chuckled, “Britt, you can have any guy you want. You’ll get to wherever you’re going and have guys lining up around the block to buy you drinks. Me, I’m never going to top you, even if I had a billion dollars.”

She shook her head in disbelief. “You’re so stupid, Warren. Do you really think I want a bunch of frat bros buying me shots or inviting me to their kegger? I lived near to that life before, and I don’t want anything to do with it. I was miserable most of the time, trying to balance school and all the socializing I had to do. And where did that get me? I’d be happy with a few close friends and a boyfriend who understands me. I don’t want anyone else but you.”

“Then how will we make this work?”

“I don’t know, but we’ll figure it out.” The warning bell rang signaling five minutes to get to class. Brittany pulled on his hand. “Let’s go, we can talk this out later, but we will have that conversation.”

The nine members of the group gathered at lunch in Linda’s classroom. Each knew this would be a heated discussion, so they all arrived early with lunch in hand. As Linda shut the door, there was an uneasiness in the air. The outcome could spell the end of their group forever. Linda took her place at the front of the class, and all eyes were on her.

Linda herself had a rough night. Visions of Willa naked and at the mercy of a room full of horny teen boys kept her awake all night. She was worried after the snowstorm, and the effects of Heat wore off that weekend, how they would handle all this. But this was a whole other thing. First, everyone that first night were seniors, mature enough to make their own decisions. They were also smart enough to know to keep their mouths shut, which was a benefit to all of them. Now with this, there are too many people who know; too many voices to keep quiet. She didn’t want to see another life haunted by the past. She knew that feeling all too well.

“First off, any word from Willa?” Linda asked openly to the group, but Karla was the main recipient.

Karla raised her hand. “No, she didn’t come to school today. I don’t know if that’s her hoping things die down, or she didn’t want to be around as word spread. I just don’t know.”

“I can talk to my sister, find out if she’s heard anything?” Miguel volunteered. “She didn’t seem too upset when I drove her home yesterday, though.”

Maggie stood up. “Heat has a lingering effect that boosts euphoria and numbs pain receptors for several hours after the initial effects wear off. They likely wore off overnight.”

“Short answer,” Darius clarified, “ ... she sobered up and realized what she did.”

“Miguel, text Gabriela, find out if she’s heard from Willa,” Linda said, maintaining control of the situation. “Maybe get her number, too, if you can.”

“I can get it in a few minutes ... should be easy,” Andrea volunteered.

“I know,” replied Linda. “The girl’s already freaked out enough. Get it ready, but we’ll try to get it first through standard channels.”

“Fair enough. I’ll have it ready if needed.” Andrea’s face disappeared behind her keyboard.

“Actually, what’s the chatter online? Anything really bad?” Linda asked the frizzy-haired tech wizard.

Andrea’s head popped back up. “Beyond the stupid stories and rumors flying around the halls, nothing too bad. Her name is out there though, not much can be done to squash it.”

“Gossip in the halls is pretty wild and a lot of it is far-fetched,” Karla added. She knew very well how gossip worked at the school. “Unfortunately, there are enough people saying it, that people believe there’s a kernel of truth to it. That’ll stick for a while, at least.”

Linda turned to Darius. “Yesterday, you said someone was recording it? Any chance you know who it was so that it doesn’t get out?”

“Yeah, his name’s Donny Wilcox. He’s on the JV basketball team. I talked to him again this morning, actually. Told him someone drugged Willa and she had no control over what she was doing. He understood and won’t leak it. He’s a good kid. I trust him.”

Linda shook her head. “Even so, I don’t want that hanging over Willa’s head, holding onto Donny’s good graces. Andrea, get in there and do your thing. Corrupt it and kill it, permanently.”

“I don’t think that’s necessary,” Darius protested.

“You aren’t a girl, Darius. This kind of thing can ruin lives, believe me, I’ve seen it. Right now, it’s just a story, like half the nonsense that floats around the halls here. Video or pictures make it real and indisputable.”
