Chapter 165: The Wolf Among Kings
As a member of the Kingsguard, Jaime Lannister ought to have been clad in splendid white armor beneath a spotless cloak, a living symbol of knightly honor and purity.
But today, he had come in a fine leather riding outfit instead.
No white cloak. No Kingsguard armor.
As though he already understood the crime he was about to commit, surrounding the Hand of the King, perhaps even spilling the Hand’s blood.
And as though he had already planned how to flee afterward.
He had used House Lannister’s reach in King’s Landing to track Eddard’s movements. He knew the Hand would return through the Mud Gate.
But there was one thing Jaime had failed to calculate.
The company did not contain only the Hand of the King.
It also contained a king boiling with murderous rage.
“Move! Seize Jaime Lannister!”
Robert roared.
As he thundered past a Lannister soldier, the King swung his hammer upward in one savage motion.
Steel crashed against steel. The soldier’s helmet caved inward along with his jaw.
Jaime held only a hand-and-a-half sword. Worse still, he wore no armor at all.
So despite Robert’s swollen body and years lost to wine and indulgence, Jaime found himself forced to keep dodging on horseback instead of meeting him head-on.
“Your Grace! This is a matter between Stark and Lannister! It concerns no one else!”
Half protest. Half threat.
In a feudal realm, a king who meddled too deeply in noble disputes threatened the authority of every lord beneath him.
A stable king was supposed to stay above private quarrels.
But things had changed.
Robert’s weight kept him from catching Jaime cleanly, so he simply began smashing through Lannister soldiers like a man hammering stakes into mud.
Those soldiers carried spears, ideal weapons against an unbarded warhorse like Robert’s, yet none of them dared strike the King.
“No concern of mine? Those three bastards have stood as crown princes before the whole realm for years! And you say it has nothing to do with me?! How much longer were you and that whore Cersei planning to fool me?!”
Jaime froze in the saddle.
At this point, Robert, Eddard, and Lannor all knew the royal children were not Robert’s blood, but none of them yet knew who the true father was.
They merely assumed Jaime, as Cersei’s twin brother and constant companion in the Kingsguard, must know the secret.
But Jaime knew too much.
That was why Robert’s words hit him like a mace to the skull.
Because he was the father.
Those children were his.
The guilt he had buried for years twisted violently inside him, and under Robert’s furious accusations, panic spread through him faster than wildfire.
His first thought was immediate and absolute.
There would be no peaceful ending to this.
At the end of the Rebellion, Robert had looked upon the smashed corpses of Targaryen children without punishing the men responsible.
Children.
Jaime knew exactly how hard Robert’s heart could become.
Robert would never spare him or Cersei.
The Gold Cloaks riding with the King had little desire to fight House Lannister either, but once the King himself charged in, hesitation became suicide.
Steel hissed from scabbards.
The Gold Cloaks surged forward.
The street dissolved into chaos.
Shouting. Horses screaming. Armor slamming together.
Jaime rode in circles atop his mount, dazed. Only years of knightly instinct kept him moving, weaving constantly to avoid being dragged down by infantry.
He could not understand it.
He had only come to pressure Eddard Stark into releasing Tyrion.
How had Robert uncovered the secret he and Cersei had hidden for so many years?
