Chapter 175: The Marsh Refused the Dead

Leading the horse by its reins, Lannor stepped into the Conjunction of the Spheres Rift, the fractured opening shimmering like shattered glass.

Even with blinders fitted over the beast’s eyes, the Chaos magic still unsettled the packhorse. It snorted repeatedly, hooves scraping uneasily against the ground.

Left with no other choice, Lannor grabbed one of its ears and dragged it forward.

“Get used to it, mate.”

Without the horse, hauling ten thousand Golden Dragons and a dragon bone all by himself would have been a miserable ordeal.

After passing through several paces of warped, dreamlike passageway, Lannor emerged once more into the world saturated with Chaos magic, bringing the spoils of another realm back with him.

“Splash...”

The moment his eyes adjusted, the sensation beneath his boots told him where he was.

He had returned to Daggon’s temple.

The marble floor, partially submerged beneath the lake’s surface, still held drifting lotus flowers and broad leaves upon the quiet water.

Sunlight from Lake Vizima streamed between the marble pillars, scattering silver ripples across the surface. The lake itself remained calm and undisturbed.

Only moments ago, he had been standing knee-deep in the mud and marsh stink of the Neck, searching for traces of the rift.

Now his lungs filled with the clear, fresh scent of lakewater.

Lannor knew perfectly well that ordinary lakes did not smell like this.

So he released the horse’s ear, turned gracefully, and bowed.

The elaborate etiquette of noble courts came to him with effortless precision, every movement refined and elegant.

“Good day, milady.”

Ripples spread across the water.

A graceful green finger rose into view and hooked beneath the young witcher’s chin.

His head tilted upward.

A smooth green body, naked and impossibly alluring, emerged before him, curves gleaming softly in the lake-light.

“Welcome home, my champion.”

Lannor blinked several times and instinctively leaned backward a little.

This time, the Lady was standing ... somewhat too close. If he did not retreat, her rather formidable “frontal armor” would likely end up pressed straight against his face.

The Lady of the Lake merely smiled at his obvious attempt to lean away.

Then she casually drew Arondight from behind his back.

Like someone reading a scroll, her fingers slowly slid along the blade inch by inch.

As she did, her smile deepened.

“My sword tells me I chose correctly, Lannor.”

“It seems I may now discuss the next matter with you.”

She returned Arondight to his hand. Lannor frowned slightly, confusion flickering across his face.

“The next matter? Milady, I don’t understand.”

Everything had begun with Daggon invading this world. He had driven out Daggon’s physical form, and Arya had handled the switching of the Conjunction’s connection.

Now he had returned safely from the Otherworld.

What else could there possibly be?

Facing his confusion, the Lady drifted backward and seated herself lightly. Water rose around her as though alive, flowing upward against gravity to cradle her body.

“Do you remember what I told you, Lannor? This rift was born from the currents of Chaos magic. Even I, or Gaunter O’Dimm, can do little more than influence it. None of us can fully control it.”

Lannor soothed the horse beside him before it embarrassed itself further, then slowly furrowed his brow.

“You mean ... the rift cannot be closed anytime soon?”

The Lady nodded gently.

“And because it cannot be closed, many beings are becoming uneasy.”

She placed particular emphasis on the word “beings.”

Having overheard her earlier conversation with Gaunter O’Dimm, Lannor understood immediately.

Those who were uneasy were not ordinary people.

Not kings.

Not nobles.

But the things that truly upheld the structure of the world itself.

Gods.

Demons.

An uncontrollable Conjunction of the Spheres Rift was a catastrophe waiting to happen. The scale of the response against Daggon alone proved that.
