Chapter 9

Sohwa sent for her before the morning’s second bell.

Not the formal receiving room. The private inner chamber, no attendants, door closed. Haewon read the register immediately — this was not a managed conversation. This was her sister.

Sohwa was standing at the window when she entered. She turned and looked at Haewon with the expression she had seen only twice before — the full unmanaged face, the court surface entirely down. Something had happened. Something that had stripped the careful composure away before Sohwa had time to reconstruct it.

“Sit,” Sohwa said.

Haewon sat.

Sohwa remained standing. She spoke without preamble, without the careful framing she used for difficult information. Just the plain shape of it, delivered the way Haewon delivered things that mattered — flat and precise and without looking away.

Cui Jinglong had requested a formal audience that morning. She had granted it. He had come with documentation — details about their family in Gaeseong, specifics about Sohwa’s background that would complicate the empress elevation if presented to the right ears. He had laid it out carefully, in the language of a man who was not quite threatening and not quite stating a price but making both things entirely clear.

His price was Haewon.

A formal marriage alliance. Haewon contracted to a man within his faction. The empress’s family connected to his network. His silence and his faction’s support for the elevation in exchange.

Sohwa delivered all of it without her voice changing. When she finished the room was completely silent.

Haewon sat with it. She felt it arrive in her body the way a physical blow arrived — the moment before the pain when you simply registered the impact. Not surprise. She had known something like this was building. Jebe Temür had told her patience looked like this when it finally moved. But hearing it stated plainly was different from knowing its shape.

She looked at her sister standing at the window with her hands folded and her face stripped of everything the court had given her and felt the full weight of what it had cost Sohwa to tell her this directly instead of managing it. This was love. Naked and uncalculated and at considerable personal cost.

“He won’t get what he came for,” Haewon said.

Sohwa looked at her. “He has documentation that —”

“He won’t get what he came for,” Haewon said again. “Listen to me.”

Something in her voice made Sohwa go still. She looked at her sister — really looked, the way she had looked at her in the receiving room on the first day, trying to read what was underneath the surface.

“I have seven women,” Haewon said.

Sohwa said nothing. Waiting.

“Seven women currently serving in this court or previously removed from it. I have their accounts — specific, consistent, detailed. Dates, locations, the exact language he used, the exact threats he made about the laundry depot.” She held her sister’s gaze. “Chaewon was transferred to the laundry three months ago for refusing him. That transfer is documented in his own office’s records.” She paused. “Jebe Temür found the records. He’s been watching Cui Jinglong for years. He has documentation from the tributary office that corroborates everything the women said.”

Sohwa had not moved. Had not changed her expression. But something was happening behind her eyes — rapid, precise, the political intelligence and the raw feeling running together at full speed.

“Seven women,” she said carefully.

“Seven. All willing to speak. Chaewon especially. She has been in that laundry for three months waiting for someone to ask.”

“And Jebe Temür has the records.”

“He can present them to the emperor directly. His word carries weight that mine doesn’t. His confirmation makes the case unarguable.”
