Chapter 89: Fire Consumed The Docks
Would I interfere with a sorceress casting spells?
Watching the two sorceresses across from him, Lannor could not help forming the thought.
“No idea about spellcasting, but I do think that if you nodded your head right now, Keira Metz would tear off her belt and throw you onto that chair without hesitation.”
Mentos, still buried in overtime work building interception algorithms, took a moment to deliver that comment.
Then Lannor shoved the Intelligence Core straight back into the mines.
Compared to the openly hungry Keira, Triss, who had personally experienced the disturbance in Lannor’s power, appeared far more composed.
Though that probably also had something to do with Keira Metz simply being that uninhibited to begin with.
“Regardless, ladies, let’s calm down first.”
Lannor settled deeper into the wool-lined chair and stretched lazily. Sorceresses truly did know how to live, that much could not be denied.
“I’m the debt collector hired by Aretuza, and the two of you are part of Aretuza’s network.”
“Let’s skip the nonsense and get to the point. Better to wrap this business up quickly.”
“Oh! Right, business!”
Triss discreetly tugged Keira’s neckline closed a little more and nodded repeatedly.
“The slave trade happening inside Temeria is absolutely intolerable!”
Lannor thought, I can’t tolerate it either.
What kind of normal person could look at slave trading and shrug? Human beings packed, transported, broken and trained like livestock, anyone seeing that would have their blood pressure shoot through the roof.
But I came here for information.
Yet under Lannor’s questioning gaze, the two women, both high-ranking mages, finally dragged their attention away from that damned handsome face.
Both frowned and slowly shook their heads.
“To be honest ... we found nothing.”
Keira Metz, the sorceress whose clothes and manner both screamed seduction, spoke softly.
But beneath the annoyance of failing Aretuza’s request, another emotion sat heavier still.
Frustration.
Lannor sorted through what he knew about her in the span of a blink.
Among the sorceresses Aretuza had stationed in Vizima as royal advisors, both Triss and Keira were deeply involved in politics.
But unlike Triss, who genuinely cared about the kingdom’s future and worried about the effect politics had on the state, Keira’s enthusiasm came from the pleasure power itself brought her.
Meaning this woman possessed an exceptionally strong hunger for authority.
Without showing it outwardly, Lannor spoke calmly.
“Then the other side’s preparations surpassed even your expectations.”
What kind of situation left someone with strong political ambitions, someone who already held considerable influence, feeling this bitter?
Only one.
She had discovered a place her power could not reach.
Keira’s grip tightened hard enough against the chair arm to whiten her knuckles, all interest in Lannor’s body temporarily forgotten.
Triss’s expression darkened as well.
Half her weight pressed into the armrest as she leaned forward seriously.
“Lannor, I don’t know what sort of education you received. Witchers are mysterious. Before today, most of us thought you were little more than isolated savages living beyond civilization. But the way you adapted to Telepathy earlier, that kind of fluency means that even among sorcerers, you’d be considered highly intelligent.”
“Go on.”
Lannor leaned back, fingers interlocked over his stomach in a listening posture.
“I may not have much formal schooling, but I understand a few principles here and there.”
The thumb and forefinger of his studded glove pinched together slightly to demonstrate just how little.
Triss pressed her lips together, carefully choosing her next words as though trying to lower the threshold for understanding.
