Chapter 185: Blood Measured by Mentos
Like a hurricane tearing through a field.
Even with Lannor’s enhanced perception, the movement nearly made him dizzy.
In a single instant, the container holding the Secondary Heart was set safely upon the operating table, while the surgeon’s massive purple-armored hand slammed down onto his assistant’s helmet.
The fully enclosed war helm crashed through surgical instruments and equipment alike. Metal clattered across the room in a storm of ringing impacts.
Then came a deafening boom.
The assistant’s head struck the steel wall.
The impact was so violent that the helmet was driven several centimeters into the reinforced surface itself.
Steel gauntlet ground against steel helm, shrieking with the sound of metal straining against metal.
The surgeon was so furious he could barely maintain the elegant cadence of his speech.
“You dared tamper with a Secondary Heart! You dared tamper with the second heart of a future brother! Just to flaunt your pathetic Genetic Augmentation experiments! Diluc, you filth of the Legion!”
As the roar echoed through the chamber, knowledge surfaced naturally from the surgeon’s memory.
Lannor instantly understood what a proper Secondary Heart should look like.
And because Diluc’s modifications had been exceptionally subtle, the surgeon’s mind automatically traced the discrepancy backward through every stage of production.
The entire manufacturing process unfolded before Lannor’s eyes.
Record it. Record all of it.
He immediately ordered Mentos to store everything in the database.
The surgeon’s outrage was overwhelming.
Diluc was an Emperor’s Children.
How could he do this?
How could he dare?
“You think I can’t detect cellular-level modifications to myocardial fibers? The surgical procedures of the Space Marines were established by the Emperor Himself! You believe your reckless fantasies surpass the wisdom of Holy Terra?”
The grip tightened.
“Who do you think you are?!”
The title the Emperor caught Lannor’s attention.
His gene-seed originated from the Emperor’s Children.
If so, this Emperor was likely their creator. Their supreme ruler.
Throughout the steel chamber, crimson warning lights began flashing.
The automated systems had detected violence.
A Space Marine implantation procedure was significant enough to draw the attention of an entire warship.
Lannor could feel it clearly.
The owner of this memory was stronger than any he had witnessed before.
More knowledgeable.
More refined.
During that single movement, Diluc had displayed physical and cognitive abilities that matched, perhaps even exceeded, the average Emperor’s Children warrior from earlier memories.
His reaction speed alone was extraordinary.
The moment he was seized, he had already generated thirteen separate countermeasures.
Every one of them failed.
Not because they were crushed by brute force.
That would have offended the aesthetics of the Emperor’s Children.
No.
The surgeon dismantled all thirteen responses instinctively, each counter answered with the perfect technique.
Every movement flowed into the next.
Perfect attack.
Perfect defense.
Perfect control.
Yet what unsettled Lannor most was not the overwhelming disparity.
It was Diluc’s reaction.
Something was wrong.
Terribly wrong.
The man was enjoying it.
The pain seemed to delight him.
His body twitched involuntarily. Muscles spasmed with pleasure rather than agony.
The surgeon visibly recoiled.
Disgust surged through him.
He abruptly released Diluc’s helmet as though touching something foul.
“You are coming before the Captain, Diluc.”
Turning away, he strode back to the operating table and manipulated several controls across the display.
A temporary stasis field shimmered into existence around the patient.
“Of course. Of course.” Diluc pulled himself free from the dented wall, chuckling softly.
