Chapter 153: Fire Reflected in Cat Eyes
When Lannor stepped out of the house Huff rented, dawn had not yet arrived.
The interrogation had been prepared in advance together with Mentos. Every question had been arranged to strip out the useful information cleanly and quickly.
Before leaving, Lannor cast another Axii Sign upon Huff, muddying the man’s memories until the whole encounter would feel like some indistinct nightmare.
By tomorrow, Huff himself would barely remember anything. He would go on living normally and continue preparing for the Tournament.
Right now, the enemy remained hidden while they stood exposed.
Lannor had no interest in Huff wandering around with the face of a man silently screaming, I leaked secrets and I’m about to die.
That sort of behavior only invited attention.
Using the darkness as cover, Lannor did not immediately return to the Red Keep.
Instead, he changed direction and headed toward Iron Street.
Since he was already out, he intended to learn Tobho Mott’s Valyrian Steel techniques as well.
In this age, most smiths lived inside their own shops.
When Lannor arrived at the forge he had visited earlier that day, he found the Master Smith without effort.
Then he placed an Axii Sign upon him.
Compared to Huff, the man’s willpower was even weaker. Half asleep and muddled from dreaming, he immediately began boasting about his craftsmanship without needing any emotional guidance at all.
Lannor and Mentos recorded everything in both written and audio form to ensure the complete preservation of the Valyrian Steel reforging spell and techniques.
“Sir, these methods cannot create Valyrian Steel from scratch. They only allow existing steel to be reforged.”
“I know,” Lannor replied calmly. “But with this as a foundation, I doubt it would be difficult for Rita to reconstruct the full forging Spell.”
“Then, sir, I estimate Miss Margarita will also require a highly skilled blacksmith.”
“Berengar. Isn’t he always talking about opening a forge? After living for centuries, the bastard should at least have learned something.”
Seeing that Lannor had already sorted the matter out completely, Mentos fell silent again.
When Tobho Mott bragged during the day, his descriptions had sounded mysterious and unfathomable.
But like most techniques, once the threshold was crossed, the core of it boiled down to only a few crucial details.
From the smith, Lannor obtained a difficult incantation, along with two critical temperature stages and their required durations.
That was enough.
The Valyrian Steel Reforging Technique was now his.
By the time Lannor returned to the Red Keep gates once more, the sky had reached that darkest hour before dawn.
When leaving earlier, he had already closed the smaller inset gate without locking it.
Unless someone deliberately tugged at it, nothing would appear unusual.
Which now made returning wonderfully convenient.
The Red Keep Sentries still carried themselves with the same half-hearted indifference as before, making Lannor’s Night Walk feel almost as easy as returning home.
After he reached the Hand’s Tower and removed the black leather clothing that left him feeling unpleasantly exposed, Eddard arrived carrying a candle.
“Seems you haven’t slept at all. You’ll need to stay sharp during the day, otherwise people may notice.”
Lannor welcomed him inside.
The two men sat facing one another in the room’s chairs.
“This concerns the truth behind my foster father’s death,” Eddard said heavily. “I couldn’t sleep even if I tried.”
There was an obvious roughness lodged in his throat, and the rims of his eyes had reddened.
He truly had cared deeply for the former Hand of the King.
