Chapter 8: The Rival’s Instant Humiliation
“Victor Lang, you cheating bastard! With her?! She’s not even pretty!”
Evelyn Lang — Victor’s wife, the infamous “tigress” of their social circle — roared in the middle of the luxury mall corridor.
She had been shopping with her old friends when she spotted her husband and his much-younger side piece. Before Victor or Brooke could react, Evelyn and her four furious friends swarmed them.
Fists flew. Designer bags became weapons. In under a minute both Victor and Brooke were on the ground, black and blue, Brooke’s freshly done nose job now noticeably crooked.
Security eventually pulled them apart, but the damage was done. The entire mall had filmed it.
In the Koenigsegg, Natalie Brooks tried again. “Mr. Caldwell, I really can’t accept this.”
The Patek Philippe on her wrist — the $1.58 million women’s watch — felt heavier than it should.
“When we’re alone, drop the ‘Mr. Caldwell,’” Ethan said casually, starting the engine. “You worked hard today. Keep it. It’s just a little trinket. The important thing is that you like it.”
The most important thing is that you like it.
Natalie’s cheeks flushed. Those words hit differently. She knew accepting the watch blurred the line between boss and ... something else. But how could she say no to him?
“If you ever need anything, come find me at Villa No. 6 in The Sovereign Villas at Hudson Lake.”
Natalie froze. What exactly did he mean by that?
After dropping her off, Ethan drove straight to Harbor University with the blue Patek Philippe watch for Ava. Price tag? He hadn’t even noticed. To him it was pocket change.
“Wow, Brother Ethan, how long has it been since you last gave me a gift?!”
Ava Kensington lit up like Christmas morning the second she opened the box. She had no idea it was a Patek Philippe — she just knew it was from Ethan, and that was enough.
He still cares, she thought, already plotting how to keep every other girl away from him.
Ethan had parked the Koenigsegg outside campus to avoid too much attention, but his face alone still caused a riot. A group of bold, gorgeous girls immediately swarmed him asking for his number. Ava chased them off like a jealous guard dog.
Later that evening, back in her dorm, Ava was still admiring the watch when Ellie Thompson (the bubbly, slightly chubby roommate) gasped.
“Ling— I mean, Ava! You got a gift too?!”
Their dorm had four girls. Chloe was out streaming, leaving Ellie, Jasmine Hayes (the pretty one), and Ava.
Jasmine proudly opened her own gift. “My boyfriend planned this for weeks.”
“HERMÈS!” Ellie squealed, eyes wide. “Look at the tag — $35,000!”
Girls from the hallway poured in, gasping and envying the rare Hermès Arceau watch. Jasmine glowed under the attention.
“By the way, Ava,” Jasmine said sweetly, “what did your boyfriend get you?”
The rivalry was instant. Jasmine couldn’t beat Ava in looks, but surely her $35k Hermès would win.
Ava shrugged. “Ethan gave me something small. Nothing special.”
“Come on, show us!” the girls begged. “Maybe it’s even better than Hermès?”
Jasmine smirked. Impossible.
Ava finally gave in and opened the box.
“Wow ... another watch. It’s gorgeous.”
“Way prettier than Jasmine’s.”
Jasmine leaned in, then frowned. She didn’t recognize the brand.
“Some no-name brand compared to real Hermès?” one of Jasmine’s friends sneered.
A girl in the back suddenly shouted after checking her phone. “That’s ... that’s Patek Philippe! The real Patek Philippe!”
Phones came out. Searches confirmed it.
The room went silent, then exploded.
“Oh my God!”
“How is this possible?!”
Ava flipped the tag: $743,500.
“Seven hundred and forty-three thousand dollars?!” someone whispered.
The entire dorm stared at the watch like it was a sacred artifact. Compared to Jasmine’s $35k Hermès, it was laughable.
Jasmine’s face turned ghostly white. She had just been completely humiliated.
Ava herself was stunned when she saw the receipt. Ethan had casually dropped three-quarters of a million on her like it was nothing.
The next morning Bella Harrington texted Ethan:
“Ethan, meet at 9. I’ll pick you up.”
A few days earlier she had invited him for a day at The Horizon Lake Resort. He had agreed.
