Chapter 172: The Castle Gates Opened
Compared to Lannor’s swordsmanship, speed, and agility, Gregor Clegane was at a complete disadvantage in this fight despite the absurd thickness of his armor and the superior reach of his sword-and-shield combination.
Faced with the storm of incoming slashes, the giant knight could only lock sword and shield together in front of himself, relying on the sheer size of his equipment to barely survive the assault.
Steel rang against steel in a constant shrieking barrage.
Sparks burst into the dark.
Splinters exploded from the oak greatshield.
Even Gregor’s own men were beginning to stare in numb disbelief.
Gregor had always led through brute savagery.
His soldiers were used to enemies panicking the moment the Mountain appeared, then collapsing completely once he displayed his monstrous strength.
None of them had ever imagined a situation where Gregor Clegane would be pinned down and beaten back in a small-scale battle where his side held the numbers advantage.
Unexpected situations shattered morale faster than arrows.
And Lannor’s dominance over Gregor went far beyond that.
After every strike, sections of the elegant longsword in his hands began to glow with sacred golden light.
At first, the warriors thought it was merely the reflection of gold ornamentation along the blade during motion.
But the light kept growing brighter.
Longer.
Soon it spread across larger portions of the sword itself until nobody could continue lying to themselves.
All across the battlefield, warriors from both sides found their attention dragged toward the flashing blade in Lannor’s hands.
Tonight, they had not only witnessed magic.
They had witnessed a weapon infused with mana.
Lannor stood nearly half a meter shorter than Gregor.
Yet the battlefield looked absurdly inverted, like a child beating a larger boy senseless.
Every slash forced the black-iron giant backward.
His massive body rocked under the impacts. His boots scraped through the mud in involuntary retreat.
“Just wait ... just wait...”
Inside the bucket helm, Gregor’s brutal face had twisted into something nearly feral as muscles throughout his body approached their limits.
He was still being suppressed.
Still he refused to give up.
Because from his experience, attacks this violent and explosive always came from a single burst of effort, a fighter emptying himself in a frenzy.
There had to be an end to it.
There had to be a moment where the pace weakened.
And once that moment came, he could...
Slash!
Before the thought finished, sacred golden light flooded his vision.
Not the occasional flash leaking through gaps between shield and sword during defense.
This time there was nothing blocking it.
The golden radiance came straight toward his face.
Only then did Gregor suddenly feel the weight vanish from his hands.
“My shield and sword ... broke?!”
When every rune along Arondight’s blade ignited in golden brilliance during the swing, the slash’s destructive power surged explosively.
The oak greatshield.
The steel greatsword.
Both shattered in a single exchange.
And falling to the ground along with the ruined weapons came half of Gregor’s hand, still trapped inside the gauntlet.
Lannor watched him calmly.
Not only had he not exhausted himself the way Gregor expected, he even let out a faint laugh.
“I was waiting for the mana to charge.”
The witcher tilted his head slightly.
“What were you waiting for?”
Only now did Gregor fully realize half his hand had been severed.
“Aaaagh! AAAAAH!”
Pain and fury ripped from his throat together.
He lunged mindlessly toward Lannor.
