Chapter 14: The Doctor Who Wanted Payment — And The Tycoon Who Owned The Hospital
It was Saturday. At noon, Ethan’s beautiful next-door neighbor, Victoria Lang, came over to his villa to look after Baby, the Ragdoll cat.
“Look, Baby is turning into a total fluff ball,” Ethan couldn’t help saying as he watched the cat’s horizontal growth.
“Fat?” Victoria tilted her head. “I think Baby is still very skinny. Eat more, Baby.”
As she spoke, she fed Baby some premium fish snacks.
Ethan felt a bit exasperated.
At this moment, his phone rang. It was his mom.
“Ethan, what’s with the fifty thousand dollars you sent?”
As soon as he answered, his mother’s voice came through.
“Mom, I got lucky in the stock market and made some money,” Ethan replied.
He obviously couldn’t tell her the truth, so he used a simple excuse. His mom didn’t really understand the stock market — she just knew it was risky and treated it like buying lottery tickets.
Since gaining the System, Ethan had used his connections to arrange relaxed, well-paying jobs for his parents. While he could easily give them millions and make their lives extremely luxurious, he knew his honest parents would worry themselves sick if such a huge sum appeared out of nowhere with no explanation.
It was better to let them live comfortably with stable jobs.
“Alright then. Mom knows you’re doing well,” his mother said comfortingly.
“By the way, your Aunt Linda introduced you to another girl here in the city. They say she’s gentle and very pretty.”
His mom added at the end.
“So, how about another blind date?”
Ethan felt even more exasperated. The last one Aunt Linda arranged was an experience he never wanted to repeat.
“Mom, I don’t want to go,” he said firmly.
“Ethan, just go one more time. The last time, I promise.”
His mom wasn’t ready to give up — she was eager for grandchildren, after all.
Ethan was momentarily at a loss for words.
“Mom, I’ll be honest with you. I actually have a girlfriend,” he finally said, resorting to a white lie to avoid another setup.
“What?”
On the other end of the phone, his mom was utterly shocked.
Inside the villa, Victoria, who had been playing with Baby, felt a strange pang of disappointment.
He had a girlfriend?
How come she didn’t know?
“Who is she? What’s her personality like? Where is she from? What does her family do?” His mom fired off a barrage of questions.
“Um...”
Ethan thought for a moment, then inspiration struck.
“She’s a top-tier rich and beautiful woman. She’s currently the CEO managing a multi-billion-dollar company. I actually learned my stock trading skills from her,” Ethan answered smoothly.
He realized this was the perfect opportunity. This way, he could reasonably explain where his money was coming from.
So he fabricated this girlfriend. The billion-dollar company was, of course, his own Vanguard Dynamics.
He even had a backup plan: if his mom asked him to bring her home, he could ask his beautiful secretary, Natalie Brooks, to pretend to be his girlfriend. She had the perfect poise and presence of a female CEO.
Besides, Ethan believed Natalie wouldn’t refuse — after all, he was her boss.
Nearby, after hearing Ethan’s words, Victoria was stunned. She completely misunderstood.
Rich and beautiful woman?
Billion-dollar company?
CEO?
Wasn’t that her?
Ethan told his mom she was his girlfriend?
In an instant, Victoria felt nervous. Her face flushed slightly, and her heartbeat quickened.
If someone else had said this, she would have been angry. But since it was Ethan, not only was she not mad — she felt a little excited.
What did Ethan mean by this?
Was he using this opportunity to confess to her in a roundabout way?
Thinking this, Victoria became even more nervous.
If it was true, should she agree?
Should she say yes the moment he hung up the phone, or think about it for a while?
Could Ethan be hinting at her, hoping she would make the first move?
If so, he must be interested but too shy to say it directly.
Victoria got lost in her thoughts.
“Sounds great, but why would a rich, beautiful female CEO be interested in you?” his mom asked, puzzled.
“Because your son is handsome, of course,” Ethan shrugged.
Victoria secretly glanced at him.
Handsome ... Ethan really had become more and more attractive, and he carried an indescribable aura, much like the top tycoons she had met before.
“Alright.”
His mom still sounded deeply doubtful.
“Here’s the deal: find a chance soon to bring the girl home so your dad and I can meet her and give you some advice.”
“Also, let those relatives see that my son has done well — landing a rich and beautiful girlfriend.”
His mom said, still unconvinced.
“Okay.”
His mom doubting his charm made Ethan quite unhappy.
Finally, his mom reminded him several times to take care of himself before hanging up.
The moment the call ended, Ethan saw Victoria walking toward him with a strange expression.
“What’s up with you?” Ethan asked, puzzled. She had seemed fine earlier.
“You should drink more warm water and get some rest,” he kindly reminded her.
“Mmm.”
Hearing the “drink more warm water” line, Victoria wasn’t annoyed at all. Instead, she felt a bit excited. Ethan was showing concern for her.
When a handsome guy tells you to drink warm water, it’s not dull — it’s considerate!
“Ethan ... I haven’t made up my mind yet. Let me think about it,” Victoria whispered, then quickly left.
Watching Victoria “escape,” Ethan stood there dumbfounded.
What was going on?
He really didn’t understand the minds of women.
Just then, Ethan received a call from Logan Hale.
“What? I’m on my way.”
Ethan nodded and immediately drove the Koenigsegg to the hospital.
It turned out Logan’s father had been in a serious car accident the night before. Because the medical facilities back home were limited, he had been rushed to the city — to Elysian Hospital in Manhattan.
