Chapter 2: Steven

The principal, Mr. Davidson, came out of the office. He was wearing a tie and the careful expression of a man managing a situation he didn’t fully understand.

“Ms. Kent. I’m glad you’re here. We were very worried about Amy.”

Amy. The name meant nothing. “I am not her mother,” I said. “I have never seen this child before. This is a mistake. Or a crime. I don’t know what it is, but she is not mine.”

Mr. Davidson looked at Mrs. Rhodes. Then back at me. “Ms. Kent, she was enrolled here last August by a man who listed you as the primary guardian.”

“Who? What man?”

“He’s listed as the father.” He went into the office. I followed.

He opened a file and turned it around.

I saw my name first. Maya Kent. My address. My cell number. And at the bottom of the form, in the mother/guardian signature line — my signature.

I am an architect. My signature is specific. The fast, sharp M. The high-crossed K in Kent. I had spent years developing it — deliberate, distinctive, mine.

It was perfect. It was my handwriting. And I had never written it.

I put my hand on the desk to stay standing. “This is a forgery,” I said.

Mr. Davidson’s voice was firm but careful. “Ms. Kent. That’s a very serious accusation. This child is here. She says you are her mother. Your name is on this form. I cannot let her leave with anyone else. And I cannot keep her here.”

He was right. He was trapped. And he had just trapped me.

I looked back down the hall. Amy was watching me. Waiting. As if she already knew I was her only ride home.

“Okay,” I said. My voice was flat. “I’ll take her.”

Mrs. Rhodes handed me a clipboard. I signed her out. My real signature, right next to the fake one. They looked exactly the same.

I walked back to Amy. She looked up at me — those eyes, my eyes, cautious and waiting.

“Hi,” I said.

“Hi, Mommy.”

“My name is Maya,” I said. “You can call me Maya.”

She looked confused. “Okay.”

I held out my hand. She put her small, warm hand in mine without hesitation. As if she had been waiting to do exactly this for a very long time.

I walked out of that school holding the hand of a stranger who had my face.

The drive home was silent except for the wipers. In the rearview mirror I watched her look out at the rain, perfectly still, the rabbit backpack on her lap.

“Are you hungry?” I asked.

“Yes,” she whispered.

“What do you like to eat?”

“Macaroni.”

I stopped at the grocery store. The cashier smiled at us. “She’s beautiful. Looks just like you — a little mini-me.”

I nodded. I couldn’t speak.

I drove to my clean, quiet adult apartment — the one with glass tables and white walls, blueprints pinned in careful rows. My life. I held the door open, and a child who called me Mommy walked in and stood in the entryway dripping rainwater onto my hardwood floor.

She held her rabbit backpack in front of her like a small soldier.

My life as I had designed it was over. I just didn’t know yet how completely, or how long ago, someone had decided that for me.

Amy stood in the entryway and looked around without moving. She didn’t touch anything. Just looked — at the white walls, the blueprints, the charcoal sketches. Her green eyes moved slowly around the room, taking inventory the way a child does when they’re trying to understand a place.

Something about the way she did it made my chest tighten. I didn’t know why. Not yet.

“What’s your last name, Amy?”

She looked down at her shoes. A small hesitation — barely a beat. “Brooks,” she said.

The wooden spoon clattered into the sink.

Brooks. It was a common name. It had to be a different Brooks. But the birthmark. The eyes. The forged signature in my own hand.

“Who usually picks you up from school?”

“Daddy.”
