Chapter 88: The Smiling Executioner

The glow inside the Alchemy Sack faded into nothingness.

Lannor showed no outward reaction at all as he led Pope toward the address he had been given.

Behind him, Arya twisted about in the saddle, eyes darting everywhere with unconcealed curiosity.

“Wow! There are so many people here! My lord, is this the largest city in the world?”

The little girl’s voice bounced with excitement.

Lannor, however, knew fuck all about it.

Including Vizima, he had visited exactly two cities in this world.

But since someone was already calling him “my lord,” and since some strange instinct in him refused to lose face, he answered in the tone of a man who knew exactly what he was talking about.

“This isn’t especially large. The truly great city is a coastal port, the capital of the world, Novigrad. That’s where the real crowds are.”

Though from conversations with Philippa, Margarita, and the others, he knew this so-called “capital of the world” only held twenty or thirty thousand permanent residents.

Perhaps sixty or seventy thousand in total.

Back in his old world, that barely qualified as a town beneath a county city.

But here, it was colossal.

Arya gasped at the proper moment.

“A single city can hold that many people?”

Lannor raised a brow. Apparently the civilization level in Arya’s world was not especially high either.

“Didn’t you say you were heading to your king’s capital? What, is your capital worse than Vizima?”

Arya shifted restlessly in the saddle, trying all sorts of motions while speaking carelessly.

“We were still on the road. I only remember Winterfell back home. You’d never see this many people there.”

Lannor nodded in understanding.

Winterfell. Sounded cold already.

“We’re here.”

After winding through a maze of illegally added structures and narrow alleys, Lannor stopped before an unremarkable two-story building.

Thanks to his size and the heavy outline of his armor, plenty of hostile eyes had followed him on the way over, but no one had dared approach.

He lifted Arya down from the saddle and casually patted Pope’s muzzle.

A horse that large squeezing through those twisting alleys had not been easy on her either.

His studded glove rose toward the wooden door, about to knock, then stopped abruptly.

Lannor lowered his gaze.

A few grains of dust near the crack beneath the door drifted inward, as though drawn by a breeze.

The Roaring Bear Head Necklace on his chest suddenly vibrated once, then fell still.

“A portal opened, but there was no atmospheric distortion sound ... additional soundproofing magic.”

Information gathered. Analysis completed in an instant.

Lannor’s expression sharpened slightly.

Two royal sorceress advisors maintaining a hidden teleport point in the slums to this degree...

So this really was a palace intrigue drama.

“Figures. Can’t expect a kingdom’s capital to lack tangled power struggles.”

Still, he had not come here to involve himself in any of that.

He was only here to collect a debt.

The shabby wooden door opened inward, revealing a beauty utterly unsuited to the miserable building around her.

Her hair sat somewhere between chestnut and wine-red, vivid blue eyes set into a delicate face. She wore tight leather suited for movement, outlining a figure less overwhelming than Margarita’s, but longer, leaner, more elegant.

Like a cautious doe, she poked her head through the crack and glanced carefully both ways down the alley.

Lannor looked down at her calmly.
