Chapter 12
BOOM!!!
Everyone, including Zack Stone, was instantly shocked. They stared at Damon Stone, utterly dumbfounded. In their wildest dreams, they could not believe that Damon Stone had actually told Zack to apologize to this piece of trash.
Ethan was amused. He had thought Damon was going to stand up for these scumbags, but unexpectedly, the man was demanding they apologize to him instead. Of course, Ethan knew this wasn’t out of a sense of justice. It was because Damon Stone was almost certain he was Serena’s husband. After all, he operated on a level far higher than trash like Zack. It was perfectly reasonable that these lowlifes didn’t know Serena had married him.
Ethan’s guess was correct. Damon Stone had indeed heard the news that Serena Blake married a beggar. From Ethan’s clothes and appearance, he had already deduced that he was the one.
Coming to his senses, Zack was instantly furious. “Uncle, he’s the one who hit me! Why should I have to apologize to him?”
SLAP!!!
Damon Stone swung a vicious backhand slap across Zack’s head. The force of the blow sent Zack stumbling to the ground, where he landed in an embarrassing face-plant.
“You don’t do a single decent thing all day! All you know is how to throw your weight around and bully people,” Damon Stone snarled, his gaze as sharp as a knife as he scanned the other security guards. “I put you on the security team to protect this bar, not to get yourself killed!”
“And you lot,” he continued, “who gave you permission to play poker on the job? Your bonuses for this month are gone. And from this day forward, Ethan Blackthorn will be the new captain of the bar’s security team!”
BOOM.
The men were stunned once again. What on earth could have happened to make Damon Stone, a man who always protected his own, make such a decision?
Suddenly, an answer surfaced in their minds. Could it be that this beggar was really President Blake’s husband? Otherwise, why would Damon Stone possibly side with him?
At this realization, the way they looked at Ethan completely changed. The disdain on their faces was suddenly replaced by fawning obsequiousness. Ethan watched them, a cold smile playing on his lips.
Just then, the ever-serious Damon Stone offered a rare smile. “Ethan, the security team is in your hands now. Call me anytime if you need anything.”
“Sure!” Ethan replied with a grin.
As the saying goes, you don’t slap a smiling face. Besides, Ethan was more than satisfied with how Damon Stone had handled things.
Damon Stone nodded, then turned and swiftly departed. Unwilling to accept the outcome, Zack chased after him, but Ethan couldn’t be bothered with either of them.
“Uncle, is that trash really President Blake’s husband?” Zack asked, his voice thick with resentment.
“Shut up,” Damon Stone said coldly. “Keep things like that to yourself. Don’t you dare say it in front of President Blake.”
“But Uncle, you handed the security team over to that piece of trash! How are we supposed to make our extra cash now?”
“What’s the rush? He’s just a beggar. Even with the security team in his hands, do you really think he can manage it? Don’t forget, there are over twenty guards at this bar. Let him try to manage them for a while. If he does a poor job, we won’t even have to say a word. President Blake will naturally kick him out.”
A sinister smile twisted Zack’s features. “Uncle, you’re still the wisest.”
“Alright, go back to work. Just lay low for a bit. After all, President Blake wouldn’t make this beggar a security guard for no reason.”
Zack nodded and walked back into the security office, already plotting how to make things difficult for Ethan. But just as he entered, a mocking voice piped up.
“Yo, Zack! Didn’t you just say that if Captain Blackthorn turned out to be President Blake’s husband, you’d call him ‘Dad’?”
Zack froze. The speaker was one of his own lackeys, who was now looking down on him triumphantly. Not only him, but the other scumbags were also standing respectfully before Ethan. Zack’s rage boiled over. Their ability to switch allegiances so quickly was truly something else.
Just as he was about to erupt, a security guard ran in looking flustered. “Captain Stone, we have a problem!”
“Hmph, I’m not the captain anymore. The new captain is this beggar ... this Mr. Blackthorn,” Zack sneered, gesturing toward Ethan.
The guard stared, clearly stunned by the unexpected change in leadership.
Ethan asked calmly, “What’s the problem?”
“The heiress of the Harrington family, one of Silverton City’s first-tier families, is causing trouble at the entrance.”
“The Harrington family heiress? You mean Madison Harrington?”
“Y-yes, that’s her,” the guard confirmed.
Ethan grinned. A perfect opportunity had just fallen into his lap. He hadn’t forgotten the way Madison Harrington had humiliated Serena, and he had no intention of letting her off the hook just because Julian Voss had already beaten her up. The fact that he was married to Serena was thanks to her, but that didn’t change a thing.
“Lead the way. Take me to her.”
The guard nodded and hurriedly led Ethan toward the bar’s entrance. A cruel sneer spread across Zack’s face as he quickly followed. He wasn’t going to help, of course. He was just there to watch the show. Madison Harrington was no pushover. This piece of trash was about to get what was coming to him. The mere thought of Madison putting Ethan in his place sent a thrill of excitement through Zack.
At the entrance of the bar.
A luxury car was parked squarely in the driveway, completely blocking access. A line of at least six or seven other cars was stuck behind it. Inside her vehicle, Madison Harrington sat haughtily, taking slow puffs from an e-cigarette. Several security guards stood by her window, groveling as they pleaded with her to move her car. She didn’t even give them a passing glance.
Ethan walked over. “Go on, get back to work. I’ll handle this.”
The guards eyed him doubtfully.
“What are you all staring at? Didn’t you hear Captain Blackthorn?” Zack chimed in with a cold sneer.
Though even more confused, the guards quickly scattered.
“Well, well, the stinking beggar got a promotion?” Madison Harrington asked mockingly, having clearly overheard Zack.
Ethan smiled. “Yes, indeed. Thanks to you, I not only married Serena, but I also got promoted!”
Madison’s eyes flashed with venom. The topic was a sore spot for her. After forcing the beggar to marry Serena, she had been brutally beaten by Julian Voss and then harshly reprimanded by her father when she returned home. That was why she had driven to the bar and blocked the entrance. She was here to vent her anger.
“Shut your mouth! Where is that slut Serena? Tell her to get her ass out here!”
“What business do you have with my wife?” Ethan asked with a calm smile.
“Hmph. I want her to get on her knees and apologize to me.”
Ethan looked at her, his eyes glinting with amusement. “Being ugly is one thing, but must your heart be so rotten, too?”
“Fuck! You stinking beggar, you dare to insult me?”
“Insult you? Come on, drive into the parking lot. Let’s see if I dare to slap you.”
The moment the words left his mouth, Madison slammed on the accelerator and drove straight into the lot. She then got out of the car and shoved her face right in front of his.
“Go on, you stinking beggar! I dare you to hit me today! Try it!”
Her taunt had barely faded when Ethan’s hand flew, delivering a hard slap across her face. The force was so immense that it sent her crashing violently to the ground.
Watching from the side, Zack broke into a sinister grin. He’s done for now, he thought. He actually dared to hit Madison Harrington. He’s going to get destroyed.
Seething, Madison scrambled up from the ground and charged at Ethan like a wild animal, ready to tear him apart. But before she could even get close, Ethan sent her flying with a single kick. She landed hard, sprawling face-first onto the ground with a pained scream.
