Chapter 90: The Wolf Entered Velen
Lannor was mildly surprised.
He had assumed this journey would be simple enough. Find the royal advisors, get the information.
Figure out where to go and who to kill, then carry a sword there and finish the matter.
But now it seemed ... This affair was far larger than he had imagined.
Gods damn it. Why did every road lead straight into disaster?
Made him feel like some walking omen.
Though saying that was one thing. Asking Lannor to turn his back on it entirely was impossible.
Back in Velen, he had stormed an armed camp just to save people. Now that Gene Seed had been implanted into his body, failure had become even harder for him to stomach.
Nothing worth doing came easy. Problems that could be solved by charging in with a sword and slaughtering everything were rare.
“Looks like urgency alone won’t solve this.”
Lannor spread his hands and rose from the chair.
“Then we start digging.”
Triss stood immediately after him, blue eyes fixed tightly on the witcher.
“We’ll help you. This isn’t only Aretuza’s commission anymore. It concerns whether we can still keep our footing in Vizima.”
The two of them had become Vizima’s royal advisors through ancient agreements between sorcerer organizations and kings.
Yet it had taken a witcher barging into the matter for them to realize the city they thought was secure was, in truth, a pit of snakes.
If they still lacked a sense of crisis after this, then they had no business occupying the position of royal advisor.
Sooner or later, someone would remove them anyway.
Lannor nodded to her. The red-haired beauty answered with a faint smile.
“I’ll find an inn and settle there for now. If anything comes up, we can contact each other through the crystal.”
Keira abruptly stood as well.
The flush on her face, whether from wine or something else entirely, had deepened further.
“An inn? That’s terribly inconvenient. Why not stay in my laboratory? I have a spare room in the palace. There’s a bed there, large and soft enough to...”
“No. An inn is exactly where you should stay.”
Blushing herself, Triss slapped aside the hand Keira tried to slide toward Lannor.
“Our residences are definitely being watched right now. Lannor came here quietly from beginning to end. That makes him an excellent hidden card, and we shouldn’t expose him.”
Then she turned and gave Lannor an address with a smile.
“The service there is excellent. It’s in the Trade Quarter, very safe, close to the palace too. Violence in that district has been practically unheard of for years.”
“Much appreciated. I’ll head there now.”
Under the regretful gazes of both women, Lannor pulled his hood back up.
It concealed the silver-and-black hair and the amber cat eyes beneath.
Triss left a rather good impression on him, but Keira’s attitude was a little too much like she wanted to devour him whole.
He honestly did not know how to handle that.
Throughout the entire conversation, Arya had worn the same confused expression from start to finish. Now Lannor simply grabbed her hand and led her downstairs.
Which, honestly, was the normal reaction for someone of this era. In fact, hers already counted as unusually perceptive.
Peasants who had never received an education could spend entire lifetimes surviving hardship and storms, yet hearing this sort of discussion would still sound to them like drunken nonsense not worth listening to.
Education had always been expensive.
Even the daughter of the Lord of Winterfell was unlikely to be taught matters this deep.
Though by Lannor’s standards, the “depth” here was still fairly shallow.
Upstairs, the ladies opened another portal amid loud, shameless laughter and teasing.
To be honest, the witcher’s ears had gone a little warm, so he deliberately ignored it.
The Roaring Bear Head Necklace trembled once more against his chest before falling still.
He stepped outside, untied Pope, and the pair set off once more toward the inn Triss had recommended.
As they moved from the Temple District toward the Trade Quarter, guards stationed at crossroads eyed him warily.
But none stepped forward to question him.
