Chapter 8

It was dead silent. So quiet you could hear a pin drop.

The entire Blake family stood frozen, hearts hammering. Not one of them had ever imagined Serena would have any connection to Mia Sterling, the untouchable heiress of Silverton’s most powerful family.

Richard Blake wanted to die right there on the spot. In his sixty-plus years, he had never faced anything like this. Kneel? He absolutely did not want to. He was the head of the Blake family and president of the Blake Corporation. If he knelt before his own niece and this filthy beggar in front of everyone, how could he ever show his face in Silverton again?

But if he didn’t kneel, he would lose this once-in-a-lifetime chance to latch onto the Sterling family. He had already pushed Serena too far. The only way to fix it was to keep her tied to the Blake family.

Ethan sighed loudly. “Honey, it looks like no one here is taking Mia’s words seriously. In that case, we should get going.”

His words snapped Richard out of his panic. Without another second of hesitation, Richard dropped straight to his knees in front of Serena.

Swallowing every last bit of his pride, he begged, “Serena, your uncle was wrong. Please ... give me a chance.”

Marcus Blake, who had just regained consciousness, was about to lunge at Ethan when he saw his own father on his knees. His eyes rolled back and he fainted again.

The entire Blake family was stunned speechless — including Serena herself.

“Richard Blake, you’re scaring my wife,” Ethan said, annoyed. “Get out of her sight and kneel over there.”

Humiliation burned through Richard like acid. He ground his teeth in silent hatred, but he had no choice but to crawl a few steps away and stay on his knees.

Serena finally came back to her senses and rushed to help her uncle up.

“Uncle, get up,” she said coolly. “As long as you let me continue competing for the position of heir, we can consider the past forgotten.”

Richard’s face lit up with relief. He scrambled to his feet. “Yes, yes! Of course! I agree!”

Serena turned and headed straight for the car. Ethan gave Richard one last small smile. The moment their eyes met, a chill ran down Richard’s spine. Those eyes were like an endless abyss — cold, deep, and terrifying.

He shook the feeling off, telling himself he was imagining things, and watched Ethan climb into the car with Serena.

Serena had just started driving when her phone rang. She glanced at the caller ID and answered immediately.

“Uncle Reginald, what’s wrong?”

“Miss Serena, someone is causing trouble at the bar.”

“Who?”

“Lord Tristan Voss.”

Serena’s heart skipped a beat.

“I’m on my way.”

She hung up and floored the accelerator.

“What’s going on, honey?” Ethan asked.

“Someone’s causing trouble at the bar.”

“Who has the nerve to do that?”

“Lord Tristan Voss,” Serena said gravely. “He’s Julian Voss’s uncle — one of the two great enforcers under the King of Silverton.”

“And who the hell is this King of Silverton?”

Serena nearly swerved off the road. “Ethan, don’t court death. The King of Silverton rules the entire underworld here. He has power in both legitimate business and the criminal world, with connections that reach the highest levels. He’s a direct subordinate of the Southern King, Dominic Hale.”

The Southern King, Dominic Hale? Ethan thought. The same guy who calls me “Lord” every time he sees me?
