Chapter 91: Ashes Across the Throne Room

Night fell over the inn.

Arya had not slept in a real bed for quite some time during the journey, so after supper her eyelids quickly began to droop. Before long, she was fully asleep.

Lannor removed his armor and sword and set them aside. He stared at the bedboards with visible reluctance before finally sighing and lying down anyway.

For him now, sleep was less rest than another form of brutal training.

“Hopefully I haul up something worthwhile this time.”

The witcher lay flat on the inn bed and rubbed both hands hard across his face.

“Right. Let’s begin, Mentos.”

The voice of the Intelligence Core answered inside his mind.

System Notification: Memory Leakage Event Status: Initiated Current Intensity: Level 1 The slit pupils inside those cat eyes contracted instantly.

Darkness swallowed his vision first.

Then light erupted.

Stars were dying.

The core of an entire planet split apart before his eyes beneath the strike of a Cyclonic Torpedo. Magma buried beneath the crust surged outward alongside the ruptured planetary core. Violent reactions forced matter itself into higher electronic states, and the resulting flash blazed brighter than a sun.

But the owner of this memory had no time to care about such trivialities.

Inside the helmet integrated with an Astartes Combat Interface, measured breathing rolled deep and steady, the product of endless training.

Everywhere he looked, blood flooded the steel corridors of the ship deeply enough to drown a normal man’s ankles.

Perhaps the drainage systems had been destroyed.

Perhaps shattered flesh and broken organs had clogged them shut.

The enemy was familiar from earlier memories.

Green bodies swollen with muscle. Ape-like jaws thrusting forward beneath enormous tusks.

Orcs.

A species of lunatics who could lose half their brain and still laugh.

This memory differed from the previous ones.

There were no absurdly oversized guns or monstrous melee weapons in his hands this time. Instead, he carried only a pistol, though even that sidearm was longer than a normal man’s forearm.

Still, after personally experiencing the recoil and violence of bolt weapons several times through memory immersion, Lannor instinctively felt this thing lacked proper force.

Though aesthetically, it looked far more refined than a bolter.

In his other hand sat something resembling a drill.

Lannor doubted it was a weapon.

Compared to the style of the other armaments in these memories, it looked almost delicate.

“The Orc assault is weakening. They’re preparing the next wave. Declan, recover the Gene Seed while you still can. Move!”

Orders rang calmly through the helmet vox.

The owner of the memory answered crisply.

“Yes.”

Inside the steel corridors, the ammunition discharged every second would have weighed hundreds of kilograms if measured by mass.

Yet even this counted as a “weakened assault” in the eyes of both the memory’s owner and his commander.

Amid storms of gunfire, the armored giant began moving through the corridor with impossible elegance.

The sensation was bizarre.

You could clearly feel the body itself was a heavily armored mass weighing nearly two tons, yet under the control of this memory’s owner, those movements felt feather-light.

Moments earlier, the shockwave from a passing bolt round had literally blown him off his feet.

A mortal could spend a lifetime chasing such mastery of balance and footwork and never even approach it.

But by now, Lannor no longer felt shocked.

He was diligent. Since implanting the Gene Seed, he had spent every day swimming through this chaotic ocean of memories spanning ten thousand years.

Every single owner of these memories was terrifyingly skilled.

He had already seen swordsmen manipulate bolt detonators through pure bladework, then send the rounds flying back toward their shooters.

Gods damn it, those things were basically miniature missiles.

Of course, the practical gains remained limited.

The combat arts contained in these memories stood too high, too refined. Lannor could not even brute-force them into memory.
