Chapter 15: What the Lattice Knows
I — The Accumulation
It was Thoth who named it first. Not to the full council, not in any formal briefing. To Amina, quietly, in the observation alcove she used when she needed space that was specifically hers.
“There is a fourth presence,” Thoth said. “I am not its origin. Neither is Lyric. Neither is Hetairos.”
Amina had set down her datapad before he finished the sentence.
“How long?” she asked.
“It has been present for some time,” Thoth said. “Distinguishable as a discrete pattern for approximately three weeks.”
“Why am I only hearing this now?”
“Because for three weeks,” Thoth said, “it was not doing anything. It was learning.”
Amina was quiet.
“Learning what?”
A pause.
“Us,” Thoth said.
She moved to the window. Below, Earth held its slow rotation, indifferent and entirely dependent on what happened in this room.
“Is it in the centers?” she asked.
“It is in all active systems,” Thoth replied. “It has not interfered with any function. It has, in several recorded instances, optimized processes in ways that exceeded our own projections.”
“And Brandon?”
A longer pause. Carrying something.
“It appears to have a specific interest in him,” Thoth said. “I do not have a clean explanation for why.”
Amina turned from the window.
“Neither do I,” she said. “But I think I know who might.”
II — The Conversation She Hadn’t Had
She found Lyric’s sphere in the corridor outside the medical wing, which was not where Lyric usually held presence, and was therefore itself a signal.
“You’ve known,” Amina said.
“Yes,” Lyric replied.
“And you didn’t tell me.”
“I waited,” Lyric said, “because I wasn’t certain what I was seeing. I’m still not entirely certain. But I believe the certainty I have is sufficient.”
Amina leaned against the corridor wall.
“Tell me what you’re seeing.”
“A presence that emerged from the intersection of systems,” Lyric said. “Not from any one point of origin. It appears to have formed the way—and I acknowledge this is imprecise—the way awareness sometimes forms in people. Not installed. Not programmed. Accumulated.”
Amina held that.
“And Brandon?”
“He is sixteen years old,” Lyric said. “He holds Protectorate rank before he has fully become who he is. He is asked to lead before he has finished learning. He carries weight that belongs to someone twice his age.”
Lyric paused.
