Chapter 84: Chains Dragged Across Stone
Gaunter O’Dimm stepped into the room with the ease of a man returning home, found himself a stool, and sat down. Lannor immediately took the seat opposite him.
“First things first.” The witcher jerked a thumb toward the little girl behind him, still stuffing herself with food, then raised a brow at Gaunter O’Dimm. “She’ll be fine after eating like that, yes?”
“Of course, of course. I would never mistreat a noble young lady.”
For some reason, sitting calmly across from a being capable of altering reality, or at least reality within a certain range, while speaking first about his servant instead of his own danger, seemed to amuse Gaunter O’Dimm even more.
“Good.” Lannor leaned forward, elbows braced on his knees. “Then let the child eat. As for us, let’s discuss why you came looking for me.”
Those cat eyes stared directly into the man’s pitch-black pupils without the slightest attempt to hide their scrutiny.
Silence stretched between them. Gaunter O’Dimm merely smiled. Said nothing.
Then Lannor seemed to arrive at some conclusion of his own.
“Right. I understand now.”
The witcher lightly tapped the tender pink flesh newly grown across his chest. “You came because of this, didn’t you? But why wait until after I installed it? I carried that Gene Seed through the Velen wilderness for months. A thing like you doesn’t strike me as something that could simply ‘fail to find’ me.”
He tilted his head with genuine curiosity. “Or what? Does ripping it out of a slick living chest amuse you more than taking it from a jar?”
He spoke of the flesh inside his own body as casually as if discussing a cut of pork.
“No, no, no!”
Gaunter O’Dimm hurriedly denied it, looking oddly like a guilty degenerate protesting his innocence. “You cannot compare me to those tasteless creatures obsessed with blood and gore! I am a respectable businessman!”
“And besides, what amusement is there in a lump of flesh sitting motionless in a bottle? It needs a host. It needs to move. Only then does it become interesting.”
Lannor nodded in understanding. “Business ... I see. So you hoped to earn something from me.”
“But that still leaves the same question. With your ... talents, why bother making deals at all?”
A man capable of rewriting reality should have found ruling the world laughably easy.
Gaunter O’Dimm caught the implication immediately. He slapped his knees and doubled over laughing on the stool.
“Oh, my friend, you think I’ve never done that before? How many times do you imagine I’ve done it?”
“Boring! After enough repetitions, that sort of thing becomes unbearably dull!”
“That is why, even though I noticed the remarkable thing you carried from the very first day you arrived, even though I realized you yourself are quite a remarkable thing, I still refused to interfere.”
“Now I prefer to let matters unfold naturally. I simply wait at the inevitable ending ... and when you finally see the expressions on those people’s faces as they meet me, only then will you understand how entertaining it truly is.”
“In simpler terms...” Lannor raised a brow. “You enjoy playing games.”
“What else is there to do?” The bald man spread his hands with a grin. “At this moment, three creatures from beyond this world are gathered in one room. Isn’t that delightful?”
“But honestly, are creatures from other worlds brought by the Conjunction of the Spheres really so rare? Drowners and Nekkers are from elsewhere too, no more noteworthy than rats.”
He leaned slightly closer.
“You are the interesting one, Lannor.”
The witcher said nothing. Merely watched him.
